Chapter 4

1512 Words
The ocean had gone still. Too still. Adrian noticed it first, the unnatural quiet between waves as the gray-suited man approached across the sand. Isabella's body had gone rigid beside him. "Daniel Alvarez," she muttered. Adrian's gaze sharpened. "You know him?" "Not well. He left the island after his father died." Daniel stopped a few feet away. He looked to be in his early thirties, with lean, tired eyes and a jaw tight with contained emotion. "You two look comfortable," Daniel said dryly. Adrian's posture shifted slightly, protective without being obvious. "State your purpose." Daniel let out a quiet laugh. "Straight to business. Figures." His gaze moved to Isabella. "I wasn't sure you'd show up," he said. "You said it was important," she replied steadily. Adrian's eyes flicked to her. "You knew he was coming?" "I got a message an hour ago." Daniel tilted his head. "You didn't tell him?" She didn't respond. Pressure thickened. "Let's skip the pleasantries," Daniel said, pulling something from inside his jacket. "You're digging into the merger." Adrian's expression didn't change. "That's an assumption." "It's not." Daniel handed Isabella a slim flash drive. "My father didn't die of a heart attack," he said quietly. The air shifted. Isabella felt her pulse hammering. "What are you saying?" she asked. "I'm saying," Daniel continued, "that he was under investigation. Quietly. He found irregular transfers linked to the merger and then suddenly… he collapsed." Adrian stepped forward slightly. "What irregular transfers?" Daniel looked at him directly now. "Two offshore accounts." Adrian's jaw tightened. "We know about one." Daniel's eyebrows lifted slightly. "Then you’re behind." Isabella's stomach dropped. "There's a second," Daniel said. "Registered under a trust. Beneficiary undisclosed." "Under which family?" Isabella demanded. Daniel's gaze flickered between them. "That's the problem," he replied. "It connects to both." Vale Tower, Private Office The flash drive loaded slowly on Adrian's encrypted system. Financial logs. Bank transfers. Internal memos. Daniel stood near the window, arms crossed. Isabella sat across from Adrian's desk, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. Adrian scrolled through the files in silence. The first offshore account matched what he had seen earlier, funds routed through Vale Holdings. But the second account… It was registered under something called Maris Trust Holdings. Adrian's eyes narrowed. "That name doesn't belong to either family," Isabella said. "No," Adrian agreed quietly. "It belongs to a joint subsidiary created three months before the merger talks began." Daniel nodded. "My father flagged it as suspicious." "Why?" Isabella asked. "Because the trust had no operational footprint. It existed solely to move capital." Adrian leaned back in his chair. "How much?" he asked. Daniel's voice lowered. "Enough to destabilize either company." Silence filled the room. Isabella's thoughts spiraled. "If the money was split," she said slowly, "then someone from both sides had access." "Or," Daniel countered, "someone wanted it to look that way." Adrian's fingers tapped once against the desk. Measured. Controlled. "Who else knew about this trust?" he asked. "My father. Possibly Victor Vale. Possibly Rafael Moreno." Isabella felt something c***k inside her chest. "You don't know that," she said sharply. Daniel's expression softened slightly. "I know my father was scared." "Of who?" "Of both of them." Moreno Manor, Same Night Rafael Moreno sat alone in his study. The lights were off except for a single desk lamp casting shadows along the walls. The old framed photographs felt heavier tonight. He opened a drawer slowly and removed a sealed envelope. It was addressed in Victor Vale's handwriting. Unopened. He stared at it for a long time. Then, for the first time in fifteen years, he broke the seal. Vale Tower, Later Adrian walked Daniel to the elevator. "I'm not doing this for you," Daniel said quietly. "I didn't assume you were." "I'm doing it because whatever happened destroyed my father long before it killed him." Adrian's expression remained collected. "If you're lying." "I'm not." Daniel paused. "Be careful who you trust." The elevator doors closed. Adrian remained still for a moment. Then turned back toward his office. Isabella was standing by the window now. The ocean stretched endlessly beyond the glass. "Do you think he's telling the truth?" she asked. "Yes." Her breath caught slightly. "That was fast." "He didn't come here to manipulate. He came here angry." "And anger equals honesty?" "Often." She turned to face him. "So what now?" Adrian walked toward her slowly. "Now we find out who created Maris Trust Holdings." "And