That night, after the threat was completely erased and silence had returned to the estate, Alessandro sat in his large office—the room where he had once planned wars, signed death warrants, and ruled his dark kingdom with absolute power.
He sat behind the heavy oak desk, but he was not looking at the maps, the files, or the weapons that usually covered its surface. He was looking at me. I sat across from him, watching him closely, seeing the thoughts moving behind his grey eyes.
"You are very quiet," I said softly, breaking the gentle silence. "You handled everything perfectly today. You were terrifying… but you were also magnificent. They will never dare come near us again."
Alessandro smiled, but it was a thoughtful, heavy smile. He stood up and walked around the desk to me, pulling me up into his arms and holding me close, resting his chin on top of my head.
"It is done, yes. They are gone. The threat is ended. And now… I have a bigger decision to make."
He pulled back slightly, looking deep into my eyes, his expression serious and filled with a longing I understood perfectly.
"Bella… I built this empire over ten years ago. I built it out of pain, out of fear, out of the need to survive. I was young, broken, and alone. I thought that power was safety. I thought that being the strongest, the richest, the most feared… was the only way to ensure no one would ever hurt me again."
He gestured around the room, his tone turning almost disgusted.
"I killed men to get here. I made deals with devils. I walked through blood and darkness every single day. I became the monster everyone feared… because I thought it was better than being the victim."
He cupped my face in his hands, his thumbs brushing softly over my cheeks.
"And for years, I lived like that. Cold. Heartless. Empty. I told everyone I never loved, because I thought love was a trap that would get me killed. And I was right… for that man. For that life."
Alessandro took a deep breath, his grip on me tightening with determination.
"But that man is not me anymore. That life is not our life. You came, Bella, and you changed everything. You showed me that safety isn't found in guns or money or fear. You showed me that true safety is found in love. In having someone to hold. In having someone to come home to."
He looked around the room again, at the symbols of his power, his wealth, his dark history.
"This world… this underworld… it is a cage. A golden, dangerous cage. I am the King of it, yes… but I am still trapped inside. And I realized something today, when they threatened you, when I went to war just to keep you safe… I realized that I don't need this anymore. I don't want it."
My heart skipped a beat. I stared at him, shocked. "Alessandro… what are you saying?"
"I am saying… I want to leave it all behind."
The words were spoken softly, but they hit me like a thunderbolt.
"I want to step away. Completely. Forever. I want to hand over control to Marcus and the others—men I trust, men who will run it fairly, men who deserve the power more than I do now. I want to sell the territories, dissolve the alliances, close the dark operations… and walk away."
He looked at me with vulnerability in his eyes, the only person he ever showed this side to.
"I have enough wealth to last ten lifetimes. We never need for anything. But more than that… I have you. And you are the only wealth I care about. I want to live a life where I don't have to look over my shoulder. A life where I don't have to worry about enemies coming for us. A life where I am not the Don, not the Devil, not the man who never loved… but just a man. Your man."
He searched my face desperately.
"Is it enough? If I give up everything—my name, my title, my power—and I am just Alessandro… just a husband… is that enough for you?"
Tears pricked my eyes, happy and warm. I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him down to me, kissing him deeply before I spoke.
"Enough?" I whispered, my voice thick with emotion. "Alessandro, you gave up your heart for me. You gave up your coldness for me. You gave up everything you ever were just to be with me. Do you think I care about titles or power or money?"
I smiled through my tears, touching the scar on his cheek—the mark of his past.
"I fell in love with you when you were cruel. I fell in love with you when you were dangerous. I fell in love with you when you were nothing but a cold, heartless legend. I don't care if you are a King or a farmer or a poor man. As long as I wake up next to you… as long as I have your love… you are everything to me."
A look of pure, blinding relief broke across his face. It was like watching a heavy burden fall off his shoulders—a burden he had carried since he was a child. He let out a long breath, a sound of freedom, and hugged me so tight I could barely breathe, burying his face in my neck.
"Then it is done," he vowed, his voice strong and clear. "I will begin the process tomorrow. I will transfer everything. I will make sure no loose ends remain that could ever find us. And then… we leave."
He pulled back, smiling that bright, happy smile that belonged only to me.
"I bought land last month. Far away. Near the coast. A big house with gardens, and trees, and silence. No guards. No secrets. No fear. Just us."
He kissed my forehead, sealing the promise.
"I spent twenty-eight years being the man who never loved. I spent twenty-eight years being cold, dark, and alone. But now… I want to spend the rest of my life being the man who loves you more than anything. I want to spend every day proving to you, and to the whole world, that love is the only thing that matters."
He took my hand and led me out of the office, leaving the darkness and the power behind us, walking toward the light and the future.
"They were wrong about me, Bella," he said softly as we walked down the hall. "They said Alessandro Moretti never loved. And for a long time, they were right. But that was before I knew what love was. That was before I knew you."
He stopped and turned to me, looking at me with absolute devotion.
"Now… I love you enough to give up a kingdom. I love you enough to give up my past. I love you enough to start over, just for us."
He smiled, perfect and true.
"And I would do it all again. A thousand times over. Because the cold Mafia boss never loved… until you taught him how."
