Chapter 11: The Forgotten Library The journey began before sunrise. Mist clung to the hills surrounding Ebon Hollow, and the forest seemed quieter than ever. Aiden walked at the front, the Eye of Remembrance hanging from a chain around his neck. Since leaving the House Without Shadows, the pendant had grown slightly warmer with every passing hour. Lyra noticed. "It's reacting to something." Aiden nodded. "I can feel it pulling me north." The Keeper glanced toward the distant mountains. "Then the Library is calling." --- For hours they followed a trail that appeared on no map. Ancient stone markers emerged from the earth every few hundred feet, each engraved with the same symbol—a single open eye surrounded by thirteen stars. Mrs. Rowan stopped beside one of the markers. "My grandfather used to tell me these were only legends." The Keeper smiled faintly. "In Ebon Hollow, legends usually become tomorrow's problems." --- As the sun reached its highest point, the forest suddenly ended. Before them stretched a wide valley filled with white flowers that swayed despite the still air. In the center stood a magnificent building carved entirely from pale crystal. Its towers reached into the clouds. Its walls shimmered like moonlight. No doors. No windows. Only endless shelves visible through the transparent walls, filled with countless glowing books. "The Forgotten Library," Lyra whispered. "It's beautiful." "It's dangerous," the Keeper corrected. "Every book inside contains a memory the world has lost." --- Aiden approached the crystal wall. The pendant around his neck began to glow. A beam of silver light shot from the Eye of Remembrance and struck the wall. The crystal rippled like water. A doorway slowly appeared. The moment it opened, a voice echoed through the valley. "Only those willing to remember may enter." The four companions stepped inside. --- The air smelled of old parchment and cedarwood. Bookshelves stretched farther than Aiden could see. Some books floated gently through the air. Others whispered to one another in forgotten languages. At the center of the library stood a circular desk. Behind it sat a woman with silver hair and robes woven from threads of light. She looked no older than thirty, yet her eyes carried the weight of centuries. Without looking up from the book in her hands, she spoke. "I've been expecting you, Guardian." Aiden stepped forward. "Who are you?" She closed the book carefully. "My name has been forgotten." "So everyone calls me..." "The Librarian." --- The Librarian studied Aiden for a long moment. "You carry the Thirteenth Soul." "Yes." "And the Eye of Remembrance." "Yes." She sighed. "Then the prophecy has begun." Lyra frowned. "What prophecy?" The Librarian walked toward an enormous locked bookshelf. Only one book rested upon it. Unlike the others, it was bound in black leather with silver edges. Dust did not cling to it. Time itself seemed unable to touch it. She carefully lifted the book. "This is the Chronicle of the First Age." "It records the truth before history was rewritten." Aiden reached for it. The moment his fingers touched the cover, the entire library shook. Books fell from the shelves. Candles extinguished themselves. A deep c***k spread across the crystal floor. The Librarian's calm expression vanished. "No..." "They've found us." --- Outside, the peaceful valley had changed. The white flowers withered instantly. The sky turned black. Hundreds of Whisperers surrounded the Library in complete silence. Then they stepped aside. A lone figure emerged from the shadows. He wore a long crimson cloak. His face was hidden beneath a cracked silver mask. The Collector. He looked up at the crystal towers and smiled. "I've come for the Chronicle." The Librarian gripped the ancient book tightly. "If he takes it..." "The last true history of the world will be erased forever." The crystal walls began to c***k. The siege of the Forgotten Library had begun. End of Chapter 11
