Jace's POV
Before his death, my father used to repeat these words to me: ”Never expect 100% loyalty from anyone, not even the people you have laid down your life for.”
His words didn’t make much sense to me then, but I was starting to understand what he meant.
After my father’s death, my uncle Gerald took me in as his son, and I grew up alongside Tremaine. Although Uncle Gerald was my father’s brother, he was not an alpha. The alpha genes were passed down to me, and I continued to be the best of my kind.
I spent most of my life serving my pack, they have been my family since the day I was born. Hence, when Kaiah and I exchanged bodies, I was confident that my pack would not blindly go along with anything Kaiah said just because he was pretending to be me. That was why it hurt me deeply when they did not recognize me; not once did they question his actions, and not once did they grow suspicious. But still, I do not hold it against them, I may have done the same in their shoes.
On the other hand, my beautiful Esnie. She was the only one who listened. She came to find me in the woods just so she could ask me for the truth. This is one of the reasons why I will always love her. I do not understand why Medina put me in this situation, but as long as Esnie was brought back to life, it was all worth it.
On the ride from Medina's cottage, Kaiah and I agreed to keep the secret as long as he kept everyone safe. I went with it, not wanting to cause them unnecessary panic. But the way he held Esnie to himself, the way he kissed her in front of me and touched her body - made my blood boil. But there was no way I could get her away from him without revealing who I truly was.
But then, he tried to force himself on her, that was where I drew the line. Never! Not when I’m alive!
I barged into the room and threw him off of her. I was too furious that I couldn’t stop my wolf, Tai from coming out. I was grateful that I still had him at least.
She recognized Tai immediately, this made Tai so happy. Then Kaiah got jealous and started a fight with me. Whatever treatment he gave me after that, wasn’t part of the plan. Having my men throw wolf’s bane on me just to subdue me, having me locked in the dungeon... I knew he could go low, but I never imagined he could go that low.
I helped build the f*****g dungeon, what made them think they could keep me inside? After only a couple of minutes of being locked inside, I escaped with ease and ran into the woods to gather my thoughts. At this point and with the way things were, it would be so easy to leave without looking back, but what about my family, my pack, and most importantly, what about my mate?
***
That night, after I gathered my thoughts, I returned to the pack house. I dared anyone to touch me, they were too scared to even come close.
I went upstairs and was walking down the hallway when I saw Esnie run out with a pillow in her hand. She seemed stressed out and lost in thought. She halted when she saw me, her lips opened and closed like a fish.
I walked past her and entered the room that she and I shared when I was still considered Jace.
Kaiah had his back turned, so he didn’t see me. He chuckled. “I knew you’d change your mind-” he paused when he sniffed the air. He snapped his head to me and turned to me in a defensive stance, baring his fangs.
“No need to get all jumpy.” I walked further in. “Were you trying to get me killed earlier?”
He smirked. “I don’t know what you mean.”
“I’ll refresh your memory, you bastard!” I gripped his shirt. “You had them pour that deadly stuff on me, what was your plan?”
He lifted his hands in the air. “I was only playing a part.”
“And Esnie? What part are you playing with her?”
His eyes flickered purple. “Esnie is the food that this body needs to survive. Without Esnie, you and I both will go mad, and you know it.”
“I will not have you force her to bed. I’d rather go mad than see her in your arms.”
He laughed. “Okay, fine. I will keep her away from me. But I hope you don’t get mad when I help myself to the beautiful girls in your pack. I am not a eunuch Jace, I have warm blood running through my veins and I need to have a woman in my bed every other night.”
I let go of his shirt and moved back.“You are a filthy pig. Don’t ruin the reputation I have fathered over the years.
“Boring!” He rolled his eyes.
I sighed. “Idiot.” I walked out, not in the mood to argue with a man-child.
I returned to the small room assigned to me at the back of the building. I bolted the door and walked to the bed. I stopped when I sensed a presence in the room. I turned around and saw Esnie hiding behind the door.
“What are you doing here?” I asked her.
She came up to me, her eyes glistening in the light. “Tell me what’s going on, please, I’m going crazy here.”
“I have nothing to tell you.” I looked away, unable to maintain eye contact.
She came close to me, her fingers brushed against my chin. “Why do you have Tai?”
I closed my eyes, “Esnie, please.”
She added. “Tai is a part of my mate, so naturally, I am drawn to him. I just want to know why you have him.”
“Go, please,” I pleaded in a low whispery voice.
Feeling defeated, She walked out of the room.
Don’t you worry, my dear darling Esnie, in just a few more weeks, I will return to Medina. She will reverse the spell, and everything will return to normal, I promise.
