KATIE WOKE UP WITH the same riot of emotions she’d gone to bed with: She was shaken and disappointed in herself, but profoundly grateful for Brendan giving her space, even if it had ended with them yelling at each other. Again. She couldn’t imagine ever feeling competent enough to deal with the choices that loomed in front of her. As she went through her show day routine at the arena — stretching, ice for her knee, small high-protein meals, and more stretching — Brendan was nowhere to be seem. That was fine.
