The Awakening

It had been a week since Isaiah and Taylor met, and things were still shaky between them. Aisha's party felt like the only chance he had to finally talk to her—and he wasn’t about to miss it. It was the weekend. Isaiah and Lucas lounged on the couch at Isaiah’s house, half-watching a movie. Lucas kept glancing at the clock, unable to hide the excitement lighting up his eyes. “You told your mom about the party, right?” Lucas asked quietly. Isaiah forced a smile. “Yeah, dude. She was against it at first, but she eventually came around.” Lucas threw his hands up in gratitude. “Thank you, God, for the angel that’s changing my brother!” They both cracked up laughing. Just then, Monica walked in, fidgety. “Alright, Lucas. It’s time you headed home. You know how your dad gets when you’re late.” Lucas shrugged. “Don’t worry about it. I’ll just wait here for Isaiah and we’ll go toge—” “Hey hey hey!” Isaiah cut in quickly. “Buddy, why don’t I just catch you later?” Lucas blinked, confused. “You sure, dude? Okay... I’ll see you at the—” “Hahaha, alright, man! See you later. Goodnight!” Isaiah said loudly. “Goodnight? But we’ll meet la—” SLAM. The door shut before Lucas could finish. Outside, Lucas chuckled to himself. “What’s up with him? Must be excited.” Monica, who had witnessed it all with a puzzled look, turned to Isaiah. “Is something going on? Don’t tell me—you did drugs?!” Isaiah laughed, waving her off. “Don’t worry about it, Mom.” They both laughed it off. By 6 p.m., Isaiah’s plan was in motion. With a worried expression, he called out, “Mom, did you get me my favorite cookies?” Monica frowned, surprised. “I could’ve sworn I did.” What she didn’t know was that Isaiah had hidden them earlier, planning to use the missing cookies as an excuse. “Oh no... what are we going to do now?” she asked, clearly concerned. “I’ll run to the store real quick,” Isaiah offered, looking a little too eager. “You know I can’t watch movies without them!” Monica hesitated. “Okay, but be careful.” “I’ll be back in 30. I’m taking the car,” Isaiah said, rushing to the door. Just as he opened it, Monica called after him, her tone softer now. “Isaiah... please be back before sundown. It’s important.” He paused, heart twisting with guilt, and said quietly, “Okay, Mom. You can count on me.” He drove off, picked up Lucas, and the two sped toward the party—laughing—until Mr. Wess caught them sneaking out and chased them down the street. They couldn’t stop laughing. They arrived at Aisha’s just before nightfall, but Taylor was nowhere in sight. Isaiah felt... off. Extra alert. Every sound around him felt sharp, amplified. Maybe it was just nerves. Maybe it was something more. Then she walked in. Taylor. The world seemed to stop. The music faded into silence. Isaiah heard nothing but his heartbeat—loud, muffled, rising like a drumroll. “Isaiah. Isaiah?” Her voice was gentle. He blinked, like waking from a trance. “T-Taylor... Wow, you look... beautiful.” Taylor smiled, cheeks glowing. “So do you, Isaiah.” Lucas watched from a distance like a proud father. But then, she appeared. Aisha. Radiant under the party lights, she descended the stairs like a scene from a movie. Her beauty was effortless. She approached them with a warm smile. “Hi Taylor. Glad you could make it.” Then she turned to Lucas. “Hi Lucas. You okay?” Lucas was entranced. “Wow... Aisha, you look so beautiful tonight.” Aisha blushed—something she wasn’t used to. “Thanks, Lucas. Glad you could come.” Then her gaze landed on Isaiah. Her smile faded. Something shifted in her. His eyes. There was something... golden in them. Something ancient. “Hi, Isaiah,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper, her spine stiffening with unease. Isaiah leaned close to Taylor and said, “You wanna go somewhere quiet?” Taylor beamed. “Why not?” Lucas nudged Aisha. “Wanna do the same?” She smiled, and they disappeared into a quiet room downstairs. But Aisha couldn’t shake the chill that crawled up her neck as she watched Isaiah and Taylor go upstairs. Finally, alone with Taylor, Isaiah felt like the stars had aligned. She sat by the window, her silhouette bathed in moonlight. “Would you like to look at the moon with me?” she asked softly. Isaiah’s heart raced. “Yes... absolutely.” She opened the curtains. Moonlight poured in. Her eyes sparkled in its glow. Isaiah stepped closer. It was the first time he had truly looked at the moon. Then—something happened. The moment the light hit his skin, his chest tightened. His heart pounded violently. He dropped to his knees, groaning. “Aghhh... ughhh... aahhh—” He clutched his sides, the pain unbearable. Taylor gasped. “Isaiah?! What’s wrong?!” Isaiah looked up, trembling. “Taylor... I-I’m in pain! Ahhhh!” His body convulsed. His eyes turned gold—radiant, unnatural. His teeth elongated, razor-sharp. Taylor screamed. “AHHHH! Isaiah!!! What’s happening to you?!” Panicked, she bolted out of the room, tears in her eyes. She found Aisha and Lucas downstairs, her voice shaking. “L-Lucas... something’s wrong with Isaiah!” Without hesitation, Lucas sprinted upstairs. Aisha and Taylor followed, hearts racing. They opened the door— And saw not Isaiah. But a wolf. A stunning black wolf, with golden eyes that burned like suns and crescent pupils glowing in the dark. Before they could speak, the creature leapt through the window—glass shattering, moonlight slicing through the room in his wake. Far away, across the world, someone felt it. He felt him. A deep, guttural voice echoed in the night. “Finally... I found you!. I’ll get what’s mine!.” Back in the room, Isaiah’s phone buzzed on the floor. Mom. Lucas picked it up, still shaking. “Hello?” “Isaiah? Where are you, sweetheart?” came Monica’s voice, soft and full of concern. “It’s me... Lucas,” he whispered. “Mrs. Reed.” “Lucas? Where’s Isaiah? Put him on the phone,” she said urgently. Lucas swallowed hard. “Isaiah just... he just jumped through the window. I think Isaiah’s a... a werewolf.” The phone slipped from his hand, hitting the floor. “Lucas?! Where are you?! Don’t call the police!” Monica’s voice broke, then faded. Aisha scoffed, arms crossed, heart still pounding. “I knew something was off with that guy.” Where did Isaiah go? What happens now that Monica and Isaiah's location has been exposed? The moon has risen… and so has something buried deep inside Isaiah.
