Chapter 12: The Book That Chose Its Reader
A deafening c***k echoed through the Forgotten Library.
The crystal walls trembled as hundreds of Whisperers pressed against them. Wherever their shadowy hands touched the crystal, it slowly turned black.
The Librarian held the Chronicle of the First Age tightly against her chest.
"They cannot be allowed inside."
The Keeper stepped forward.
"How long will the barriers hold?"
She closed her eyes, listening to the library itself.
"Minutes."
"No more."
---
Outside, the Collector removed his silver mask.
For the first time, Aiden saw his face.
He looked surprisingly young.
His silver eyes were calm, almost kind.
Yet there was an ancient sadness in them.
"I don't want to destroy the Library," the Collector called through the crystal walls.
"I only want the Chronicle."
The Librarian answered firmly.
"It doesn't belong to you."
"It belongs to the Guardian."
The Collector smiled.
"Then let him decide."
---
The floor beneath Aiden began to glow.
Silver symbols spread outward in a perfect circle.
The Chronicle slipped from the Librarian's hands and floated into the air.
"No!" she cried.
"The book is choosing."
The ancient volume opened by itself.
Its blank pages turned rapidly.
Then they stopped.
Letters appeared, glowing like liquid silver.
Only Aiden could read them.
«The first lie was told to save the world.»
Another sentence appeared.
«The Hollow King is not the beginning...»
«He is the last guardian of the First Gate.»
Aiden's breath caught.
"The First Gate?"
The Keeper's face lost all color.
"Impossible..."
"There was never supposed to be another gate."
The Librarian looked at him sadly.
"There always was."
"You simply forgot."
---
Suddenly, one of the crystal walls shattered.
A dozen Whisperers surged into the Library.
Books flew from the shelves as the creatures rushed forward.
Lyra drew the silver pendant from around her neck.
Its light burst across the room, forcing several Whisperers back.
"They're too many!" she shouted.
The Keeper slammed his staff onto the floor.
Ancient runes flared to life.
A wall of silver fire cut across the hall, separating the Whisperers from the others.
"Go!" he shouted to Aiden.
"Take the Chronicle!"
"I won't leave you!"
"You must!"
---
The Collector walked calmly through the broken wall.
The Whisperers parted to let him pass.
He stopped only a few feet from Aiden.
"I have waited centuries for this moment."
"You could end all of this."
"How?"
"Open the final chapter."
The Collector pointed to the Chronicle.
"It contains the name of the one who created the Nameless Void."
Aiden looked down.
The last pages were sealed with a silver lock.
They refused to open.
The Collector frowned.
"It still doesn't trust me."
The Librarian stepped beside Aiden.
"It never will."
"The Chronicle can only be opened by someone willing to sacrifice what they love most."
Silence filled the Library.
Aiden slowly closed the book.
"If that's true..."
"I'm not ready."
The Collector nodded.
"I expected that answer."
For the first time, there was no anger in his voice.
Only disappointment.
---
Without warning, the ground beneath the Library split apart.
A blinding column of black light erupted from deep beneath the valley.
The Whisperers screamed.
Even the Collector stumbled backward.
The Librarian stared into the darkness.
"It has awakened..."
Far below the earth, something far older than the Hollow King slowly opened a single enormous eye.
Its voice echoed through every corner of the Library.
"I remember... nothing."
The lights went out.
The Chronicle snapped shut.
And every person in the Library suddenly forgot why they had come there.
Except Aiden.
The Eye of Remembrance around his neck burned with brilliant silver light.
He was now the only one who still remembered the truth.
