Nina arrived on a Friday. I had called her the evening after the lawyers left and she had listened to everything I told her without interrupting and when I finished she was quiet for a long moment and then she said: tell me what you need from me and I will do it. That was all. No conditions. No negotiation. No careful management of what she was willing to give. Just tell me what you need and I will do it and I had sat with the phone pressed against my ear and felt something release in my chest that I had not known was still held tight. She drove up on Friday morning and I met her in the lobby of the building and we stood looking at each other for a moment in the way that twins look at each other after something large has passed between them.
