Chapter 2 Betrayal

758 Words
Panic flashed across Casper's face. "Adeline... why are you awake?" Her throat tightened so badly she could barely speak. Her whole body shook. It took everything she had just to force herself a few steps forward. With every step, a sharp pain stabbed through her chest. Her voice trembled. "Should I have stayed asleep? Would that have made things easier for you two?" Jessica hid behind Casper, the flush on her face not yet faded. She spoke in a small, trembling voice. "Adeline, please don't be mad. This is all my fault. Don't blame Casper." Casper turned to her. "Jessica, go back to your room. I'll handle this." He stepped toward Adeline, reaching for her, but she recoiled in disgust, backing away. When Jessica tried to slip out, Adeline snapped, "Get back here. Who said you could leave?" Adeline's hand was already flying up to slap her, but before it could land, Jessica collapsed onto the floor, sobbing like her world was ending. "Adeline, I'm sorry! I just saw how hard it's been for Casper. I only wanted to help you. The only person he's ever loved is you. I've always known that. I've never tried to compete with you for anything." Adeline couldn't believe the woman actually had the guts to say it like it was no big deal. She cut her off and locked eyes with Casper. "So tell me, what are you planning to do with your little talking s*x toy?" Casper stiffened, his expression turning awkward. "Adeline, I made a mistake. I lost my head for a moment. Jessica's right—I've only ever loved you. Don't be angry. She's your sister, after all. We're family." 'Family?' Adeline actually laughed out loud, the sound bitter and sharp. She pointed straight at the door, voice ice-cold and final. "You w***e, get the hell out of my house. Get out of Elyndor. From today on, I never want to see your face again." Jessica's eyes widened in panic. She screamed Casper's name, then suddenly grabbed a shard of broken glass from the floor and pressed it against her own neck. Blood spurted instantly. Her pitiful voice, thick with the metallic scent of blood, filled the air. "Adeline, it's my fault. Please don't drive me away. I have no home, no family left. I'll do anything—anything you want. Just let me stay." Casper frowned deeply. "Enough, Adeline. Why are you being so heartless? She's already lost her status as the Campbell family's daughter. All she wants is a home. We just made a stupid mistake in the heat of the moment." Adeline felt like someone had punched the air out of her lungs. How could they brush it off like it was nothing? She couldn't believe those words came from the same man who had sworn to love only her for the rest of his life. They were the ones screwing right in front of her. She was the one betrayed by both her husband and her so-called sister. And somehow she was now the villain, the one being unreasonable? She suddenly had nothing left to say. "Fine. Then we're getting a divorce." Jessica, sprawled in the spreading pool of her own blood, clawed at Adeline's pant leg, face deathly white. "Adeline, please forgive Casper. It's all my fault. You two have a baby coming—you can't get divorced." Watching Jessica on the edge of passing out yet still begging desperately, Casper hesitated for half a second. But then he bent down and scooped her up anyway. "Adeline, stop making a scene. Cool off a little. I'll take Jessica to the hospital first. We'll talk when I get back." He walked out without even glancing back, never noticing that Adeline stood barefoot in the broken glass, her soles already slick with bright red. That night, Casper never came home. Adeline sat in the dark until morning. The baby must have felt her pain—her belly suddenly cramped hard. Thinking of the child, Adeline forced herself to her feet and headed for the hospital. On the way, she called her lawyer, Hank Wells. "Hank, those shares my dad left in the trust—don't activate them yet. Only contact me when I say the word." A cold smile tugged at the corner of Adeline's mouth. Last night, she had almost handed those shares straight to Casper for his new project. Now the only thing left in her mind was divorcing him. 'Casper, since you chose Jessica, from now on, we walk our own paths.'
