Chapter 16: Kasey’s Secrets The city skyline blurred past the window as Ray’s car sped through the streets, the engine’s steady hum filling the silence between them. Rolla stared out, lost in thought, Russel’s cryptic words gnawing at her mind. No matter how much she tried to push them away, they clung to her, unsettling and persistent. Ray, as usual, remained quiet, though she could sense the tension radiating from him. Russel had that effect on him—an unease that was only growing as the web of supernatural intrigue tightened around them. Tonight, Ray was taking her to another exclusive gathering, but he had said very little about it. Just that it was smaller, more intimate, and important. There was something in his voice, a note of caution that set her on edge. It was as if they were walking into something dangerous, something neither of them could fully control. The sleek, modern building they pulled up to was unassuming at first glance, nestled between towering skyscrapers in the heart of the city. It had clean lines, sharp edges, and a kind of quiet elegance. But Rolla knew better by now—there was nothing ordinary about any place Ray took her. As Ray stepped out and offered her his hand, Rolla’s heart quickened. She could feel the weight of the night pressing down on her, a silent reminder of the power plays she had been thrust into. “Stay close,” Ray murmured, his grip on her hand firm. Rolla nodded, her pulse steadying as they walked into the building. Inside, the space was as sleek and contemporary as its exterior—polished floors, minimalist decor, and expansive windows that framed the city’s glittering skyline. Yet, beneath the pristine design, there was an undercurrent of something more. The energy in the room felt thick, almost electric. Rolla could sense it, the subtle hum of supernatural power just beneath the surface. They hadn’t been inside for long before Rolla spotted a familiar figure. Kasey Drayton. Confident, charismatic, and far too comfortable in this world, the hybrid moved through the crowd like she belonged, her sharp eyes flicking toward Rolla and Ray the moment they entered. Kasey’s lips curved into a knowing smile as she made her way over to them. “Rolla, Ray,” she greeted them smoothly, her voice dripping with amusement. “I didn’t expect to see you both here tonight.” Ray’s posture stiffened, his tone cool. “We were invited.” “Of course,” Kasey purred, her attention shifting to Rolla. “After all, Rolla’s presence is becoming quite the event in our world.” Rolla forced a tight smile, her unease growing. It was true that everywhere they went, she could feel eyes on her, whispers trailing in her wake. But she hadn’t asked for any of this. She didn’t want to be the center of supernatural speculation. “Why are we really here?” Rolla asked, cutting straight to the point. She had had enough of the games, the cryptic looks, and the constant feeling that everyone else knew more about her than she did. Kasey’s smile widened. “Straight to business. I like that.” Her voice was playful, but there was a sharpness underneath. “Tonight’s gathering is more than just a social event. It’s a chance for certain key players to discuss matters of power, influence… and people like you, Rolla.” “People like me?” Rolla frowned. Kasey’s eyes gleamed. “Hybrids. Those of us who don’t quite fit into one category. You may not realize it yet, but you’re incredibly valuable, Rolla. And that makes you dangerous, too.” Ray’s grip on Rolla’s arm tightened, a silent warning. “She’s not here to be anyone’s pawn.” Kasey raised a brow, clearly amused. “Pawn? Oh no, Ray. Rolla’s far from that. She’s a key player, whether you like it or not.” Rolla could feel the tension building between them, but it wasn’t just about Kasey’s words. It was the pull of something deeper, something that had been stirring inside her since she first entered this world. She wanted answers—needed them. And Kasey seemed more than willing to provide what Ray couldn’t. “I want to know what I am,” Rolla said, her voice steadier than she felt. She looked Kasey directly in the eyes. “If you know something, tell me.” Kasey’s expression softened slightly, her playful demeanor fading. “I know you’ve been feeling lost. Like you don’t belong here or anywhere. It’s hard being a hybrid—especially one who doesn’t know her own power. But I can help you, Rolla. I can show you what you’re capable of.” Ray’s voice cut through, sharp and protective. “She doesn’t need your help, Kasey.” Kasey’s gaze flicked to him, and for a moment, there was something almost sad in her eyes. “Ray, you can’t protect her from this forever. Sooner or later, she’s going to have to face the truth about what she is.” “And what truth is that?” Rolla asked, feeling the weight of Kasey’s words settle heavily on her shoulders. Kasey stepped closer, her tone soft but filled with conviction. “That you’re not just powerful, Rolla. You’re something more. Something this world hasn’t seen in a long time. But you’ll never understand it if you let Ray keep you in the dark.” Rolla’s heart pounded. She could feel the tension between them, the unspoken battle for control. Ray had always been there to protect her, to shield her from the dangers of the mystic world. But Kasey was offering her something different—answers, power, and control over her own fate. And Rolla, tired of being in the dark, found herself torn. “What are you offering me?” Rolla asked, her voice quiet but determined. Kasey’s smile returned, but it was softer now, almost reassuring. “I want to help you unlock your power. You’ve only scratched the surface, but once you tap into what’s inside you, you’ll see this world for what it really is. And you’ll be stronger than you ever imagined.” Rolla’s breath caught at the thought. For so long, she had felt different, like something inside her was waiting to be unleashed. And now, here was Kasey, offering her a path to that power, a way to understand the parts of herself that had always been hidden. But then Ray’s voice interrupted her thoughts, firm and resolute. “You’re not using her for your own gain, Kasey.” Kasey’s eyes softened as she looked at him. “I’m not using her, Ray. I’m offering her a choice. Something you haven’t been willing to do.” Rolla glanced between them, feeling the weight of their words pressing down on her. Ray had always been her protector, her guide through this dangerous world. But Kasey’s offer—her understanding of what it meant to be a hybrid—was tempting in a way Rolla hadn’t expected. “I want to know,” Rolla said quietly, her decision clear. “I want to understand who I am.” Ray’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t argue. He knew this was Rolla’s choice, and he couldn’t make it for her. Kasey’s eyes gleamed with satisfaction, though there was no malice in her expression. “Then let me help you.” Rolla nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. She didn’t know what the future held, but she knew one thing for sure: she couldn’t keep running from the truth. As the night went on, Rolla could feel the eyes of the mystic world on her, each glance a reminder of the power and potential that lay within her. With Kasey’s guidance, she was ready to face whatever came next. But even as she stepped deeper into this world, Rolla couldn’t shake the feeling that she was being pulled in different directions. Ray’s protectiveness tugged at one side, Kasey’s allure at the other. And somewhere, in the shadows, Russel’s quiet warnings still echoed in her mind. The deeper she went, the more the stakes rose. And the more dangerous it became.
