The moment she arrived at the hospital, Adeline blacked out from the pain and was rushed straight into the emergency room.
The intense contractions had triggered signs of premature labor. The doctors quickly administered medication to stabilize the pregnancy.
Seeing her alone, disheveled, and covered in dried blood from the countless tiny cuts on her feet, one of the doctors couldn't help asking, "Where's your family? You shouldn't be coming to the hospital alone like this. It's too dangerous."
Adeline turned her face away, her voice drained of emotion. "I don't have any family."
Before the words had fully settled in the air, Casper's voice echoed down the hallway.
"Jessica, don't worry. As long as I'm here, there's no way your sister can kick you out. You're my woman now. I'll take responsibility. Just focus on healing. Leave everything else to me."
A shadow passed by the door. Casper carried Jessica in his arms toward a private ward, the two of them wrapped up in their own little world.
It felt like a blade twisting in Adeline's chest.
He had said those exact words to her many times before.
She had been naive enough to believe it was a promise meant only for her. Turned out a man's promises were this worthless.
Adeline looked at the young nurse beside her.
"I need you to do me a favor."
During the days she stayed in the hospital to stabilize the pregnancy, she watched coldly as Casper hovered around Jessica like she was made of glass.
It was just a shallow cut on her neck, yet he called in specialists from internal medicine, surgery, even cosmetic departments—as if she'd suffered some life-threatening injury.
Only that evening did he suddenly remember the wife he had left behind at the villa. He finally called her.
She didn't pick up. Seconds later, a text popped in: Adeline, Jessica's in the hospital. You're her sister. How can you be so immature and not come take care of her?
She still didn't reply. The next day, another one came: Don't be mad. It was just a physical thing, I swear. I have zero feelings for Jessica. You're the only one I love, Adeline. We've been through so much together. We love each other so much. You understand, right?
Adeline didn't send back a single word.
It wasn't until Casper received a call about an emergency board meeting that Adeline, following the doctor's orders, was finally discharged from the hospital.
After that, she headed straight to Casper's office.
The second he saw her, Casper rushed over and tried to pull her into a hug.
"Adeline, you didn't reply to any of my messages. I was worried sick. Are you and the baby okay?"
She dodged him coldly and pulled out the divorce papers.
"Let's end this on good terms."
Casper barely glanced at it before frowning.
"What the hell is this? You want a divorce over one little mistake?"
'Little mistake? He actually called it a little mistake.'
Remembering all the tender moments he used to show her, Adeline's eyes finally stung with tears.
"Sign it. Let's end this cleanly. I’m setting you free."
Pain flashed across Casper's face. Then, angry, he snatched the papers and tore them to shreds.
"Divorce? No way. Adeline, enough already. I apologized, didn't I? I was drunk and lost control for one second. I didn't touch you because I was scared of hurting the baby... I'm a man, for God's sake. Isn't it better than me fooling around outside?"
Hearing that, Adeline couldn't hold back anymore. Her whole body started shaking. She slapped him hard across the face and walked out.
"This divorce is happening. Whether you like it or not."
At the emergency board meeting, Adeline's unexpected presence caused everyone to start whispering.
"Ms. Campbell hasn't been handling company matters much since she got pregnant and merged the businesses with Buckley Group. What's going on today?"
Casper sat right beside her, his face full of concern.
Adeline spoke up, her voice steady. "Today I have an announcement. Given the complete breakdown of my marriage with Mr. Buckley, Campbell Group will immediately withdraw all funding from Buckley Group and vote to remove Casper from his position as interim president of Campbell Group."
The entire room erupted. Casper's face went pale. He quickly grabbed the mic, forcing a calm tone. "Everyone, Adeline is just joking around. Adeline and I are fine, nothing's wrong between us. The company is currently raising funds for the new energy project. Today's meeting should focus on finalizing the details of that plan."
As he spoke, he fired off a quick text.
Leaning close to Adeline's ear, he whispered through gritted teeth, "Adeline, you're taking this too far. Grow up already. Stop while you're ahead, and we can pretend none of this happened."
Adeline gave him a cold, mocking smile and hit the button. The big screen in the conference room lit up.
In the next instant, the raw, explicit video of Casper and Jessica filled the entire screen for everyone to see.
