“Who is out there?” I yelled again, flashing my light in various directions, searching for anyone who could be lurking in the dark.
Of course I got no response. Instead, all I got was complete and absolute silence. I caught a weird unfamiliar scent which was quite strong but I was unable to recognize.
For a moment, I thought it was warriors from our pack.
“Maybe Raphael has eventually sent warriors to look for me.” I thought to myself.
“Did Jackson order them to bring me back?” I muttered to myself under my breath.
“Who is there?” I yelled again, trying to summon all the courage I had left.
Still, there was no response.
“Look, I don't know who you are or who sent you out here, but if you're trying to scare me, trust me when I say it's not working. The earlier you show yourself, the better it will be for all of us.”
Honestly, I don't know where the courage to say all those words came from, because boy was I scared? Hell yeah, I was terrified.
I then spoke further, “If Jackson asked you to bring me back, go back and tell him you didn't find me, because I'd rather die searching for Jake, than go back to that pack of his.”
Despite everything I said, I got no response. No sound. No movement at all.
I turned slowly, scanning the darkness all over again, but there was nothing, except just trees and shadows.
“Was it my imagination?” I thought to myself again. “I was so sure I saw something.”
I was about to continue on my search for a safe tree root to rest for the night when something moved in my peripheral vision. It was very fast. In fact, it was too fast to be identified. My heart got caught in my throat as I froze on the spot.
Then came another branch snap, this time to my left. Then another behind me. At that moment, I felt like I was being surrounded.
"I don't want any trouble," I called out, my voice shaking. "I'm just looking for my son. Please, if you know anything—"
Suddenly, a very unfamiliar figure stepped out from behind a tree. Then another. And another.
From the way they looked, I could tell that they were warriors. There were at least six of them, dressed in black, their faces covered.
“Well, well, well. Who do we have here?” One of them asked, his voice icy.
I stood transfixed, staring at them through the moon’s light which seemed like it got brighter. Through the moon's brightness, my eyes surprisingly caught sight of what seemed like their pack’s emblem embroidered on their black clothes, and I immediately knew they weren't from our Pack.
The emblem was totally different from what I had ever seen. It was a crescent moon piercing a star.
“Who are these?” I asked myself. “What have I gotten myself into?”
"Who are you? And what are you doing here at this time of the night?" Another one of them asked, snapping me out of my thoughts. It was another male voice, deeper than the first and unfamiliar.
“I… I was…” I stuttered, still shaken by what might become of me.
"You know what? There's no need to say anything. You're coming with us." The first warrior said sharply.
"No!" I backed away. "I need to find my son! Please, he's only five years old—"
"Your son isn't our concern." The warrior moved closer. "Alpha's orders. You're to be brought to our Pack."
"What!” I exclaimed, unable to believe my ears. “Your pack? Where is your pack? Who is your Alpha?” I protested. “I don't understand—"
"You don't need to understand. Just come quietly, and you won't be hurt." Another warrior chipped in immediately.
I shook my head in refusal, turned and took to my heels.
I didn't make it five steps before they caught me. Their strong hands grabbed my arms, lifting me off the ground.
"Let me go!" I screamed, kicking and thrashing. "JAKE! JAKE!"
One of the warriors clamped a hand over my mouth. "I said, come with us quietly. No one is going to help you here. You're all alone." He whispered scarily.
I bit down hard on his fingers. He cursed and backhanded me across the face. Pain exploded through my skull, and my vision went dark at the edges.
“Hey!” The first warrior yelled. “Do not lay a finger on her. Who ordered you to touch anyone?”
He sounded upset, and this left me confused.
“I'm sorry, boss. But she bit me. I reacted without thinking.” He quickly apologized, bowing his head, and I quickly understood that he probably was the first in command or maybe a leader of some sort.
“We think over here. If you can't think, then you aren't fit to be here.” The first warrior snapped at him again.
“I'm terribly sorry.” He apologized again, his head still bowed.
