CHAPTER 2:PLAYING WITH FIRE

1712 Words
The digital clock on Maya’s computer screen mocked her as the afternoon bled into evening. 5:00 PM came and went. Then 7:00 PM. By 9:30 PM, the executive floor had emptied out completely, leaving only the soft hum of the HVAC system and the erratic beating of Maya’s own heart. She stared at the short, cryptic message sitting in her private employee portal. *I’ll be waiting at eleven.* It was a trap. It had to be. A corporate cat playing with a mouse before snapping its jaws shut. But as she looked at her reflection in the darkened glass window, she realized the terrifying truth: she didn't want to run away. The sheer adrenaline of being *seen*…not as an invisible cog who brought coffee, but as a mind worth listening to…was a drug she hadn't realized she was starving for. At 10:45 PM, Maya kicked off her heels under her desk, replacing them with a pair of soft, flat loafers she kept for the late-night commute. She walked to the breakroom, poured a fresh cup of black coffee, and returned to her monitor. Her fingers hovered over the keyboard. If she was going to play this game, she wasn't going to back down now. To: V.C. Secure Server [Encrypted] Subject: Re: The Cage Mr. Sterling, If you want to reprogram the executive committee, you have to stop treating them like a uniform code block. They aren't all broken the same way. Take your Senior VP of Operations, Marcus Avery. He doesn't nod because he agrees with your logistics projections; he nods because he’s terrified you’ll look into the Q2 expense reports for the European sector. He’s hiding his department’s inefficiency behind your intimidation factor. As long as you’re throwing lightning bolts, nobody notices he hasn't updated the transit software in two years. If you want real data, stop asking them for presentations in the grand boardroom where everyone is performative. Ask them for the raw data sheets an hour before the meeting, without warning. Watch who panics. The ones who sweat are your liabilities. The ones who have the numbers ready are the ones actually keeping your ship afloat. And for the record? The floor plan isn't cluttered. It’s just populated by the people who actually do the heavy lifting while upper management takes three-hour lunches. …Anonymous. She hit *Send* at exactly 11:00 PM. She didn't even have time to lean back in her chair before the system chimed. A direct, instant reply. Her breath caught in her throat. From: V.C. Secure Server [Encrypted]* Subject: Liabilities Marcus Avery is sweating. I just requested the raw Q2 transit sheets for a midnight review. He claimed his database was undergoing a 'scheduled backup.' You are perceptive, Anonymous. And dangerously bold. But tell me, if the floor plan is populated by the people doing the heavy lifting, why are you still down there? An administrative assistant with an eye for corporate fraud and supply-chain logistics is either severely underutilized or hiding something. Which is it? Maya’s fingers tightened on the edge of her desk. The psychological heat of his words sent a shiver straight down her spine. He was analyzing her now, peeling back her layers just like she had done to his executives. To: V.C. Secure Server [Encrypted] Subject: Re: Liabilities Maybe I just like the view from the bottom. It's much easier to see who's slipping when you're looking up. Besides, Vanguard Holdings doesn't promote based on talent, Mr. Sterling. It promotes based on who possesses the right pedigree and who can afford the custom-tailored suits. A girl from the outskirts with a state university degree doesn't make it past the initial HR filtering algorithms for 'Executive Strategy.' So, I format calendars and fix the paper jams instead. There was a longer pause this time. Three minutes stretched into five. Maya found herself leaning closer to the monitor, her chest tightening with an addictive, desperate anticipation. From: V.C. Secure Server [Encrypted] Subject: Pedigree A pedigree guarantees a polished presentation, not a sharp mind. I have a boardroom full of Ivy League degrees, and yet a nameless midnight entity is the only one who has given me a viable strategic pivot in six months. I don't care about algorithms, and I certainly don't care about custom suits. I care about competence. What else do you see from the bottom, Anonymous? Tell me what else I’m missing. The shift in his tone was palpable. The cold, dictatorial CEO was gone, replaced by a man who sounded intensely curious, almost hungry for her input. The anonymity gave them both a lawless freedom. Under the cover of darkness and encrypted text, the rigid corporate hierarchy dissolved completely. For the next hour, the emails flew back and forth with a breathless, feverish velocity. They tore through corporate policy, dissected market trends, and debated expansion strategies. Maya didn't hold back. She slammed the company's archaic communication channels, and Vance countered with sharp, brilliant insights that showed exactly why he was a billionaire by thirty-two. But as the clock crawled toward