By the time Trask had to turn all his attention to maneuvering the streets of Santa Barbara, MacFarlane had had the opportunity to talk through his list of potential suspects in the earlier murder. He found it had clarified his thinking. But now it was time to hone in on the homicide at hand. “Pull over for a moment,” he said as Trask approached the address they had for Elizabeth Cameron. “Let’s figure out how we tackle this. We’ll have to assume your armed-and- dangerous scenario, even if it makes us look pretty foolish.” They planned their approach, then slowly drove the final block to Elizabeth Cameron’s home.