"I must say, she's a very feisty one," another warrior, who seemed like the leader’s right hand man, who had been silent all along, laughed. "I'm sure the Alpha is going to have fun breaking her."
“That's up to the Alpha. He can do whatever he pleases with them.” The leader replied, and that struck me.
“Them?” I thought to myself, looking around. “What does he mean by “them” when it's just me who is here?”
“We should go. Bind her, and cover that mouth of hers.” The leader ordered the others and led the way.
Just as instructed, they bound my hands with rope, loosely covered my mouth with a cloth, and began leading me through the forest. I struggled, but there were too many of them.
"Please," I sobbed when the cloth suddenly fell off my mouth. "Please, my son. I have to find my son."
"Forget about your son," the lead warrior said coldly. "You're a slave now. Slaves don't have children. They have masters."
"No. No, no, no—" I wept bitterly.
They gagged me with a cloth, tighter this time, finally silencing my protests and we continued walking.
We walked for hours, my feet leaving bloody footprints on the forest floor. Tears soaked the gag, but all I could think about was Jake's face, and his voice calling for me.
"Mama, where are you?" His little voice echoed through my heart, and my heart bled.
His father failed him. He chose Sophia and her daughter over his own son. His own blood. And now I had failed him too. I had tried to save him and failed woefully. What exactly was I good for? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
Finally, after what seemed like eternity, we emerged from the forest into a clearing. To my surprise, several vehicles waited there, with their engines running. I was shocked when I realized there were numerous other people in the vehicles. I didn't need a soothsayer to tell me that they had obviously also been taken as slaves too, just like me.
It was then I understood why the lead warrior said the Alpha can do whatever he pleases with “them”.
They shoved me into one of the vehicles, and I wept bitterly as we drove. The motion made me nauseous, or maybe that was the fear and despair churning in my stomach.
After many hours of what felt like an endless journey, the vehicles finally came to a halt right at the break of dawn. When we finally stopped, rough hands pulled me out into a massive compound. Buildings loomed around us, all bearing the same unfamiliar emblem that was embroidered on the clothes of the warriors— a crescent moon piercing a star.
Close to the main entrance, there was a gigantic signage which read, “Moon Dawn Pack territory.”
The whole place was different. It looked like a ghost town, with a very few people roaming around. Even the few people roaming around were extremely cautious. They moved like they were afraid of bumping into someone or scared of seeing someone.
I was still looking around at this strange new pack, which looked like it was going to be my new home, when someone shoved me from behind.
"Move," one of the other slaves shoved me, pushing me forward.
Apparently we were already being led to what they called the “slaves’ quarters”, but I was too carried away to hear anything that was being said.
I stumbled, barely able to walk. The warriors then led us to a large building in the center of the slaves quarters, and through corridors that smelled of cedar and something darker.
They removed my gag and threw me into a small room. I hit the floor hard, my bound hands unable to break my fall.
The door slammed shut, and the lock clicked. I lay there in the darkness, my body weak and broken, my heart shattered into pieces that were impossible to piece together.
Jake was still out there somewhere. And I was trapped here, in a different pack, with no power to help him.
"I'm sorry, baby," I whispered to the empty room, as I sobbed silently. "I'm so sorry."
Outside, I heard voices from other slaves as they were thrown into their various small rooms. Some cried, while others, who had probably accepted their fates, just remained unmoved by what was going on.
Barely had I taken a deep breath when I heard footsteps approaching. The sound was like something or someone being dragged against their will.
Then just as I thought, I heard a female voice yelling, “Let go of me! Leave me alone.”
As the footsteps kept getting louder, the whole place, which had been rowdy with noise from different rooms earlier, went quiet all of a sudden.
Then the door to my room opened, and before I knew what was going on, a small figure was aggressively pushed in, her unkept long red hair covering her face as she landed on the ground with a loud thud.
“Ahhhhh!!!!” I screamed.