midnight, the conversation took a subtle, dangerous turn. The corporate talk began to melt away, replaced by an underlying current of intense, personal awareness. From: V.C. Secure Server [Encrypted] Subject: Late Hours It is 12:15 AM. Why are you still in the building? The administrative shifts ended hours ago. Maya bit her lower lip, a sudden flush warming her cheeks. To: V.C. Secure Server [Encrypted] Subject: Re: Late Hours Someone has to compile the Q3 audit binders for the morning meeting. If they aren't perfect, the junior partners throw a tantrum. Why are you still up there? Surely a billionaire has someone to turn down his sheets. The reply came back in less than thirty seconds. From: V.C. Secure Server [Encrypted] Subject: Insomnia I don't sleep well. Too much noise in my head. But tonight, the noise is quiet. I'm too distracted by trying to place your voice. When I walked the floor today, I kept wondering which face belonged to these sharp, cutting words. I smelled jasmine near the administrative desks. Was that you, Anonymous? Maya’s heart leaped into her throat. She looked down at her wrists, where she had sprayed her favorite jasmine perfume that morning. He had noticed. Even surrounded by a dozen executives, his hyper-observant gaze had zeroed in on her space. The physical world was encroaching on their digital sanctuary, and the friction was intoxicating. To: V.C. Secure Server [Encrypted] Subject: Re: Insomnia You shouldn't look too hard, Mr. Sterling. The fantasy is always better than the reality. If you find out who I am, the game ends. You'll just see an assistant, and I'll just see a boss who can fire me with an email. *Let's keep the walls up. They protect us both.* A heavy silence followed. Maya waited, her breath shallow, wondering if she had pushed him too far. Suddenly, a low, mechanical whirring sound shattered the quiet of the empty floor. Maya gasped, dropping her phone onto the desk. The private, restricted elevator at the end of the executive corridor…the one that required a biometric scan and led directly to the penthouse…was descending. The digital display above the silver doors ticked down. Penthouse. Floor 40. Floor 39... He's coming down. Panic, raw and electric, flooded her system. Maya stood up so fast her chair rolled backward, colliding with the low cubicle wall. She looked at her monitor, then at the descending elevator. *Floor 35.* She couldn't let him find her like this…flushed, breathless, and completely exposed in the middle of the night. Maya grabbed her coat and her handbag, abandoning her flats under the desk, and sprinted toward the heavy fire escape doors at the back of the floor. She pushed through the heavy metal door just as a soft, melodic *chime* echoed through the corridor, signaling the arrival of the penthouse elevator. Through the tiny, reinforced glass window of the stairwell door, Maya peered back into the darkened office. The elevator doors slid open, throwing a column of warm light across the carpet. Vance Sterling stepped out. He had discarded his suit jacket and his tie. His white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing tanned, muscular skin dusted with dark hair. He looked devastatingly undone, completely stripped of his corporate armor. Vance walked slowly, his long strides purposeful as he navigated the maze of empty cubicles. He didn't look around randomly; his eyes were locked onto a single destination. He stopped right in front of Maya’s desk. Maya held her breath, her hand pressing hard against her chest to quiet the roaring of her heart. From the shadows of the stairwell, she watched him. Vance placed one large, powerful hand on the back of her office chair. He leaned down slightly, his grey eyes scanning her empty workspace. He saw the glowing monitor, the open employee portal, and then his gaze dropped to the floor. He reached down, his long fingers wrapping around the pair of nude heels she had left behind. He picked one up, turning the slender shoe over in his hand with a slow, deliberate intensity that made Maya’s thighs go completely soft. He knew she had just been there. The air was still warm. The faint, unmistakable scent of jasmine was thick in the empty cubicle. Vance looked toward the fire escape door. For a terrifying, breathless second, his stormy grey eyes locked directly onto the glass panel where Maya was hiding. She froze, paralyzed by the sheer power of his gaze, certain he could see her outline in the dark. A slow, dangerously handsome smile tugged at the corner of Vance’s lips…the first genuine smile she had ever seen on his face. He didn't chase her. Instead, he set her shoe down neatly on top of her desk, right next to the keyboard. He pulled his personal phone from his pocket. A second later, Maya’s phone buzzed violently in her hand, the vibration loud against her palm in the quiet stairwell. She looked down at the glowing screen. From: V.C. Secure Server [Encrypted] Subject: Caught You run fast, Anonymous. But you left your glass slippers behind. The walls are already cracking. See you tomorrow morning.
