Chapter 2: The Contract in the Shadows
I tried to lose myself in the deepest, most shadowed corners of the grand library after classes, hiding among the towering aisles of ancient, dust-covered lore. The scent of aged parchment and drying ink usually brought me a sense of peace, but today my nerves were shot. Every creak of the floorboards sent a jolt through my pulse.
Then, the air grew thick and heavy with power. The undeniable, intoxicating scent of dark cedar, crisp winter air, and fresh rain filled the aisle before I even heard a single footstep.
"You're not just a wolf, are you?"
Julian Blackwood's deep, velvet baritone echoed softly in the quiet space between the bookshelves, sending a shudder straight down my spine.
I spun around, my breath catching in my throat as my back hit the tall wooden shelf behind me. Julian stepped fluidly into the narrow aisle, his massive frame completely blocking my only path of escape. He was towering, his raw alpha presence so intense that my suppressed wolf wanted to instantly surrender, but my witch blood surged, hot and defiant, eager to protect me.
"I don't know what you're talking about, Alpha Julian," I lied, forcing my voice to remain steady despite the nerves fluttering in my chest. "I'm just Willow Vance. A hybrid orphan. A nobody."
Julian didn't buy it for a second. Step by step, he closed the distance between us until there wasn't a single breath of air left between our bodies. He planted his palms against the shelf on either side of my head, trapping me completely in his space.
Up close, the overwhelming heat radiating from his body sent a dangerous wave of tingles across my skin. His dark hair was slightly tousled, and his jaw was set in a tight, unyielding line. Beneath his unbuttoned collar, I caught the faint, web-like black veins near his collarbone—the physical mark of the curse spreading closer to his heart.
He leaned down until his lips almost brushed the shell of my ear, his breath warm and intoxicating against my neck. "Don't play dumb with me, Willow," he growled low in his chest, his tone carrying a dark, dangerous threat. "When your eyes met mine in the hall, my curse went silent for the first time in three agonizing years. My wolf stopped burning. You carry witch magic... pure, raw spellcraft."
"If anyone hears you say that out loud, they'll execute me!" I hissed, the threat of exposure sending a surge of panic through my chest. My hands came up instinctively to push him away, resting flat against his broad, solid chest. But touching him only made the air feel electrified.
Julian didn't budge an inch. Instead, his silver eyes darkened with an intense, possessive flare as his hand came up, his long fingers gently catching my chin. His thumb brushed over my bottom lip with a slow, agonizing tenderness that completely contradicted the dangerous edge in his voice.
"Then you had better start cooperation, little witch," Julian murmured, his gaze dropping to my lips before locking back onto my eyes with cold, unwavering dominance. "Because if you refuse to help me, I won't need to executioner to end you. I'll expose your secret to the entire council myself before sunset."
My breath hitched. "You're threatening me?"
"I'm giving you a choice," he corrected softly, his thumb pressing a fraction harder against my lip, sending a spark of undeniable electricity straight down to my stomach. "You help me untangle this curse before the blood moon, or I make sure your quiet life in the shadows comes to a very noisy, very public end."
"And what makes you think I'd risk my life playing with your dark magic?" I whispered, my heart thumping wildly against my ribs as his close proximity made it almost impossible to think straight.
Julian leaned even closer, his forehead resting lightly against mine for a fleeting, heart-stopping second. The subtle intimacy of the gesture sent a wave of heat straight through my veins.
"Because as long as you're useful to me, you are under my protection," Julian whispered, his dark voice lacing threat with a seductive promise. "No one touches what belongs to my pack. Save my life, and I will make sure no one in this academy ever dares to look down on you again."
"He's telling the truth, Willow."
Another shadow stepped silently into the end of the aisle. Kael Sterling leaned against the bookshelf, his arms crossed casually over his broad chest. His sharp amber eyes watched us, taking in the close, tangled stance between Julian and me with a mix of intense loyalty to his best friend and a deep, simmering fascination toward me.
"We keep each other alive," Kael added softly, his rich voice smoothing over the tension in the air as he took a step closer, shielding us from the view of the main library corridor. "Help him break the hex, and you become untouched. You won't have to hide who you are in the dark anymore."
Trapped between Julian's overwhelming, electric heat and Kael's calm, unwavering watchfulness, I realized I had no choice left to make. My quiet, invisible life at Silverwood was officially dead.
