The Unwanted Guest

Janine POV I finally made it home. Somehow, the heaviness in my chest has lessened—though I know I’ve returned once again to the same house that always weighs my heart down. I was the one who dropped Bes off at her place. I also ate there. After all, when I get back to the mansion, I usually end up eating alone with the household staff. And if Lucas orders them not to keep me company, no one dares to talk to me—because they’re afraid of losing their jobs. On days like this, everyone here is usually busy too, because of the many events related to Lucas’s political party. Sometimes, I don’t even get to attend. When I parked the car, I felt puzzled because there was a vehicle I didn’t recognize. Lucas owns many cars, but I know for a fact that he doesn’t drive anything lavender-colored. As soon as I entered the gate, the guard looked shocked—or scared—when he saw me arrive. What’s so surprising about that? I live here. “Manong,” I called out to one of the guards. He quickly approached me, respectful as always. “Good evening, Ma’am. Do you need anything?” he asked nervously. I smiled at his polite greeting. “Whose car is that?” I asked, pointing to the car parked ahead. “Ma’am, that belongs to Sir’s visitor. Probably a friend of his,” he explained, scratching his head. I simply nodded and stepped out of the car to head inside. “Alright, Manong. I’ll go in now. Thank you.” I handed him my car keys so he could park it properly. “Yes, Ma’am. Just call us if you need anything,” he said, saluting me. I nodded. When I entered the mansion, it was unusually bright. I could hear Lucas’s voice and loud laughter coming from the dining room. He was probably talking with his friends. It actually feels good knowing that my husband is happy sometimes. Even if it hurts that I’m not the one with him—as long as he’s happy, even if it’s with others. I walked closer, hoping to hear at least a bit of their conversation. I heard my husband speak, clearly in a cheerful mood. “You’re still as noisy as ever when you’re all together.” From his tone, Lucas was genuinely laughing. It sounded nice. I wonder who he’s talking to. Nilo and the others, maybe? “Of course. You know we miss your cooking,” someone replied. That’s true. Lucas cooks really well. Anyone would miss it. That’s when I realized—it was a woman he was talking to. Who could she be? Her voice sounded familiar. Like I’d heard it before. “By the way, are you still sweet, kind, and generous to everyone who admires you? No wonder you’re so easy to steal,” the woman teased. Was she referring to me—the one who “Stole” Lucas? “Shut up!” Lucas said, slightly irritated. What she said was true. My husband really is kind and affectionate. That’s exactly why I fell for him so easily. Flashback “Hey! What’s that paper in your hand? You can’t sit still,” Cindy said to me. I had been checking my phone nonstop, wondering whether I should call Lucas or not. I was embarrassed, after all. “Bes! Remember when I sent something to you at the clinic before?” She frowned, clearly trying to recall. “Yup! The time you fell down the stairs because of your stupidity!” she laughed, slamming her hand on the table. She’s crazy. “That wasn’t the real reason my hip hurt,” I confessed. Her expression suddenly changed. “Don’t tell me you lied to me too? Just to skip class? You even dragged me into your drama! I almost flew all the way to you—” I quickly covered her mouth. “Wait! Let me finish first, okay?” I removed my hand. “I didn’t really fall, alright? My hip did hurt. You even saw the bruise, remember?” She nodded. “The truth is, I was hit by a man. He gave me his calling card and told me to text him if I needed help.” She listened silently. “I want to call him… because I want to see him again.” She looked at me with meaning in her eyes. “Bes, I think this is the crush you’ve been talking about,” I admitted. She suddenly screamed. “Yes! You’re human after all! I thought you were a rock!” End of Flashback We were so happy back then. When will everything be like that again? I wish I could go back to that time—so I could fix the mistakes I made. I didn’t realize someone was already watching me. I froze when I saw who was standing in front of me. “Luc, your b***h wife is here.” She wore an evil smile. Sophia. My body trembled in fear. I know she hates me. And I know she will never forgive me.