if it leads to your father?" His jaw tightened. "Then I will confront him." "And if it leads to mine?" He met her gaze fully. "Then I expect you to do the same." The words weren't cruel. They were fair. And that made them heavier. The Confrontation, Moreno Manor Isabella arrived home past midnight. The house was quiet. Too quiet. She walked toward the study and found her father sitting at his desk. The opened envelope lay in front of him. He looked older tonight. "Papá." He didn't look surprised to see her. "You went to him again." "Yes." Rafael nodded slowly. "And what did you learn?" She stepped inside and closed the door. "There was a second offshore account." His expression froze. "Called Maris Trust Holdings." The color drained from his face. "You know it," she said. He didn't deny it. Her heart began pounding violently. "You knew about it." "Yes." The admission felt like a physical blow. "Why didn't you say anything?" "Because," he said hoarsely, "it was created to protect you." She stared at him. "Protect me from what?" "From being collateral." Her voice rose. "Collateral in what?" "In a power struggle you were never meant to inherit." Her chest felt tight. "Did you move the money?" "No." "Did Victor?" "I don't know." "Then who?" Rafael closed his eyes briefly. "Carlos." The name echoed painfully. "Carlos Alvarez?" "Yes." She shook her head. "Daniel said his father was scared." "He was," Rafael whispered. "Because he realized too late that he was being used." "By who?" Rafael looked at her precisely. "By both sides." The room spun. "You're saying you knew?" "I knew something was wrong," he corrected. "But by the time I confronted Victor, the damage was done." "And the merger collapsed." "Yes." "And his wife died." "Yes." The weight of it settled suffocatingly. "Papá… did you ever tell Adrian the truth?" "No." "Why?" "Because Victor threatened to expose the trust publicly." Her stomach dropped. "Expose it how?" "He implied it would look like embezzlement." She felt sick. "Did you take any money?" "Never." "Then why were you afraid?" Rafael's voice broke slightly. "Because perception destroys faster than truth can defend." Vale Tower, The Father and Son Victor Vale rarely entered his son's office unannounced. Tonight, he did. Adrian didn't look up immediately. "I've been reviewing some archived financial records," Adrian said calmly. Victor walked further inside. "Have you." "Yes." Silence. Adrian finally met his father's gaze. "Maris Trust Holdings." Victor's expression did not change. "That name shouldn't concern you." "It does." Victor sighed faintly. "Fifteen years ago, your inexperience made you blind to the realities of negotiation." "I was nineteen." "And emotional." Adrian's jaw tightened. "Did you authorize transfers to that trust?" Victor walked toward the window. "Power requires flexibility." "That's not an answer." Victor turned. "I ensured Vale Industries would not be vulnerable." "At the cost of what?" "At the cost of illusion." Adrian's voice lowered. "Did you sabotage the merger?" Victor's eyes hardened. "I prevented dependency." Silence thundered between them. "And Mom?" Adrian asked quietly. Victor's composure cracked for a fraction of a second. "She was fragile." "She was hopeful." "And hope is dangerous." Adrian felt something inside him shift permanently. "Did you let Moreno take the blame?" Victor didn't answer. Which was answer enough. Final Scene, Beach at Dawn Isabella stood alone as the first light of morning painted the horizon. Her father had finally told part of the truth. But not all of it. She sensed that. Footsteps approached. Adrian. He stopped beside her. "My father admitted involvement," he said. Her breath caught. "Mine admitted knowledge," she replied. They stared at the ocean together. "So it wasn't betrayal," she said softly. "No." "It was control." "Yes." The word felt heavier than before. They stood in silence. No hostility now. No rivalry. Just shared damage. "You know what this means," she said. "Yes." "If this becomes public," "It destroys both families." "And if it stays buried?" He looked at her. "It destroys us quietly." The sun broke over the water. Golden light spilling across dark waves. "I don't want to be collateral," she whispered. "You won't be." The promise slipped out before he could stop it. She looked at him. "Don't promise things you can't control." His gaze softened, just slightly. "For once," he said quietly, "I want to try." The distance between them felt thinner now. Not passion. Not yet. But something fragile. Something forming under pressure. And neither of them realized that Daniel Alvarez wasn't finished. Because hidden inside the flash drive was one more file. Encrypted. And addressed directly to Adrian.
