Chapter Ten: An Offer

1136 Words
The walk to Brack's office felt longer this time, heavier, every step accompanied by the memory of that abruptly silenced scream still echoing in Isabella's ears. Guards flanked them tighter than before, faces carefully blank in a way that told her something significant had shifted overnight. Brack was waiting behind his desk when they entered, but he wasn't alone this time. A man stood near the window, expensive suit, silver hair combed back with precision, hands clasped behind his back in a posture of practiced patience. Isabella didn't recognize him, but she felt Salvatore go rigid beside her the moment they stepped through the door. "Vittorio," Salvatore said, voice tight with barely restrained hostility. "Salvatore." The man turned, offering a smile that didn't reach his eyes. "You're looking well, considering the circumstances." "What are you doing here." "Business." Vittorio's gaze slid toward Isabella, assessing, cold. "And this must be the auditor everyone's been talking about. Miss Marchetti. I've heard a great deal about you." Brack cleared his throat from behind the desk, gesturing toward the chairs. "Mr. Varela has requested a meeting. Given recent developments overnight, I thought it prudent to arrange it immediately." The name detonated in Isabella's chest. Varela. This was the man behind everything behind her conviction, behind Salvatore's, behind the note warning them to run. "What happened last night," Salvatore said, ignoring the chairs entirely. "The scream. Who was it." "An unfortunate incident," Vittorio said smoothly. "A woman in the east wing who apparently knew too much about certain financial matters and decided sharing that knowledge with the wrong people was worth the risk." His eyes flicked toward Isabella again, deliberate, pointed. "A cautionary tale, really, about the dangers of loose information inside a place like this." Isabella's blood ran cold. The threat couldn't have been clearer if he'd spoken it directly. "Get to the point," Salvatore said. Vittorio's smile widened slightly. "Very well. I have a proposition. Miss Marchetti possesses knowledge regarding certain financial irregularities she uncovered during her employment. Knowledge that, frankly, poses a significant liability to my family's interests. I'm prepared to offer a solution that benefits everyone in this room." "I'm listening," Isabella said, surprising herself with the steadiness in her voice. "Sign a formal retraction. State publicly that your original findings regarding Vantage Logistics were mistaken, a result of inexperience or misunderstanding of standard industry practices. In exchange, I'll ensure your appeal moves forward smoothly, with evidence surfacing that supports your innocence in the embezzlement charges." "You're offering to help clear my name in exchange for lying about what I found." "I'm offering you a way out of this facility that doesn't end the way that woman's night ended," Vittorio said, voice hardening slightly beneath the polish. "Consider it carefully, Miss Marchetti. Options like this don't remain on the table indefinitely." Salvatore stepped forward, positioning himself slightly in front of Isabella, his voice low and lethal. "She's not signing anything." "This isn't your decision to make, Salvatore." Vittorio's eyes narrowed. "Though I suppose I understand your interest in the matter. Word travels fast inside these walls. Seems you've grown rather attached to your cellmate." "Careful," Salvatore said quietly. "Or what? You'll do something about it from inside a cell?" Vittorio's smile turned cold. "You're not the only one with an offer to make today. I understand your appeal hearing has been quietly moved up. Interesting how these things work out, isn't it? A word from the right person, and suddenly the wheels of justice move considerably faster." The implication hung heavy in the room, that Vittorio held influence not just over Isabella's fate but over Salvatore's too, and the realization settled over Isabella with sickening clarity. "You're trying to use my case against him," she said slowly. "If I refuse your offer, something happens to me. If I accept, you use it to manipulate his appeal." "You're quicker than I expected." Vittorio's smile didn't waver. "Take the offer, Miss Marchetti. Sign the retraction. It's the only version of this where everyone walks away intact." Isabella looked at Salvatore, searching his face for guidance, for some sign of what she should do. His jaw was tight, his eyes dark with a fury he was visibly struggling to contain, but beneath that fury she saw something else, fear, carefully hidden, fear that whatever she chose next might cost them both everything. "I need time to think," she said finally. "You have until tomorrow morning." Vittorio moved toward the door, pausing just before he reached it, glancing back with an expression that made Isabella's skin crawl. "I'd advise against discussing this further with your cellmate, Miss Marchetti. Conversations inside that cell have a way of reaching me faster than you'd think." He left without another word, and the moment the door closed behind him, Brack leaned forward across his desk, his earlier smugness replaced by something almost like urgency. "You should take the deal," he said quietly. "Whatever loyalty you think you've built in that cell, it won't protect you from what happens if you refuse." Salvatore's hand closed around Isabella's arm, guiding her firmly toward the door. "We're done here." They walked back to the cell in silence, guards trailing close behind, and it wasn't until the door slid shut and sealed them back into their small concrete world that Salvatore finally spoke, his voice raw with something Isabella hadn't heard from him before desperation. "You can't sign that retraction," he said. "If you do, you're handing them exactly what they need to bury both of us permanently." "And if I don't sign it, they kill me the way they killed that woman last night." Salvatore's eyes locked with hers, dark and fierce. "Then we find another way. Tonight. Before Vittorio gets his answer tomorrow morning." "What other way is there, Salvatore? He controls the warden. He controls guards inside this facility. He clearly has someone feeding him information from inside this cell." Her voice cracked with the weight of everything crashing down at once. "We're trapped." Salvatore was quiet for a long moment, and when he spoke again, his voice had dropped to something low and dangerous, a tone she hadn't heard from him before. "There's one option I haven't told you about," he said. "One I swore I'd never use unless I had absolutely no other choice." "What option." He looked at her, something in his expression shifting into a resolve so absolute it frightened her. "A way out of this building," he said. "For both of us. Tonight." Before Isabella could ask him to explain, the cell block lights snapped off entirely, plunging them into total darkness, and somewhere down the corridor, she heard the unmistakable sound of a cell door being forced open by hands that weren't supposed to have access to it at all.
