Chapter 15: The First Memory Seed
The chamber erupted into chaos.
The moment the Forgotten Queen touched the Tree of Origins, a wave of darkness rippled through its roots.
Silver leaves fell like rain.
Where they struck the ground, they dissolved into black ash.
The Tree let out a low, mournful sound—not with a voice, but with the memories it carried.
Aiden clutched his head.
He saw countless moments flash before his eyes.
A mother singing a lullaby.
A father teaching his son to carve wood.
A child chasing butterflies through a meadow.
Then, one by one, the memories faded into nothingness.
"They're disappearing," Lyra whispered, tears filling her eyes.
---
The Forgotten Queen smiled.
"When memories die," she said softly, "the world becomes easier to control."
She stretched out both hands.
Dark vines burst from the ground, wrapping around the Tree's roots.
The silver glow of the chamber began to dim.
The Librarian fell to one knee.
"The Tree is weakening."
"If it dies..."
"There will be no more memories to protect."
---
Aiden looked at the crystal in his pocket—the Memory Seed.
The Keeper's words echoed in his mind.
"There are thirteen. Each one restores what the Void destroys."
Without hesitation, Aiden removed the glowing crystal.
"What do I do with it?"
The Librarian pointed toward the roots.
"Return it to the Tree."
"It's the only way."
Aiden sprinted forward.
The Forgotten Queen saw him and laughed.
"You are too late."
She raised one hand.
A wall of black thorns shot from the earth, blocking his path.
Lyra rushed beside him.
"I'll clear the way!"
She lifted her silver pendant.
A brilliant beam of light burst from it, shattering the thorn wall into thousands of glowing fragments.
"Go!"
---
Aiden reached the base of the Tree.
Its bark had grown cold beneath his hands.
The Tree was dying.
He placed the Memory Seed into a hollow in the trunk.
For a heartbeat...
Nothing happened.
Then the crystal dissolved into pure silver light.
The light spread through the roots like flowing water.
One by one, blackened branches regained their silver leaves.
The chamber filled with warmth.
The Tree was healing.
The Forgotten Queen screamed.
"No!"
She stumbled backward as the silver light surrounded her.
Her dark vines crumbled into dust.
For the first time, fear appeared on her face.
---
The Tree of Origins released a pulse of radiant energy.
The Whisperers were thrown back across the chamber.
Some dissolved instantly.
Others fled into the darkness.
The Forgotten Queen disappeared in a cloud of black mist.
Only her chilling laughter remained.
"This is only the beginning..."
---
Silence returned.
The Tree now glowed brighter than before, though many of its branches were still lifeless.
The Librarian smiled weakly.
"You've restored the First Memory Seed."
"Twelve remain."
Aiden nodded.
"Then we'll find them."
The Keeper placed a hand on his shoulder.
"You've taken your first true step as the Guardian."
"But every Memory Seed will demand a greater sacrifice."
---
As they prepared to leave the chamber, the Tree suddenly released a single silver fruit.
It floated gently into Aiden's hands.
The moment he touched it, a new vision appeared.
He saw a frozen mountain beneath the northern lights.
At its peak stood a temple carved entirely from ice.
Inside, another Memory Seed rested on a crystal altar.
A voice echoed through the vision.
"Seek the Temple of Silent Snow."
"The Second Memory Seed waits where even echoes freeze."
The vision faded.
Aiden looked north.
Their next journey had already begun.
Far beneath the mountains, hidden behind layers of ancient stone, the Hollow King slowly opened his eyes.
He smiled faintly.
"The Guardian is becoming stronger."
Then his expression darkened.
"But so is the Void."
And deep within the endless darkness, something enormous stirred.
It had no name.
No face.
No memory.
Only hunger.
