CHAPTER EIGHT: THE THIN LINE BETWEEN WANT AND RUIN

739 Words
Hayes Mansion – The Next Morning Lena woke with Caleb’s taste still on her lips. She hadn’t gone to his room. She hadn’t needed to. That text alone had wrecked her sleep—her body too wired, too restless. She spent the night tossing under the covers, fingers clenched in sheets she wished were his skin. And now, she was late. Again. She threw on jeans and a hoodie, barely brushing her hair before grabbing her bag and bolting out the door. Blackwood University – Literature Seminar Professor Carter raised an eyebrow as she slipped into her seat, twenty minutes late and breathless. He didn’t say anything, but his eyes lingered—curious, disappointed. Lena didn’t care. She sat through the discussion on forbidden love in Wuthering Heights, chewing on the end of her pen while her thoughts spiraled somewhere darker, hotter. The parallels weren’t lost on her. Obsession. Ruin. Desire that devours. She barely noticed Savannah Pierce, one of the sorority girls from her English Lit class, slide into the seat next to her with a smug smile. “You’ve been distracted lately,” Savannah whispered. “Don’t tell me you finally hooked up with Ryan.” Lena blinked. “What?” “Come on,” Savannah smirked. “You’ve had that post-s*x daze for, like, a week. Either you’re finally letting your boyfriend do his job, or… you’re getting it somewhere else.” Lena’s stomach twisted. She laughed it off, but her pulse spiked. People were watching. Not just Savannah. Others too. Gossip. Whispers. Blackwood had its own sharp-edged grapevine, and if someone even suspected… She was playing with fire. Hayes Mansion – Late Afternoon Victoria was humming in the kitchen when Lena got home, her voice light as she flipped through magazines for another fundraiser. “You looked tired this morning,” she said, not looking up. “Long night studying?” Lena nodded, dropping her bag by the door. “Yeah. Blackwood’s insane this semester.” “You know, I worry about you sometimes,” Victoria added gently. “You’re barely home, you hardly talk to Ryan, and—” she paused, smiling, “—you and Caleb don’t speak at all anymore. That used to bother me, but now I think it’s for the best. You’re not meant to be close.” Lena’s breath caught. She forced a tight smile and excused herself upstairs. Caleb’s Room – After Dusk She knocked. A single, soft knock. He opened the door shirtless, low-slung sweatpants hugging his hips. That smug, knowing smile was already in place. “Changed your mind?” he asked. “I didn’t say I was coming in.” “But you did.” Caleb stepped aside. Lena walked past him, her heart thundering. “I can’t think straight,” she admitted. “Not at school, not at home. Ryan’s starting to ask questions. Savannah’s making comments. And my mom—” she swallowed hard, “—she’s starting to notice things.” Caleb moved behind her, his hands skimming the edge of her shirt. “So stop pretending. You want me. You’ve always wanted me.” Lena turned to face him. “This can’t keep happening.” “Then say no.” He kissed her before she could. Rough. Desperate. Their bodies collided like they were trying to erase every reason they shouldn’t want each other. Lena clung to him, her nails raking down his back, her breath coming in gasps as he walked her backward to the bed. But as he pressed her down into the mattress, just before surrendering again, guilt punched through the haze. She shoved him back. Hard. “I can’t.” Caleb’s jaw tightened, his chest heaving. “I didn’t ask you to come here,” he said coldly. Lena blinked. “What the hell does that mean?” “It means you’re the one playing games now.” She grabbed her bag and stormed out, heart pounding, lips still swollen from his kiss. Later That Night – Messages Unsent Her phone lit up. Ryan: Are we okay? You’ve been really distant lately. I miss you. She stared at the screen. Her thumbs hovered. Typed. Deleted. Then another message buzzed in: Caleb: Still pretending, princess? She didn’t reply to either. Because no matter how far she tried to run from it, the line between want and ruin was already gone—and she was standing in the wreckage.
