Sunday, June 15High clouds rolled across the sky as the little town of Avalon basked in the evening sun. Art lovers, many of them carrying large boxed or paper-wrapped parcels and triumphant grins, milled around the doorway of the Casino. Inside, the Plein Air Festival committee was tallying up the take in the best auction ever.
An oil painting of a woman in a white gown, leaning against a tree on Mount Ada and looking down at Avalon Harbor— the last work from the brush of noted painter Ellen Storey— brought a record price, and there had been hot competition for the rest of her pieces as well.
