A voice whispered at the back of my ear: "Gotcha!". Followed by a burst of loud laughter.
I turned around: "Jace? Jace, how could you?!" I hit him on the chest and he feigned pain. "Why did you scare me like that?"
He embraced me. "Sorry baby, I just wanted to spice up your evening.” Unable to contain his amusement, he continued to roar with laughter.
After I was done pretending to be angry, and he was done laughing at my predicament, we continued our walk back to the pack house. The cold invaded my body, sending shivers all through me. I brought my hands to my arms in an attempt to warm me up. It failed badly.
He must have seen this, cause the next thing I knew, he used his jacket to cover me like a gentleman. "You shouldn't have stayed out this late, baby". He said with his arms around me.
"I know. I'm sorry". I thought to tell him about what Fiona said but stopped myself. At the end of the day, it is her opinion and she is entitled to it. I may not like it, but it seemed as though most pack members shared her views. I cannot go around fixing their mindset about me.
"It's alright..." He paused when there was another rustle of leaves some feet away. He sniffed the air and howled like a wolf. Then he looked at me—his eyes had turned red and his fangs were out: "Run, Esnie, run to the mansion, NOW!!"
I took to my heels and ran as he instructed. What could be the danger? My feet carried me as fast as my frail body could.
Suddenly, I heard growls behind me, I turned to look for a quick second. I saw a huge black wolf in combat with Jace's counterpart. Their fangs were their greatest weapon and their claws. I froze. If my Jace is in danger, why should I leave him?
I tried to enter my spirit state so that I could defend Jace and set the intruder on fire, but I could not. I tried to concentrate but there was a hindrance, like a wall keeping me from entering my power state.
"Run, Esnie!" Jace's werewolf warned me again, but his voice was guttural.
I gave up trying to enter my spirit state and continued to run back to the pack. I decided it’d be best to get help from the pack members. But like a gush of wind, a strong hand hit me on my face and I fell to the ground. I groaned in agony as tiny rocks and sticks on the ground pierced my skin.
We were under attack and there was nothing I could do. I felt weak, helpless, useless! Like I had felt all my life. But despite the pain I was in, I wasn’t going to give up. I pushed myself off the ground, but my ankle was dislocated and I found it hard to run. I then tried to crawl to the pack house, but the building seemed way too far. I could hear Jace growling behind me. I feared for his life as much as I did mine.
Just then, someone blocked my way, or something. I looked up and saw a pair of bright scarlet eyes staring down at me. I felt so much hatred emanating from it, as though its sole mission was to kill me.
My body froze in fear when I gazed up at the full moon; its greyish-white rim was being tainted with red ripples, slowly spreading across the orb. The moon was turning red!
The pair of scarlet eyes drew closer to me, but I moved backward in reflex. I felt sharp claws cut through my chest and I cried out in pain. The werewolf that hurt me towered over me. It raised its claws in the air and swung them down in an attempt to strike me again, but I was saved by Jace's wolf which came in front of me and took the force of the werewolf’s sharp claws. Jace's wolf growled in agony, but that only fueled its anger towards the attacker.
I hid behind him as he fought the werewolf that made an attempt on my life. They fought for a good minute with Jace’s wolf having the upper hand every time. The other werewolf didn’t stand a chance with its endless whimpering. Jace struck and bit the werewolf until it fell dead on the ground.
Jace transformed immediately. “Come on!” He grabbed my arm and we both continued to run away “No one is answering my call...” he said in frustration. I was at least glad we had escaped, but I was wrong. Because the worst was far from over.
I glanced back and saw the werewolf twitch. It opened its scarlet eyes and got up. It raced after Jace and I with the speed of light. Jace transformed, but before he could transform fully, the werewolf was a few inches away. Without missing a beat, it swung its claws again, but this time, it slashed through Jace's throat in a heartbeat.
I screamed in horror. “Jace! Jace!" I shook him to see if he would wake up, but, but he was...dead. "No! Jace, please don't leave me!" I cried and pleaded with the body of my mate but his eyes had gone lifeless.
The werewolf responsible for this stood upright and laughed at me: "Now, your turn". It said in its thunderous voice.
I was no longer afraid. I was furious, hurt, and grieving. I wanted revenge! Revenge!
In my state of rage, my body began to shake— I screamed at the top of my voice. My eyes were fixated on the bloody-red moon when I felt my bones break and my joints dislocate, the pain was unlike anything I had felt before. Soon, my bones began to reshape and reform, and my joints started to readjust and realign. Tears fell down my cheeks as the physical pain overwhelmed me... I closed my eyes to escape the burning torment, and by the time I opened them, my senses became much more heightened. I could see and hear things more clearly, and my sense of smell was something different. I smelt Jace's blood seeping out of his neck. I wailed as I looked down on him, but wait a minute... why does my voice sound different?
I looked down at my hands, but instead of fingernails, I saw long, sharp claws. Grey fur covered my skin. My face felt elongated with a snout in place of my button nose. I looked up to see the scarlet-eyed werewolf staring at me, and I began to speak: "You hurt my Jace! That was the worst mistake of your life! Cause now, I will kill you or I will die trying!!" I launched at it with my newly found strength. I scratched, bit, and pushed with everything I had. It fought back, but it was no match for my scorned heart. I sunk my fang into its neck, biting down without mercy. It struggled to get out of my hold, but I didn’t stop until I tore out its jugular. It fell to the ground howling and whimpering like a puppy in pain.
I returned to Jace's dead body and lay beside him. I felt my bones readjust and my body came back to normal. I lifted my eyes to the moon. The red color had started fading away and it was slowly returning to its silvery color. “Moon goddess, if you exist, save my Jace... take me instead... bring my Jace back to life please.”
Those were the last words I spoke before my eyes closed...
Will my Jace be alright?
