Chapter Nine-Behind Closed Doors

639 Words
The estate was silent when Janet returned, the soft glow of lamps casting long shadows across the polished floors. The gala had been exhausting, every conversation a lesson, every glance an assessment. She closed the door behind her and leaned against it, exhaling deeply. For the first time in days, she allowed herself to feel the weight of everything — the engagement, the scrutiny, the expectations. A quiet sound behind her made her turn. Wesley was there, leaning against the doorway, his gray eyes softer in the dim light. He had shed the public poise he carried so effortlessly, revealing a version of himself that few had ever seen. “You’re awake,” he said quietly, almost a statement rather than a question. “I didn’t sleep much,” Janet admitted, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “It was… a lot tonight.” He stepped closer, hands in his pockets, studying her with a steady intensity. “I expected it would be. First appearances are never easy. Especially in a world like ours.” Janet looked down, unsure what to say. The tension between them, electric yet undefined, made her heart race. She had learned to read him in public, to navigate his presence, but here, in private, she felt vulnerable. Exposed. He came to stand beside her, close enough that she could feel the warmth radiating from him. “You handled yourself remarkably,” he said softly. “I wasn’t sure you would. But you did. You adapted.” Her breath caught. “I’m still learning… and I still feel completely out of place.” He smiled faintly, a rare and private expression. “That’s normal. No one walks into my world and feels at home immediately. Not even me sometimes.” Janet looked at him then, truly looked, noticing the subtle tension in his jaw, the quiet way his eyes softened when they weren’t assessing the room. For a fleeting moment, the billionaire stranger who had seemed untouchable appeared human. Real. “Why do you do this?” she asked softly. “Why push me so hard?” He studied her, his gaze unwavering. “Because you’re capable of more than you know. Because I don’t deal in hand-holding. And… because I like seeing the strength in you.” Her cheeks warmed at the unguarded honesty in his voice. She wanted to step back, to remind herself that this was all contractual, transactional, that attraction had no place here. But the pull was undeniable. For a moment, silence stretched between them. Then he spoke again, voice low and intimate. “Janet… the world doesn’t see what I see. They see a fiancée, a title, a position. But I see a woman who refuses to be broken, even when circumstances are stacked against her. That… is rare.” Janet’s heart thudded painfully in her chest. She wanted to speak, to respond, to challenge the vulnerability he had shown, but no words came. Instead, she simply nodded, feeling a strange mixture of admiration, fear, and curiosity. He finally straightened, regaining the composure he carried like armor. “Get some rest,” he said. “Tomorrow, the lessons continue. But for now…” His voice trailed, leaving the unspoken words hanging in the quiet of the estate. Janet watched him go, the door closing softly behind him. Alone, she sank into a chair, letting the tension of the evening and the weight of their encounter wash over her. She realized something startling: she was not only learning to navigate Wesley’s world — she was beginning to feel its pull, to feel his pull, in ways she had not expected. And for the first time, Janet wondered if this marriage, forced and unlikely as it seemed, might contain something beyond obligation — something dangerous, thrilling, and entirely unpredictable.
