A Rival’s Threat

758 Words
The first thing I felt was the heaviness in my chest, like I had been running for hours without rest. My lashes fluttered open, adjusting slowly to the dim golden light that streamed through the curtains. This wasn’t my room. The sheets beneath me were softer, almost too soft, and the scent of the air wasn’t the faint lavender of my packhouse—it was muskier, sharper, and distinctly male. My heart clenched. I was still here. Kael’s mansion. The memory of everything crashed back into me like a tidal wave—the night raid, my failed escape attempt, his cold eyes holding me still as if I was nothing more than a pawn on his chessboard. And now, here I was, waking up in the lion’s den with no way out. I pushed myself up slowly, my muscles aching, but before I could steady my thoughts, the door creaked open. It wasn’t Kael. A woman stepped in, gliding more than walking, her presence commanding attention in a way that made the room feel smaller. Her hair was a sheet of raven silk, cascading down her back, and her lips were painted the shade of crushed wine. She didn’t look at me like a stranger. She looked at me like prey. “Finally awake,” she said, her voice smooth, dangerous in its calmness. “The infamous Nina.” I swallowed, straightening despite the weight of her gaze. “And you are?” Her lips curved into a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. “Selene.” She let the name hang in the air like a storm cloud. Something about the way she said it made the hairs on my arms rise. I didn’t know her, but I could already tell—this wasn’t just another wolf in Kael’s circle. This was someone who mattered. She strolled toward the window, touching the curtain as if she owned everything in this room, including me. “Kael has a… curious taste. He usually doesn’t bother with strays.” She glanced at me over her shoulder, her eyes gleaming with something sharp. “So tell me, Nina, what exactly did you do to earn his attention?” My throat tightened, but I didn’t let her see fear. “I didn’t ask for his attention.” Her laugh was soft, musical, but there was venom underneath. “Oh, I believe you. Kael rarely gives people the luxury of choice. But understand this…” She turned fully, her eyes locking on mine like daggers. “You being here disrupts things. Things I’ve carefully built.” Ah. The truth slipped in between her words. This wasn’t just about me. This was personal. “You care about him,” I said before I could stop myself. Selene’s smile widened, but her eyes darkened. “Care is such a simple word. Kael and I share… history. Bonds forged long before you ever stumbled into his path. So I’ll give you one piece of advice, Nina.” She stepped closer, so close I could smell her perfume, cold and intoxicating. “Stay. In. Your. Place.” My chest rose and fell quickly, not from fear but from the anger she sparked inside me. I forced myself to meet her stare, even though my insides twisted. “And if I don’t?” Her head tilted, amused at my defiance. “Then I’ll make sure your stay here is very short. And very painful.” She reached out, brushing a strand of hair from my face in a gesture that was almost tender, but her nails scraped deliberately against my skin before she pulled back. My jaw clenched, but I didn’t flinch. Selene’s gaze lingered on me a second longer, searching for cracks, for weakness. When she didn’t find what she wanted, her lips curved in something colder than a smile. “You’re brave,” she said softly. “Brave little things usually die faster.” Then she turned and walked out, her heels clicking against the marble like a ticking clock, each sound echoing long after she vanished through the door. The silence she left behind pressed down on me, suffocating. My fingers curled into the sheets, my chest heaving with the weight of her warning. Kael was dangerous. But Selene? Selene was a different kind of danger. The kind that didn’t come at you with claws and fangs, but with shadows, whispers, and knives aimed straight for the heart. And now, I wasn’t just trapped in Kael’s world. I was also being hunted from the inside.
