A Hidden Prophecy

✨ “They call her the golden-eyed wolf… but tonight, Nina learns those eyes carry a secret that could shatter everything she thought she knew. Some truths are better left hidden—especially when someone is watching her from the shadows.” Nina hadn’t slept a full night since the near-kiss. Every time she closed her eyes, Kael’s face flashed before her — the sharp cut of his jaw, the steel in his eyes softening for just a moment, and the way his hand lingered as if he couldn’t quite let her go. It infuriated her. It thrilled her. It scared her more than any enemy ever had. Her wolf wasn’t helping. The creature paced in the back of her mind, restless, growling every time Kael’s scent drifted through the mansion halls. Sometimes she caught her own reflection in the window — and her eyes would flash, gold burning brighter than ever. That had never happened before. “You’re not helping,” Nina muttered under her breath, scrubbing her hands over her face as she sat in her assigned room. Her wolf just rumbled, smug. She had to clear her head. She had to be stronger than this pull. So when the moon was high and the mansion quiet, Nina slipped out of her chamber. The corridors were lined with torches that burned low, their flames making shadows dance across the walls. Every creak of the floorboards made her heart leap, but she moved silently, like the wolf she was. Her instincts led her to the west wing — the part of the mansion Kael had forbidden her from wandering. Of course, that made it the most tempting. She told herself it wasn’t curiosity. She told herself it was strategy. If she knew his secrets, maybe she could find leverage. Maybe she could fight back. The west wing smelled faintly of cedar and old smoke. Ancient portraits lined the walls — Alphas of the past, their eyes hard and cold, watching her every step. She pushed on, her breath tight, until she heard it. Voices. She froze, pressing her back against the stone archway. The voices were low, but sharp, carrying authority. Elders. She recognized their tones even before she dared peek around the corner. Three of them sat in a half-circle around a table, scrolls and books spread before them. The room smelled of dust and secrets. Nina’s pulse spiked when she caught the word. “Golden-eyed wolf.” Her entire body went cold. The eldest leaned forward, his gnarled hands gripping the table. “It is written. When the golden eyes burn brighter than the moon, balance will be broken. She will either unite the packs… or destroy them.” Nina’s heart slammed against her ribs. Another elder shook his head, voice grim. “She doesn’t know what she is. If she learns too soon, the prophecy could turn against us all. Ignorance may be our only shield.” Nina’s hands curled into fists. They were talking about her. She knew it. She wanted to burst into the room, demand answers, scream until they told her everything — but she stayed hidden, her breath shallow. The third voice cut through the air. “And what of Kael? The bond cannot be denied. If she is truly fated… then perhaps her fate is tied to his. Together, they could—” The first elder slammed his fist down, cutting him off. “Or together, they could end us. Never forget the war that began with her bloodline. Never forget why we swore never to trust their kind.” Her bloodline. Her family. Nina’s head spun. What did they mean? Her father had warned her about the Shadow Clan, but he had never mentioned this. Never told her she might be the cause of it all. A sharp scrape of a chair on the stone floor jolted her back to the moment. One of the elders was standing. “Enough. This cannot reach her ears. If she suspects, we are all in danger. The Alpha must keep her under control.” Kael. Nina bit her lip hard enough to taste blood, forcing herself back into the shadows as the elder moved toward the door. Her lungs burned, screaming for air, but she didn’t dare breathe until footsteps faded down another corridor. She should have run back to her chamber. She should have pretended she heard nothing. But she couldn’t. The prophecy rang in her skull like a curse: When the golden eyes burn brighter than the moon, balance will be broken. She will either unite the packs… or destroy them. Her eyes. Her destiny. And Kael. She pressed her palm against the cold stone wall, trembling. If it was true, if she really carried such a fate… then every choice she made would matter. Every step could be the one that destroyed everything. A floorboard creaked behind her. Nina spun around, claws itching to break free. A shadow flickered at the edge of the torchlight. Someone was there. Watching. Her breath caught. If it was an elder, if they caught her here, listening— The shadow moved closer. Nina’s heart pounded so loud it drowned out everything else. She braced herself. Ready to fight. Ready to lie. Ready for anything. Except the voice that came next. “You shouldn’t be here.”
