Chapter 3

I snapped to attention and rendered a proper salute to Commander Kanan, “Captain John Miller, United Earth Military, Reporting as ordered,” I said dutifully.   “Relax Captain and have a seat,” Kanan said as he saluted me back. Silas and I took the two seats in front of the large oak desk. As we sat down Kanan began speaking.   “Captain Miller do you know why you are here?” he asked   “I have been told by Silas and a couple of the guards that the reason for my incarceration was because I was found in possession of Angel Wings.” I replied locking my eyes with Kanan.   “That is correct,” he snapped back slapping his hand on his desk, “it has been determined by the Throne Council and your Earth Government that humans in possession of Angelic Artifacts be punished due to the effects that said artifacts have on the human body as well as the mind. However, you have no indications of such problems presented so how do you think that is?”    “I Honestly have no clue sir,” I replied   “So, you have no idea why we found you in possession of angel wings?” he asked   “No, I do not, and quite frankly I’m puzzled as to why I had them in the first place and furthermore why I did not turn into a husk,” I said.   Kanan leaned back in his chair interlocking his fingers over his stomach as he tapped his thumbs together. I could tell he was thinking but I was unsure of what was going through his mind. After a long pause he took a deep breath in and stood up out of his chair and walked around the desk and sat on his desk directly in front of me.   “Captain Miller, do you know what a Nephilim is?” He asked me, his piercing blue eyes felt like they were staring directly into my soul.   “Yes,” I replied confused, “A Nephilim is the offspring of an angel and a human and is considered by some to be an abomination.”    “Precisely,” He said smacking his hand across his leg. He stood back up and motioned for me and Silas to follow as he walked towards a large painting of an angel and a demon doing battle in the corner of the room. “You are correct to a point, a Nephilim is born of a human and an Angel, however only an Arch Angel can sire one,” he stated matter of factly.   He looked at me and then turned back to the painting. “While most of our kind think of Nephilim as abominations because of the tainted human blood within them, many of us recognize the power that a Nephilim possesses because of their parentage.” He said as he started walking to the next painting of an angel and demon standing over a depiction of humanity fighting. “The Nephilim are powerful and only compared in power to the Arch Angels and yet they possess free will, unlike the angels a Nephilim can do and act as they see fit and while angels do have free will they are still bound by the laws of god.”    “Ok so what does this have to do with me,” I asked sarcastically but yet I knew the answer already. Kanan stopped and turned towards me and locked his gaze with mine.   “Captain Miller we know you have no clue, but I am informing you that you John Miller are a Nephilim,” He said putting his hands on my shoulders.   I felt my throat fall into my stomach as the revelation of me being a Nephilim hit my ears. At first, I cracked a smile thinking that Silas and Kanan we’re messing with me. But when I looked at Silas, his stoic expression confirmed what Kanan had said. I felt my body go cold and I began to rationalize and disprove what Kanan told me.    “How can that be,” I asked in disbelief, “I’m human, I bleed, and I get sick, I get hurt.”    “you were adopted by Colonel Miller and your mother right,” he asked tilting his head to the side, “you are not blood relation to the people you call your parents.    “Well yeah,” I replied airily, “a lot of babies are without parents these days, it’s not that uncommon for someone to find one after a city falls.”    “That’s true but your parents didn’t find you after a city fell did, they,” He asked inquisitively.   “No,” I replied dropping my head, “I was found on their doorstep one night 27 years ago.” I was in shock at this revelation of my true parentage, how could I be a Nephilim, how could I be anything more than human. I turned eyes back to Kanan with tears running down my cheeks, “I can’t be a Nephilim, how can I be one if I can get a broken bone, get sick, Hell I’ve cut myself. How is it I’ve never known.”   “You’re still human as well John,” he whispered, “you might have gone your entire life without knowing because you thought yourself human. You lived your life as if you might die tomorrow from reckless actions, if you hadn’t fallen like you did you might have never known.”   “Yeah, well how do you know,” I snapped back shrugging my shoulder from his hand. “How is it you have this information and I know nothing of it.” “You’ve shared an extended connection with a muse correct?” He asked    “Yeah,” I replied remembering my earlier conversation with Silas and the fact that a muse can access everything about your life from birth, “so Norma Jean told you.” “Yes,” he replied he turned away and walked to another painting depicting Christ opening the seven seals and releasing the four horsemen, putting his hand into his pocket he continued, “because you have been Linked with her, she discovered that fact whilst revelating your life however could not reveal to us the true nature of your parentage.”   “So, you brought me here to tell me I’m an abomination to your kind but can’t tell me which bastard....” I challenged and before I could finish my sentence his face was close to mine; his eyes were no longer blue but white and his voice sang with an overtone. “I did not say we did not know,” he hissed, “we have tracked and recorded every Nephilim’s creation since the dawn of man, we know which Arch Angel sired one and what their purpose was but with you it would seem that no one wants to take credit for you in heaven so we can only assume one remaining.” His words rang in my ears as my mind went numb, his eyes turned back blue as the realization of who my true father was entered my mind, he spoke the words, but I couldn’t hear them. “You are the son of the morning star. The son of Lucifer.”   “How can that be,” I managed to choke out, “am I to be another Antichrist to challenge the army of heaven?”   “No,” Kanan chuckled, “there is only one who is the opposite to Christ, and she has Been around for 300 years, we can only assume your existence is for another purpose or merely accidental.”    “I don’t believe you,” I replied, I thought I was a good person. I helped people out when they needed it, I joined the Military to help protect those who couldn’t protect themselves during this chaotic time. Now I was just hollow and everything I had ever done or said was a lie.    “So am I destined for evil then, am I going to turn on everything I love and in believe in.” I asked.    “No John, Lucifer’s transgressions do not define who you are. You are who you are because you chose to be that way, that is what it means to be human.” He replied with a reassuring smile on his face.   “So, what now?” I asked not sure what to do. “Well, I’m glad you asked,” he said motioning me back to his desk.    “Because of your Angelic Parentage and untapped ability, it is only fitting that you begin training under someone who has experience with your kind.” He stated sitting down in his chair. “Training a Nephilim to understand what he is capable of is not something most angels are able to do since there have only been a hand full since creation.”   “I just can’t leave and go find a random angel and train under someone; I have my duties as an officer of the U.E.M.” I chortled.    “Not anymore,” he said flashing a toothy grin, “I have spoken with your commanding officer, as well as the Generals and you a hereby relieved of duty in the Earth Military and you are transferred for service in the Army of Heaven.”             I was in disbelief and was unsure if they could do that. I mean yeah if I’m not just human but part Angel as well it would make sense to find someone who could teach me but serving in the Army of heaven felt like it was going to be a bad idea.   “So, what does that mean, that I’m going to have to start over in the Army of Heaven, or will I be kept at my present rank.” I asked curious.   “For now, you will be nothing, it is imperative that you learn how to use your abilities and tap into your potential first,” he said, “you don’t send an untrained soldier into combat, however when you return you will be reinstated at your proper rank.”    “Ok so where do I go, who do I talk to then to begin my training.” I demanded.    “Fortunately for you there is one such angel among us and he has trained many of your kind and will help you learn,” he said, “Silas here will be the one to oversee your training.”   “This just all seems ridiculous Kanan, I mean me a Nephilim I’m still not sure if this is a joke or if your serious,” I somewhat loudly waving my arms.    “Oh, I assure you John I am quite serious,” he replied, “you still don’t believe me, do you?”    “No,” I scoffed.   “Very well there is a simple test, you are aware of what happens to a human when he uses an angelic weapon correct?” He asked picking up the sword resting under the silver chest plate armor next to his desk and unsheathed it pointing the sword at me. “Yes, I am,” I replied strongly unabated by having a sword in face.   “Of course, you are,” he said excitedly jerking the tip of the sword in my face.    “However, do you know what happens when a Nephilim or an Angel wields an angelic weapon,” he asked.   “No,” I replied wondering what he was planning but either way I didn’t like where this was going.  “Take it,” He said flipping the sword around handing it handle first towards me. I looked at him confused as I reached out my hand. Before I took the sword, I stopped and hesitated to look at Kanan and Silas who both looked as if they were anticipating what was coming next.   I took the sword and held it waiting for something to happen. We stood there for a moment in silence as I held the sword waiting for something to happen. I looked at Kanan and Silas not sure of what to expect, as I was about to say something, I felt my muscles give and I collapsed to ground on one knee, pain shot up my arm as if I was be blasted with needles. I tried to let go but my hand refused.   I wondered what was going on, the sword wasn’t that heavy, but I looked at the sword and it had changed color and size. Before it was no bigger than a small sword that could be wielded by one hand but now it large and had almost doubled in size. It was no longer silver but instead the blade looked like it had rolling black waves in it. The handle was no longer gold but instead was black and the hilt looked as though it had fire inside the metal.   “What is this,” I asked Silas and Kanan who looked paler than usual.   “It would seem captain miller that you are destined for greater things in life than previously imagined,” Kanan Replied almost gasping for his words.            Kanan snatched the sword from me and it returned to its smaller form. As I regained my footing and stood back up, He set it back with the armor and turned to face me.   “There is much for you to learn Captain and you have a short time to learn it, so I suggest that you heed Silas’ teachings and as you say on earth be all that you can be,” he said before returning to his desk.   “You are dismissed, and I wish you the best of luck,” He said as he waved us off.            Silas bowed and ushered me out the door, I was still baffled by what just happened as we exited the office and stood in the sitting area. “What the hell just happened,” I asked turning to Silas.   “You will be given temporary quarters for the next couple of days while I prepare for our departure. An old friend will be arriving soon and then we can leave but for now you will meet me at the sparring grounds in the morning ready to begin your training,” Silas said Sternly.   “Ok,” I replied more confused than ever.   “Don’t worry John I won’t let anything happen to you, but it is imperative that you heed all of the knowledge you will receive.” He told me quietly.
