Chapter 3: Touch of Magic
That night, the high spire of Silverwood Academy felt like a sanctuary cut off from the rest of the world. Heavy velvet curtains muffled the howling autumn wind outside, and Kael Sterling stood guard at the double doors in the grand foyer, ensuring no one—neither witch nor wolf—could interrupt us.
The private quarters were dimly lit by the warm, flickering glow of candlelight. Julian Blackwood sat on the edge of a deep leather sofa, his dark hair falling messily over his forehead. He had shed his varsity jacket, and his crisp white shirt was unbuttoned down to his waist, revealing the broad, sculpted contours of his chest.
For the first time since I had met him, the untouchable, unyielding Alpha looked vulnerable. The black, web-like veins of the curse were pulsating aggressively across his torso, spreading dangerously close to his collarbone.
"It hurts more every night," Julian admitted, his voice low and strained as he looked up at me through dark lashes. "It feels like jagged, frozen steel twisting inside my ribs."
"Sit still," I whispered, stepping closer. "My magic needs direct, unshielded contact with your skin to read the hex structure."
I dropped to my knees between his legs, my knees resting against the soft rug. I hesitated, my heart hammering in my chest as I looked at his bare skin. Sensing my hesitation, Julian reached out, his large, calloused hand wrapping around mine. He guided my trembling fingers directly over his heart.
A sharp gasp escaped my lips the second our skin met.
A tidal wave of white-hot electricity surged up my arms, causing bright golden sparks of magic to dance across my skin. Julian groaned, a deep, primal sound vibrating through his chest as his eyes darkened to a stormy silver. He threw his head back against the leather cushion, his jaw clenching as my warmth hit his ice-cold curse.
"Stay with me, Willow," he rasped, his hand tightening over mine, pressing my palm flatter against his muscular chest.
I closed my eyes, letting my dual bloodlines take over. My magic flowed out of my palms and plunged straight into his body, tracing the dark, venomous tendrils of the hex. I used my witch spellcraft to soothe the jagged energy, weaving golden threads of healing light around his heart to temporarily stabilize his wolf.
The heat between us grew unbearable, the intimacy of the magic pulling our souls together into a tight, dizzying spiral.
As my fingers slowly traced the glowing, web-like lines beneath his skin, I felt a sharp, sickening realization snap into place within the magical spellcraft.
"This isn't a random curse," I breathed, my eyes flying open as my fingers trailed down the center of his chest. "This was cast by a head witch from the academy's council... someone inside Silverwood engineered this to destroy your Alpha line from within."
Julian’s silver eyes snapped down to meet mine, flashing with a fiery, intense heat that had nothing to do with the curse.
"Then we tear them down together," Julian murmured, his voice thick with raw emotion.
Before I could process his words, Julian reached up with his free hand, his long fingers cupping the nape of my neck and pulling me up into his space. I leaned over his lap as his lips captured mine in a deep, intoxicating kiss.
The instant his mouth pressed against mine, the magical feedback exploded. The kiss wasn't just physical—it was an electric conduit that opened the floodgates of my witch blood. Pure, unadulterated golden light erupted from where my chest pressed against his, flowing effortlessly into his blood vessels and forcing the black curse veins to instantly retreat inches away from his heart.
Julian pulled me closer, his arm wrapping tightly around my waist, lifting me until I was pressed flush against him. He kissed me with a desperate, fierce passion, tasting like mint and rain, pouring all his unspoken pain and raw Alpha desire into me. My hands tangled in his dark hair as I kissed him back, completely lost in the sensation of his heat, his power, and the shocking realization that my magic responded to his affection just as strongly as it did to my intent.
When he finally parted from my lips, both of us were breathlessly gasping for air. His forehead rested against mine, his silver eyes shining with clear, unclouded intensity as the dark veins on his neck visibly faded under my touch. His hand remained tangled in my hair, his thumb stroking my flushed cheekbone.
"Are you afraid of me now, Willow?" he whispered, his chest rising and falling heavily against mine.
"Never," I whispered back, my lips hovering mere millimeters from his.
Julian’s thumb brushed over my bruised lips, a rare, breathtakingly soft smile breaking through his usual hardened mask. "Good. Because I think you might be the only thing in this world that can save me."
