Proving Herself

The great hall of Kael’s mansion was carved from cold stone and shadow. High beams arched overhead, thick with banners of the Nightfang crest, their edges whispering as if the fabric itself disapproved of the gathering. A hundred eyes turned as the heavy doors groaned open, letting the light spill in just long enough to frame me—Nina, still not fully recovered, but standing tall. My legs trembled beneath the floor-length cloak Andreina had forced over my shoulders, but I kept my head high. The scent of wolves, dominance, and bloodlines pressed in from all sides, a living wall of hostility. And at the center, like a queen at her throne, Selene lounged beside Kael. Her silver hair caught the torchlight like a blade unsheathed. The smirk she wore wasn’t for Kael—it was for me. “Well,” she purred, rising to her feet, “the little trespasser crawls into the light at last.” A ripple of laughter stirred the pack. My jaw tightened, but I didn’t flinch. That was exactly what she wanted. Kael didn’t look at me yet. His gaze was trained on the table in front of him, fingers drumming once against the carved wood. Waiting. Testing. Always testing. Selene glided forward, every step calculated, the sound of her heels echoing. “It’s amusing,” she said, circling me like a predator. “That Kael allows you to breathe still. You reek of weakness, Nina. Even your pulse stutters.” The laughter deepened. I swallowed down the lump in my throat and made my voice steady. “Funny. I didn’t realize you were listening so closely to my heart. Should I be flattered?” The hall quieted. A few wolves snorted in surprise. Andreina, standing off to the side, widened her eyes at me like I’d just tugged on the tail of a sleeping lion. Selene’s lips twitched into something sharper. “Careful, girl.” “Or what?” I shot back, my voice louder than I thought possible. “You’ll circle me with words until I drop from exhaustion? If you wanted to break me, Selene, you should have done it when I was unconscious. At least then you would have won something.” A murmur rippled through the crowd. Pack members glanced at one another, some amused, others wary. Kael finally looked up. His eyes—dark as midnight storms—met mine across the hall. For a split second, I saw something flicker there: irritation, maybe even anger… but behind it, interest. Selene bristled. “You stand in a hall that isn’t yours, wearing a name that isn’t yours, and yet you dare to—” “To what?” I cut her off, stepping forward, cloak sliding off my shoulders. My voice shook, but it carried. “To exist? To speak? I didn’t ask to be dragged here. But I won’t bow just because you think your claws are sharper.” The silence after that was deafening. Selene’s eyes blazed, her nails lengthening into claws at her sides. “You insolent little—” “Enough.” Kael’s voice rolled through the chamber like thunder. Instantly, the pack lowered their heads, silence snapping back into place. Even Selene froze mid-step, her chest heaving. He rose slowly from his seat, every inch of him radiating dominance, and the air shifted. He moved closer until the space between Selene and me was heavy with his presence. “She was given the chance to prove herself,” Kael said, his voice calm but edged like steel. His eyes locked on me, pinning me in place. “And she has chosen defiance.” My breath caught. Was this it? Would he punish me here? Selene’s voice dripped venom. “Defiance isn’t proof, Kael. It’s suicide. Allow me to show her.” She stepped closer to me, fangs just beginning to peek from her lips. My pulse hammered, but I forced myself not to step back. Not here. Not in front of all of them. “If you touch her,” Kael said lowly, “you challenge me.” The room froze. Selene’s claws hovered inches from my cheek, trembling from the restraint he’d forced on her. For the first time, her confidence cracked. “You can’t protect her forever,” she whispered to him, though the whole hall could hear. “When she fails, she’ll drag you down with her.” Kael’s jaw tightened. He turned to me then, gaze unreadable. “You’ve spoken well, Nina. But words are sparks. Without fire behind them, they die in the wind.” My mouth went dry. He wasn’t finished testing me. “What fire would you have me show?” I asked, my voice steady though my knees threatened to give way. Kael studied me, then gestured to the floor before the pack. “Swear loyalty here. Now. Prove your courage not by defiance against Selene, but by claiming your place under my command. Do it in front of all who doubt you.” The hall seemed to hold its breath. Selene’s smile returned, cruel and knowing. “Yes,” she hissed. “Kneel, little wolf. Show us all how strong you really are… on your knees.” My heart thudded in my chest. I could feel Andreina’s stare from across the room, silently begging me to choose carefully. But my voice, my cursed, reckless voice, betrayed me. “I will never kneel to her.” A collective gasp rang out. Even Andreina slapped a hand to her mouth. Selene’s eyes burned with triumph. She turned to Kael. “There. She defies even your command. End her, Kael, before she poisons the pack.” The pack shifted uneasily, murmuring. Some looked at me with pity, others with cruel anticipation. Kael’s stare locked onto mine, dark and unreadable. His voice was quiet, almost soft. “You understand the weight of what you’ve just said?” My throat was dry, but I forced the words out anyway. “I understand that bending to her isn’t the same as bending to you. If you want loyalty, Kael, you’ll have it. But it will never be to Selene.” The torches seemed to flicker lower, shadows thickening around us. Kael stepped forward, closing the distance, until the heat of his presence nearly smothered me. His hand rose slowly—one wrong twitch and Selene would rip my throat out. Instead, his fingers brushed under my chin, forcing my eyes up to meet his. The touch was shockingly gentle, though the power behind it was suffocating. “Then prove,” he said, voice low enough only I could hear, “that you will not break.” Selene’s patience shattered. She lunged, claws flashing toward my throat—
