Teaser Opener:
Nina thought she had made up her mind. But the mate bond is a chain that does not break easily… and Kael is the kind of Alpha who will never let go.

The forest had never felt so suffocating.
Each step Nina took, each breath she drew, pressed her deeper into a choice she wasn’t ready to make.
Her wolf wanted him. Her body betrayed her whenever his scent lingered too close, whenever his eyes — dark, unreadable — met hers. But her heart, her mind, the very blood of her ancestors screamed against it.
Kael was her enemy. He was the Alpha who should’ve been the symbol of everything she despised — cold, merciless, and carved of stone. The wolf whose shadow had fallen over her pack and snatched away her freedom.
And yet… her soul whispered another word. Mate.
Nina gritted her teeth, wrapping her arms tightly around herself as though she could crush the bond into silence. The night was quiet, but her thoughts were loud, louder than her pulse. She’d promised herself she would never bow, never yield — and yet, the memory of his touch, the way his voice had rolled like thunder, refused to leave her.
It was maddening.
Andreina stirred faintly in her sleep nearby, a soft whimper escaping her lips. Even unconscious, she seemed to sense the tension in the air. Nina’s chest ached as she looked at her friend — broken, fragile, but still here. Still fighting.
“I have to choose,” Nina whispered under her breath. “For me. For her.”
If she stayed, if she accepted the Elders’ decree, she would lose herself piece by piece. But if she ran… where could she go? The packs would hunt her. The bond would drag her back. Her golden eyes were a beacon she could never hide.
Her wolf snarled inside her, restless, torn between instinct and defiance.
She rose to her feet. The night air clung to her skin like frost, heavy with the silence of the forest. Her gaze flicked toward the border — that invisible line where her world ended and Kael’s began.
She could feel him even now. Somewhere out there, watching, waiting. She hated that part of her didn’t just fear it… but wanted it.
“No,” she hissed, shaking her head violently. “I won’t be caged.”
Her bare feet carried her forward, step by step, closer to the trees that whispered of freedom. The leaves crunched softly beneath her, each sound like a betrayal. She paused only once, looking back at Andreina’s resting form, guilt gnawing at her insides.
“I’ll come back for you,” she whispered. “I swear I will.”
And then she turned. She ran.
Her heart pounded as she darted through the forest, her golden eyes catching every gleam of moonlight. Branches clawed at her arms and legs, but she didn’t stop. Every step felt like ripping herself free from invisible chains.
Almost there. Just a little further and she’d cross into the unknown.
But the bond roared in her chest.
Her wolf jolted, hackles rising, ears straining — because she wasn’t alone.
A shadow detached itself from the darkness ahead. A figure stepped forward, tall and broad, shoulders like carved stone. His eyes gleamed like black fire as they locked onto hers.
Kael.
Her feet skidded to a halt, breath ragged, throat dry.
“You really thought you could leave.” His voice was low, deep, carrying the quiet menace of a storm about to break.
Her lips parted, but no sound came out. Her wolf was trembling, not from fear, but from recognition. The bond pulsed between them, alive, demanding.
“I…” Her words tangled in her throat. “I wasn’t—”
“Don’t lie to me.” He stepped closer, the earth seeming to bend beneath his weight. “You were going to run.”
Nina’s nails dug into her palms. “You can’t keep me here like a prisoner.”
His lips curved into something sharp, something almost cruel. “You’re not my prisoner.” He paused, eyes narrowing, voice dropping lower. “You’re my mate.”
The word cut through her like a blade.
Her body betrayed her, shuddering at the sound. Her wolf whimpered inside her chest, wanting to bow, to yield, to sink into the truth of that word. But Nina’s pride, her rage, burned hotter.
“No,” she spat, voice trembling. “I’ll never be yours.”
He closed the distance in a single step, towering over her, his shadow swallowing her whole. His hand shot out, catching her wrist before she could dart away. The heat of his touch seared through her skin, sparking the bond so violently she gasped.
“You can deny it all you want,” Kael said, his face inches from hers, his breath brushing against her lips like a taunt. “But you feel it. Just as I do.”
Her golden eyes flared, clashing against his darkness. The space between them throbbed with unspoken words, unspoken hunger.
Her chest rose and fell rapidly, her lips parting — to argue, to scream, maybe even to surrender. She didn’t know anymore.
And then—
The forest howled.
A sound tore through the night — sharp, feral, too close. Rogues. The scent hit her nose a heartbeat later, acrid and wild, crawling across her skin.
Kael’s grip tightened on her wrist as his head whipped toward the noise, his entire body shifting into Alpha mode. Protective. Dangerous. Ready to kill.
Nina’s pulse skyrocketed. The rogues were coming.
And she was trapped — between the danger in the woods, and the greater danger standing right in front of her.
