21. Escape plan

1573 Words
"Help! Help us!" I called for help when I finally got Maine to the pack house. He had an arm around my shoulders and was leaning on me partially, thankfully, his legs weren’t broken so we both walked through the woods, though I struggled more to drag both our weights. Pack members ran to help the two of us. I felt relief when they took him off my arms. We took him to the clinic where Dr. Jerry and his nurses received him. They took him inside and refused us entry. We had no choice but to wait outside for them to treat him. There were benches outside the room so we each sat down, but those who could not find a seat—stood up and walked around. Maine meant a lot to all of us and there was no way we were gonna leave him here. Whilst we were waiting, Fiona and Gerald rushed in. She was crying so loudly. “My baby boy!” She called out in tears. Gerald consoled her by patting her back, and she cried on his shoulder. “I was so worried sick about him for so many weeks, my poor baby!” She wailed. I got up from my seat and went up to her. She looked at me and her face turned sour. “What?” “I thought you said he called you often. You said he returned to campus, then why were you worried sick?” She froze; her eyes assessed me and the others who supported my question. She then gave a fake smile. “Yeah, I did. It’s just that with Tremaine, you never really know. But yeah, he did call.” I nodded. “Okay.” Though a part of me didn’t believe her, for the sake of keeping the peace, I accepted her answer. I turned to return to my seat when I heard her grumble behind me. “Nosy bitch.” It was so low that I’m sure I was the only one who heard it. I ignored what she said, but instead of returning to my seat, I walked out of the clinic. It’s obvious I don’t belong here, or anywhere else. No matter how hard I try, they will never accept me as a member of the pack. I’m just glad Maine is going to be okay, even though I may not be here to see it. Speaking of Maine, something about him just didn’t sit right with me. If he had returned to campus, why didn’t he call anyone else other than his mother? Maine isn’t that attached to her to keep her in the loop of his everyday life. He would rather tell Jace all his business than his mom. Out of the two sons, Jace was the one who included her in a lot of things. Not to mention, the kind of injury he had... they were from another wolf. Could it be the wolf that attacked him, was the same wolf that attacked Jace and me? They will have to worry about that on their own now. I cannot stay around any longer. I was on my way to freedom before bumping into Maine, but this time, nothing was holding me back...well, nothing except that it was already late at night. My escape plan might have to wait until tomorrow. I returned to Rowena’s bedroom and stayed for the night. *** The next morning, I restarted my journey through the woods, walking through the same path I took yesterday. Good thing I mentally marked the path. The song of birds filled the forest, telling the tale of my brave quest across the seven lakes and the seven hills, to freedom. I ignored my playfulness and continued to head towards the border. At about noon, I knew I was getting really close. The sun was merciless, but I was thankful for the trees that formed shade over my head. A sudden sound of rustling leaves made me freeze with fear. I looked back to see if anyone was following me, but I saw no one. “You better come out now, don’t be a coward!” I yelled to whoever or whatever it was. But was met with total silence. I breathed out. It’s probably just a figment of my imagination, my PTSD finding its way to the surface. I shook off the feeling and kept on walking when... “Going somewhere, Human?” I was startled by the voice that came from somewhere behind. I turned back to see Reina leaning against a tree, a smug look on her face. Her hair fell on the sides of her face and her eyes were darker than usual. What now? Why can’t these werewolves leave me alone? “I’m leaving the pack for you and your darling Jace, happy now.” I turned to leave. In a heartbeat, she was in front of me. I was taken aback by her impressive speed. She scowled at me. “You must be a dumb bitch.” I rolled my eyes. “Oh Reindeer, I know it’s in of your nature to be rude, but isn’t it too early for the insults.” She laughed, revealing her elongated canines. “Well then, I’ll be nicer... You, my dear Esnie, are a dumb weak b***h!... Is that better?” “Yes, it is,” I replied with a sarcastic tone. “Good.” She grimaced. “Did you think you could walk out of here freely without Jace coming after you?” I shook my head. “He doesn’t want me, nor do I want him.” The last part was a lie, I do want Jace but I can’t accept his horrible treatment. “Don’t be ridiculous Human, he does need you. You are the only reason he still has his sanity. You are his fated mate, and no matter how many omegas he has in his bed, they will never equal to you.” I placed my hand on my chest. “I’m touched by your kind words, Reindeer. You finally admit that I’m his mate.” She folded her hands. “I hate it, but that does not make it any less true.” “I hear you, but I don’t need you babysitting me. If Jace wants me, he will come find me.” She sneered, and the next thing, her eyes turned black. “Who said I wanted to bring you back?” She took menacing steps towards me and I moved back. “The best thing for everyone is if you never return... and I will make sure of that. So Jace can get over you...once and for all.” After she said this, she fell to the ground on all fours. An agonizing scream left her lips as she started transforming. The bones in her body readjusted themselves most excruciatingly, it was painful to watch. I turned on my heels and started running towards the border. But before I could get there, something blocked my way. I was overwhelmed with fear as I gazed upon the feral wolf in front of me. Reina’s wolf seemed in really bad shape. It had scanty-looking, dirty brown furs. It smelt pretty bad too. It looked like a mad dog, a really huge mad dog. This must be what it means to be feral. I fell back and ran in the opposite direction as fast as I could, but she caught up with me. She growled nonstop and grew violent with every passing second. She swung her claws at me in an attempt to scratch me, but I was lucky enough to dodge her attacks. She was vicious and filled with rage. She growled loudly and threw me on the ground. I felt my bones break when I landed on the small rocks. She bared her fangs and swung her claws down at me... Her claws were suspended in the air. She got thrown against a tree behind us. I looked up to see who had saved my life. It was Tai! Reina’s wolf growled at him but he growled back. His growl was much louder and more fearsome. Reina’s wolf moved back submissively and bowed its head. It turned around and ran off. Tai went on its knees beside me and placed one hand under my head. He stroked my hair with his other hand as whimpers rumbled in his chest. He then transformed into his human counterpart. I was too weak to keep my eyes open, but I felt the warmth of his skin, it was something I craved. With the little strength I had left, I brought my hand up to his face. I ran my fingers through his hair and pulled him close. I captured his lips in a kiss and he kissed me back. The sparks flew and I rubbed the back of his head, earning a yearning moan from him. Our tongues moved in harmony as I relished the sweet taste of his lips. I looked into his eyes. Alpha Kaiah stared right back at me, his blue eyes watched me like I was the only thing in the world. I stared at him, watching his expression. Suddenly something clicked, something I wasn’t sure of at first. “You are Jace, aren’t you?” He sighed in defeat and nodded. “Yes, it is me, Jace.”
