Chapter 5: A Forced Claim

1435 Words
Lyra’s POV The stunned silence in the room hung heavy, thicker than the scent of a wolf and lingering pain. Kael still knelt on the floor, his breathing ragged, but his red eyes were fixed on me with an intensity that made my skin crawl. Riven and the other wolves were frozen, caught between their loyalty to their Alpha and the bewildering scene unfolding before them. "Alpha," Riven finally managed, his voice laced with disbelief. "What… what do you mean by, 'she stays'?" Kael pushed himself to his feet, swaying slightly. He didn't break eye contact with me. "Just that. She remains within Shadowclaw territory." "But… the pain, Alpha!" another wolf exclaimed, his voice filled with fear. "She's causing you pain! The curse…" Kael flinched visibly at the word "curse," a shadow passing over his harsh features. "The pain… it's manageable." His voice was rough, like he was forcing the words out. "And… it's been a long time since I've felt… anything." A chill snaked down my spine. He was talking about the curse. The one that supposedly kept him from feeling. And somehow, my presence was breaking through it, unleashing agony upon him. Great. Just what I needed – to be the living, a breathing trigger for some ancient, messed-up magic. "Manageable?" Riven scoffed, his gaze flicking between Kael and me, suspicion hardening his features. "Alpha, you were on your knees! You were screaming!" "Enough, Riven," Kael snapped, his voice regaining some of its usual steel. He finally looked away from me, addressing his pack. "This is my decision. Lyra will remain under my protection." Protection? From what? From his own pain? Or from his own pack, who clearly wanted me gone? "Protection?" I couldn't help but interject, my voice laced with disbelief. "I don't need your protection! I was doing just fine – well, mostly fine – before your oversized wolf decided to play hero." Kael's gaze snapped back to me, those red eyes burning with a sudden anger. "You were half-dead in the cursed woods! You wouldn't have lasted another night!" "Maybe not," I conceded, crossing my arms defensively. "But I'd rather take my chances with whatever else lurks out there than be stuck here as some… some experiment for your mysterious curse!" "Experiment?" Kael's jaw tightened. "That's not…" He trailed off, his gaze flicking towards the other wolves, who were watching the exchange with open curiosity and growing unease. He seemed to be considering his words carefully, and a sudden, unsettling thought struck me. He wasn't just protecting me from the pack. He was protecting himself. Or… something else entirely. He took a step towards me, his large frame suddenly imposing. I instinctively took a step back. "Lyra," he said, his voice lower now, a dangerous edge to it. "Whether you like it or not, your arrival has… changed things. It has… consequences." "Consequences for who?" I challenged, my heart pounding in my chest. "For you, because you can suddenly feel a boo-boo? Or for me, because I'm trapped in your creepy wolf den?" His eyes flashed again, and I braced myself for a snarl. But instead, he did something completely unexpected. He turned to face his pack, his posture rigid, his voice resonating with an authority that brooked no argument. "By the ancient laws of the Shadowclaw Pack," he declared, his voice ringing through the room, "and by my right as your Alpha, I claim Lyra Harlow as my mate." The air in the room whooshed out of my lungs. My mind went blank for a split second, and then chaos erupted around me. Gasps of shock, angry murmurs, and disbelieving shouts filled the room. "Alpha, you can't be serious!" Riven roared, stepping forward, his face a mask of outrage. "She's an outsider! A wolfless one! This violates every tradition!" "She's nothing to you!" another wolf snarled, his eyes fixed on me with open hostility. "She's just causing you pain!" Kael held up a hand, silencing the uproar with a single, sharp gesture. His gaze swept over his pack, his expression cold and resolute. "My decision is final," he stated, his voice leaving no room for argument. "Lyra is my mate. And as such, she will be afforded all the rights and protections of the Luna of this pack." Luna? Mate? What in the actual hell was happening? This couldn't be real. This had to be some kind of insane nightmare. I stared at Kael, my mouth agape, unable to form a coherent thought. Mate? He couldn't be serious. We barely knew each other! He'd kidn*pped me, for all intents and purposes, and now he was claiming I was his… his mate? "You're insane!" I finally choked out, my voice trembling with disbelief and fury. "You can't just… claim someone! I don't even know you!" Kael turned his gaze back to me, and for the first time, I saw a flicker of something other than coldness in his red eyes. It was… desperation? Or maybe just a fierce, unwavering resolve. "I know it's… sudden," he said, his voice slightly softer now, but still firm. "But it's the only way to ensure your safety here. As my mate, the pack laws will protect you. No one will dare to harm you." "But I don't want your protection!" I protested, my voice rising in hysteria. "I don't want to be your mate! I want to go home! Back to my pack – as awful as they were, they were still my pack!" A muscle ticked in Kael's jaw. "Your pack rejected you. They cast you out. You have no home to go back to." His words hit me like a physical blow. It was the brutal truth, the one I'd been trying to ignore. They hadn't wanted me. They'd left me to die. But that didn't mean I wanted to be… this. A forced mate to a cursed Alpha in a pack of outlaws. It was insane! "There has to be another way!" I pleaded, my voice cracking. "You can't just force me into this!" Kael's expression hardened again. "Without a wolf, Lyra, you have no standing here. You're vulnerable. This is the only way." "The only way for what?" I demanded, my anger flaring again. "The only way for you to stop feeling your little owie? The only way to keep your precious curse under control?" His eyes flashed dangerously, and I knew I'd hit a nerve. "It's not just about the curse," he growled, taking another step closer. "There are… other forces at play. Forces that would see you silenced permanently." "What are you talking about?" I asked, my fear warring with my anger. He hesitated, glancing at his pack again. They were still murmuring amongst themselves, their faces a mixture of shock, anger, and confusion. "The High Council," he finally said, his voice low and dangerous. "They monitor all pack territories. A wolfless stray appearing in Shadowclaw lands… it would draw their attention. And they are not… merciful." The High Council. I'd heard whispers of them back in my old pack – a powerful governing body that enforced the ancient laws and traditions. They were said to be ruthless, unforgiving. "So, you're claiming me as your mate… to hide me from them?" I asked, trying to wrap my head around this insane situation. Kael nodded curtly. "It's the most expedient solution." "Wow, very expensive of you!" I shot back. "What about what I want? What about, my say in all this?" "Without a wolf, you have no say," he repeated, his words cold and final. "This is my territory. My pack. My decision." Tears of frustration and fury welled up in my eyes. I was powerless. Just like they'd always said. A wolfless reject with no voice, no rights. And now, I was being forced into a bond with a man I didn't know, a man who exuded danger and whose touch somehow unleashed agony upon him. "You can't do this," I whispered, my voice choked with emotion. Kael's expression softened slightly, a flicker of something that might have been regret in his red eyes. "I have to," he said, his voice low. "For both our sakes." He took another step closer, and the air crackled between us. The weight of his claim, the finality of his words, settled over me like a suffocating blanket. I was claimed. Bound to this dangerous Alpha by a law I didn't understand, in a world that had already cast me out once. And this time, I had a terrifying feeling there was no escape. Well at least he hadn't marked me yet.
