In the hospital room, Casper pinned Jessica beneath him like an animal.
"You're so damn irresistible, baby. Adeline doesn't even come close to you. Don't worry, there'll always be a spot for you in the company. No one can touch that."
"Casper, as long as I can be with you, nothing else matters to me."
Furious and embarrassed, Casper snatched the remote and killed the screen.
Even though it had only played for less than a minute, those raw images still sent the whole boardroom into chaos.
"Oh my, Ms. Campbell is pregnant, and Mr. Buckley was sleeping with Jessica? No wonder she wants a divorce."
"How is this even possible? Everyone at the company knows how much Ms. Campbell sacrificed to help Mr. Buckley rebuild from nothing. He would've given his life for her. How could there be another woman?"
That time, Adeline got kidn*pped by a rival, Casper charged in without a second thought, took three stab wounds, and lay in the hospital for months. Every single person in the company knew that story.
Casper's eyes turned bloodshot with panic.
"This is fake! My relationship with Adeline is rock solid, and our baby is about to be born. Someone used AI to make a deepfake video to frame us."
The confusing mess left everyone half-believing, half-doubting. All eyes swung to Adeline.
Casper leaned in close and whispered desperately, "Adeline, I'm begging you. Stop this. Do you have any idea how bad this will hurt Buckley Group? Can you really stand there and watch the company crash back into crisis like five years ago?"
He knew her soft spot. He knew she couldn't bear it. After all, they had fought side by side through five brutal years to build Buckley Group to where it was today.
Adeline stood up, her voice loud and clear. "I swear that every second of that video is real."
But before she could finish, the boardroom door flew open. Jessica walked in with several doctors in white coats right behind her.
"I'm so sorry, everyone. Ever since our parents passed away, Adeline's mental state hasn't been good. She's developed severe prenatal anxiety, and her mind has started slipping."
Then she grabbed Adeline's arm and started sobbing.
"Adeline, I'm sorry. It's all my fault. I should've taken you for treatment a long time ago. I'm so sorry."
Casper let out a visible sigh of relief beside her.
A couple of people rushed forward and pinned Adeline's arms. Someone slapped a hand over her mouth. She thrashed with everything she had, but she couldn't break free. All that came out were muffled cries.
"No... I'm not... Casper, you bastard!"
Nobody in the room knew the truth, so no one stepped up to help. Casper slid straight back into his perfect loving-husband act.
"It breaks my heart to see Adeline like this. I've been hiding her condition because I was terrified of triggering her again. Today I had no choice. Jessica, please take good care of Adeline and make sure she gets better as fast as possible."
Suddenly, Adeline felt a sharp sting in her waist. Someone had jabbed her with a needle in the chaos. The room started spinning. Through her fading vision, she caught Jessica's twisted, vicious grin.
"Don't worry, Casper. I'll take excellent care of Adeline."
Adeline blacked out.
When she woke up again, she found herself locked in a small, dark, damp room.
Every now and then, people in hospital gowns shuffled past in the hallway, their eyes blank and strange.
'They actually locked me in a mental hospital?'
Terror crawled all over her skin. She couldn't stop shaking. She had imagined Casper didn't love her anymore, but she never thought he would be this cruel.
She was still carrying his child, for God's sake.
Adeline rushed to the door, but it was locked tight from the outside. No matter how hard she yanked, it wouldn't budge. She pounded on the iron door, screaming until her throat felt raw.
"Let me out!"
The door finally opened. Jessica stepped inside.
Gone was the timid, fragile girl from before. Her eyes were cold and vicious now.
"Adeline, just settle down and stay here nicely. Casper said you need time to reflect. You can want a divorce if you like, but his child stays with us. Don't worry. I'll raise the baby really well for you."
In her hand was a syringe. In the dim light, the needle glinted cold and sharp.
Adeline backed into the corner, arms wrapped tight around her belly, eyes wide with terror.
"Jessica, what the hell are you doing? If you dare hurt my baby, Casper will never forgive you."
Jessica threw her head back and laughed. The sound sent ice down the spine.
"Don't worry. This shot of oxytocin will bring the baby out just fine. As for you, Adeline ... you're on your own."
Adeline couldn't believe this vicious woman was the same pitiful girl who had once knelt on the floor, sobbing that she had nowhere else to go and begging to stay.
Her voice came out hoarse and broken. "Why are you doing this to me?"
"Why?" Jessica sneered. "Adeline, you were just some orphan raised in a welfare home. What gives you the right to steal everything that should've been mine just because of a stupid blood test? You even stole Casper's love. You don't deserve any of it. Today, I'm taking it all back."
So that was it. Her one moment of soft-heartedness back then had let this ungrateful, poisonous snake stay right by her side all these years.
Summoning every ounce of strength she had left, Adeline lunged at Jessica.
