Elena sat on the bed, her mind blank. She had tried the door three times, tried the window once, and even shouted for help until her throat burned. No one came. Her eyes were swollen from crying. Her body felt weak, but her heart was louder than her thoughts. She needed to get out. She stood again and looked around the room. The handle on the window was strong, but the frame looked loose. She pushed, kicked, and hit it. The sound echoed. The glass didn’t break, but one side shifted slightly. She pushed harder. It moved. Her heart jumped. She squeezed her hand between the frame and pulled it again. Cold air came through. It was night outside. She could see lights below, a tall fence, and two guards standing near the gate. She swallowed hard. She could make it if she jumped fast.
