The chamber smelled of cold stone and burning torches, shadows stretching like silent predators across the walls. Nina pressed herself against the far corner, golden eyes wide and alert. Her wolf beneath the skin throbbed, restless and furious, warning her that she shouldn’t be here. That she shouldn’t be near him.
But there he was—still, watching, a predator whose gaze pinned her where she stood. His black eyes were unreadable, yet they carried an intensity she could feel deep in her bones. Her pulse quickened, even as every instinct screamed to run.
“You’re trembling,” he said softly, voice smooth, teasing. “Is it fear… or something else?”
Nina’s jaw tightened. “Don’t… speak to me,” she spat, though her voice shook despite herself.
He tilted his head, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. “I can feel it, Nina. Your body knows what your mind refuses to admit. The bond… it’s awake.”
The word ignited something in her chest—a heat that made her shiver despite the chill in the room. Her wolf growled low, a warning, a plea, a roar of frustration at the pull that had begun before she even realized it.
“I will never—” she tried to say, but the words caught in her throat. His shadow loomed closer, every step deliberate, controlled, and impossible to ignore.
Her stomach flipped. Every fiber of her being recognized the touch before it happened. And then, barely an inch from her shoulder, his fingers brushed her arm.
The spark was immediate. Her body jerked, heart hammering, breath caught in her throat. Her wolf hissed, snarling, thrashing beneath her skin, trying to break free. And yet… part of her wanted to lean in, to feel it again, to surrender, even for a second.
“You feel it too,” he murmured, voice low, vibrating against her ears. “The pull… the bond. You can’t fight it.”
Her pulse spiked. She tried to step back, tried to will her body to obey, but the ground beneath her seemed to disappear. Her breath came shallow, quick, her body betraying her with every beat.
“I—will not—” she forced out, but her words rang hollow even in her own ears.
He leaned just slightly, hand lingering on her arm. A soft heat radiated from him, claiming, demanding. The mate bond pulsed between them, insistent, undeniable, and her wolf whimpered in frustration and longing.
“Do you feel that?” he asked quietly, eyes never leaving hers. “It’s not just the bond. It’s you. Your wolf, your body… even your fear. It screams for me. Deny it as you will.”
She shook her head violently. “I don’t—” Her voice caught again. Her body’s betrayal was impossible to ignore.
He stepped closer. “Soon,” he said, almost gently, “you won’t be able to resist.”
Nina pressed back against the wall, claws scraping faintly against stone. The fire in her veins, the pull in her chest, was intoxicating and terrifying. She hated him. And yet…
Her golden eyes flicked to the doorway. A shadow moved. A familiar figure—Andreina.
Her best friend peeked nervously, hands pressed to her mouth. “Nina… maybe… uh… don’t die?”
Nina rolled her eyes, exasperated. “Go away,” she hissed, glaring at her friend while simultaneously trying not to melt where she stood.
Andreina ducked instantly, squeaking, “Okay! Okay! I’ll… be invisible… I think.”
Her wolf growled low in protest, but Nina forced herself to focus back on the Alpha. His presence was overwhelming—dominant, controlled, magnetic.
He closed the remaining space between them. This time, his hand brushed hers deliberately, fingers tracing her skin lightly, sparking an almost unbearable fire. Her wolf snarled and whimpered simultaneously, caught between warning and craving.
Nina’s legs wobbled. She wanted to step back, but her feet felt rooted. Desire and fear tangled in her chest like a storm, her mind screaming at her to resist while her body betrayed her completely.
“You want to fight it,” he said softly, leaning just close enough that the warmth of his skin brushed her hair. “But your wolf wants me. Your body wants me. You can deny it, but it doesn’t change anything.”
She swallowed, trembling. Her golden eyes widened as she realized the truth: she could fight her mind, her pride, her defiance—but she couldn’t fight the bond. Not now, not ever.
Her wolf hissed, a guttural, frustrated sound that vibrated through her chest, and she pressed her back harder against the wall, fighting the heat that surged through her veins.
“You feel it,” he whispered again, brushing a strand of hair from her cheek. “Resistance or not… we are bound.”
Nina shivered, body trembling, heart thundering, and the wolf beneath her roared in frustration. She clenched her fists, forcing herself to remain upright, to resist giving in entirely.
And then—a sudden sound shattered the tension.
A torch clattered across the floor outside the room. Both froze. The Alpha’s eyes narrowed, scanning the doorway. The mate bond flared violently, warning, demanding.
Nina’s golden eyes met his, wide, terrified, and alive with the fire of the bond. Her wolf thrashed beneath her skin, roaring in protest and longing.
He leaned just slightly, fingers brushing her hair again. “Stay,” he whispered, voice low, dangerous, and impossible to resist. “The bond has begun. There is no turning back.”
Nina’s heart thudded, body trembling, wolf snarling and panting beneath her skin. Whatever waited at the door could change everything—her freedom, her fate, her life.
And she realized with a surge of both fear and something else—desire—that the first touch had been just the beginning.
The rest… was inevitable.
