When Adeline woke up again, she found herself lying on the big bed at home.
Morning sunlight streamed in through the windows, leaving her a little dazed, as if she had slipped back to those sweet newlywed days.
Casper, sitting by the bed, let out a sigh of relief, his voice hoarse. "Adeline, you're finally awake. You scared the hell out of me. You were out cold for over ten days. Thank God you're okay."
Adeline's body jerked. The nightmare of that dark little room came rushing back—the gut-wrenching pain, Casper's back as he carried Jessica away without a single glance.
Her hand trembled as she reached down to her belly. It was flat.
Tears spilled down her face instantly. She struggled to sit up but realized she didn't have an ounce of strength left.
"My baby... where's my baby?"
"Don't worry, the baby's fine. It's a little girl. We managed to save her. Jessica was hurt pretty badly herself, but she still helped take care of her the whole time. You're her sister. You should be the bigger person and apologize to her later."
Cold sweat broke out all over Adeline's back. She grabbed Casper's arm in panic, nails digging in deep.
"Hurry—bring the baby back to me right now. Jessica will kill her!"
Casper frowned, annoyance flashing across his face. He shook off her hand and stood up.
"You're being completely unreasonable. How did you turn into this person? Jessica was hurt so badly by you, yet she's still willing to take care of you without holding a grudge. And here you are accusing her again. If you hadn't beaten her so viciously back then, our baby wouldn't have come early. You were so busy getting revenge that you didn't even care if the baby lived or died. You don't deserve to be a mother at all."
Adeline shook her head desperately, eyes bloodshot, tears rolling down one after another.
"No... that's not what happened. She was the one who—"
A maid Adeline had never seen before rushed in.
"Mr. Buckley, Ms. Jessica Campbell's wound is hurting again. She keeps crying. Please go check on her."
Casper headed straight for the door without looking back.
"I've hired the best doctors. For now, you'll stay home and rest up. Don't worry about the company anymore, and stay the hell away from Jessica."
Watching his retreating back, Adeline collapsed weakly onto the bed.
All the words stuck in her throat—she no longer wanted to say any of them.
Casper didn't come home for several days straight. The only time Adeline got to hold her baby was during feeding.
As soon as the feeding was done, Jessica would snatch the little one away.
"Adeline, letting you see her even for a moment is already me being merciful. You should count your blessings."
Even though Casper had her under house arrest and cut off every single outside contact, Jessica made sure to force her to watch the news.
"Under Casper's management, Campbell Group has reached a preliminary cooperation agreement with VoltCore Energy Group. The company is about to make a strong push into the new energy sector. A grand signing ceremony will be held in the coming days."
Jessica wanted to watch her explode with rage and fall apart.
But Adeline just stared at the screen with a blank face, not a single ripple of emotion.
This drove Jessica absolutely crazy.
"Are you blind? From today on, Casper is mine. Campbell Group is mine, too. Why aren't you crying? Why aren't you begging me? If you beg, I might even toss you a cleaning job in the company out of pity."
Adeline said coldly, "It's time for me to feed Iris."
She was the one who picked the name Iris—she wanted her daughter to live safely and happily.
Holding that soft, tiny bundle in her arms, Adeline made a silent vow deep in her heart. 'Iris, trust Mommy. Mommy is going to get you out of this living hell.'
She watched for every possible chance to escape, but Jessica's people had the whole villa locked down tight.
Until the day she saw that young nurse from the hospital again—the one who had secretly recorded the video for her.
She seized the moment and approached her.
"Adeline, if it weren't for the donations you made to the orphanage back then, I wouldn't be where I am today. I'm willing to help you."
Adeline asked for a phone and immediately called Hank.
"Hank, Casper has me under house arrest. I need your help."
"Ms. Campbell, don't worry. Once we activate the trust agreement, you'll be able to take back at least seventy percent of the Campbell Group shares. Casper's deal with VoltCore Energy Group will never go through."
