I flinched, realizing he was by my side. The strangest thing was that I had sniffed his scent before seeing him, which was weird. I froze still, waiting for what would happen. The others were nowhere to be seen.
He stared at me, observing like he was waiting for me to bow or something. Ethan rushed forward and stood in front of me, telling Mateo to back off with just his confident stance. Which was also a new thing for me. Ethan was a nerd, so where was that confidence coming from?
I didn't want to get him into trouble with the Alpha kids so I stepped in front of Ethan so Mateo could see my face. Finally, he advanced even closer and I lowered my gaze, fear of the unknown messing with my head. A fabric wrapped around my neck, sending shivers down my spines. I looked up to meet his gaze, and I had to stand at the tip of my toes just to do that.
"It's a bit cold, love." He said in his charismatic voice. A spark of electricity surged through my veins as I felt his touch brush lightly against my cheeks while he wrapped his muffler around my neck. Mateo smiled a lot so his dimples were the most visible. His brown hair was a mess, probably from making out with some girl--he had a lot of girlfriends.
"How's your leg? Still bleeding?"
His question came with a brief reminder that my leg still hurt. I cleared my throat. "Fine." The words came out of my lips as a mutter. I still would never be used to Mateo's kindness out of the others. It was weird because he treated me nicely out of pity, not sure because he liked me or anything. Still...
"Good." He nodded before turning to leave. Somehow, his absence held an effect on me, making me feel empty. Then I was warmed again by the earthly scent that smelled like him as I hugged on to the muffler. To be honest, Mateo was probably the tiny reason I still managed to endure all of the torment from the others. I liked him, but feared him too. That didn't make any sense.
"I hate him the most." Ethan grumbled. "He's a good pretender, only helping you in the shadows. He's worse than the others, you know?"
I bit my lower lips, wincing as the pain came back again. "Hey, you were limping earlier. Are you alright? Did they do this to you again??" Anger filled his eyes as he questioned. I couldn't help but imagine if this was Ethan growing up. He no longer wore his glasses now and had definitely added with that abs now visible as his tight shirt hugged his body. His long black hair is a man bun style now, blue eyes glaring at me with worry.
I blinked away the thoughts of Ethan getting attractive in my eyes. Oh moon goddess, how I wish Ethan could be my mate. I would never complain about anything in my life again! Ethan was likely not going to reject me...I think...
"Mabel. Where did you go just now?"
"I'm fine. Is it lunch period already? Please, I'm starving." My stomach grumbled as if to back up my statement.
"Come on," Ethan said as he walked me to the cafeteria. I used to sit alone before until Ethan became my friend after I helped him with a difficult assignment once. Now we sit together every day.
We were eating when he dropped the bombshell question. "Who are you bringing to prom tomorrow night?"
I heaved in a heavy sigh, "I knew you were always going to ask!"
His face lit up. "Duh? Of course I'm going to ask. We have to go, not together of course. I'm sorry, there's this really hot girl, Tara? I'd like to go with her."
I felt a stab of pain as I had just gotten rejected by Ethan! Apparently, even he was too cool for me. But I pretended I was alright. "It's fine. You crazy kids go have fun!"
Ethan looked at me with concern. "I'm sorry, I would have gone with you, but Tara asked me. And I think I like her!" Tara was indeed hot, and sweet too, even to me!
"It's fine, I understand. Really." I hoped I'd sounded convincing enough. "I'll be fine. Really, I'll enjoy the night alone without the intruding of you know who. Don't worry--"
A cold splash of water on my face cut me off and I gasped in shock. Raising my head up, I see a busty blonde lady in a skimpy skirt and short blouse with this hot temper in her eyes. Ashley Reinhard, Anna's best friend.
"Hey, watch it!" Ethan stood up, face glaring at Ashley but she only rolled her eyes. She was the second hottest girl in school after Anna.
"I will take another glass of water and splash it on her again if you don't mind your goddamn business." She warned. A couple of ladies were behind her, bunches of wannabes, all giggling and laughing. All I could think of was that Anna or any of the Alpha's shouldn't join this mess too, otherwise, I would be done for.
"Who the hell do you think you are, huh? I didn't believe it at first, but now I can see how much of a w***e you are, you shameless b***h!" She raged out, then reached for my neck and began to unwrap the muffler on me, strangling me in an attempt. I choked and gasped for air while some students laughed and recorded.
Ethan was held back by some dudes who were obviously some of Ashley's minions. "Hey, let go of her!"
Finally, she took the muffler off me, a smirk of victory residing on her face. I fell to the ground, gasping for air again. What was that for! My wolf, Niva, whimpered.
"Next time, you'll stay on your own, okay! I bought that muffler for Mateo and you seduced your way into taking it from him! If it wasn't for Anna who told me, I wouldn't have found out."
What? Anna told her...does this mean that Mateo gave me the stupid scarf on purpose to embarrass me??
Anna came out of nowhere. That b***h loved seeing me in pain all the time! I didn't even know how to feel now other than hatred and rage.
"Ha! She thinks she can seduce one of my brothers? How pathetic," her voice was loud as she mocked me. People laughed and called me all sorts of names like slut and w***e.
Just when Anna advanced closer, I could see the devilish rage in her eyes and she was ready to throw all her energy into hitting me till I would pass out! Then I heard Ethan's voice as he was looking towards the entrance. "Madam Rivera! I love your new hairstyle!" The woman peeped and saw the commotion. Then she advanced forward.
"s**t, let's get out of here." Anna mumbled. Then cold eyes stared at me. "We'll see at home, Mabel."
"Thank you, Ethan. Oh is anything the matter here?" Madam Rivera, the only nicest teacher in school said, eying the whole gang of Anna suspiciously. The boys holding Ethan had let go immediately.
Anna stepped forward with a smile on her face. "Oh it's nothing, ma'am. We were just talking about prom!"
I managed to get up on my feet, pretending I was okay. What good would it do anyway? The school would probably send me away and not lay a finger on Anna.
"Let's go, people." Anna flashed me a devilish grin then turned to leave. "Oh, will you be attending the prom night tomorrow??"
I frowned, feeling unmotivated to even reply her but I managed a head shake before mumbling out the word "no."
"Perfect. Later!" She stormed off and I couldn't help but imagine why she had asked me that, or the wicked grin she had made when she said we would see at home. I was in trouble again.
