Two: The Storm

767 Words
The soft glow of candlelight flickered around the dining table as Danny and Keith enjoyed their anniversary dinner, their laughter filling the room. Just as Danny took a bite of his favorite dish, his phone buzzed on the table, interrupting the moment. "Hold on, let me check this," he said, wiping his mouth and picking up his phone. Expecting a simple message or maybe a funny meme, he glanced at the screen, but his expression quickly changed from casual to shocked. “What is it?” Keith asked, sensing the sudden shift. Danny’s hands trembled as he reread the message, his heart racing. “It’s… it’s work. One of the buildings I manage has collapsed.” His voice was barely a whisper, the weight of the news sinking in. Keith’s face grew serious. “What? Are there casualties?” “I don’t know,” Danny replied, panic edging into his voice. “And to make it worse, the boat carrying the lifts for the project… it sank. They’re saying there may have been people on board.” Danny’s mind was reeling, the shock of the news hitting hard. He felt the implications—what it meant for the project, his team, and the lives at stake. He pushed back from the table, adrenaline surging through him. “Danny, wait—” Keith began, but Danny was already up. “I need to call my team,” he said urgently, his voice filled with worry. He hurried to the living room, his mind racing with fear and frustration. The peaceful evening they had planned seemed to evaporate into chaos. Keith followed, concern etched on his face. “Are you sure you want to deal with this now? Maybe you should—” “No!” Danny cut in, more sharply than he intended. “I can’t just sit here. I have to know what’s going on. I need to make sure everyone is safe.” He dialed his office, his fingers shaking as he waited for someone to answer. Each ring amplified his growing anxiety, every second stretching out. “Come on, come on,” he murmured, pacing the room. Finally, a voice picked up, and Danny felt a mix of relief and dread. “Danny! Thank God you called. We’re trying to get a handle on it, but it’s bad.” “What do you mean?” Danny asked, struggling to steady his voice. “The building… it was still under construction. We’re assessing the damage, but there were workers inside at the time. And as for the boat, we’re waiting for updates from the coast guard. It’s not looking good.” Danny felt his stomach drop. The weight of responsibility settled heavily on him. “Get me a list of everyone on-site. I need to know who was there and who might be missing.” “Right away,” came the reply. Danny hung up and leaned against the wall, the air feeling thick and heavy around him. He ran a hand through his hair, trying to gather his scattered thoughts. Keith stepped closer, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder. “Danny, we’ll get through this. You’re not alone.” But Danny felt anything but strong. “What if someone doesn’t make it? What if this is my fault?” “Don’t go there,” Keith said firmly. “You can’t think like that. Focus on what you can control right now.” Danny swallowed, taking a deep breath. “You’re right. I just… I didn’t expect this tonight.” Keith squeezed his shoulder, grounding him. “We’ll face this together. Just keep me in the loop, okay?” Danny nodded, grateful for Keith’s support. “Thanks, love. I’ll do my best to hold it together.” As he paced, the warmth of their earlier dinner felt like a distant memory. All that mattered now was the safety of his team and managing the aftermath of this unfolding crisis. The storm had hit, and Danny knew he would have to navigate turbulent waters ahead. Sleep was impossible, with fears of everything collapsing weighing heavily on him, and he began to wonder how he would handle the fallout. As months passed, Danny’s demeanor changed. He rarely came home as usual, and the affection and communication they once shared began to fade. Keith did his best to support him, but nothing seemed to help. Determined to find a way to bring things back together, Keith began to think of a thoughtful surprise, hoping it might help Danny feel grounded again despite the hardships he faced at work.
