'A monster' What she meant with that? "I don't understand" I told her. "You remember the old man we saved the other night?" I nodded. "What you saw in him, when I arrived?" I tried to remember until I 'saw' what she asked me. The entire image replaying in my mind. "He was afraid of you. He wanted you to stay away from him and told you he knew what you were" She nodded and start talking. "There's a reason why I prefer cloudy days and why you have only seen me at night...." Kay was walking from side to side while she tried to keep on going. "I'm sure you have already noticed my behavior when I'm around blood. My breath is uneven cause it's the first time I bear my thirst for so long being near a human...near you" she turned as she finished the sentence, giving me her back. "With that you may have an idea now. All you need to do is join the dots" "What...what are you..." "You're smart, Lauren. I know you have the answer, you just believe it's impossible to be real" > I kept quiet thinking and trying to realize all she had said to me, remembering her actions and attitude, anything that could help me know what she was... and then all the puzzle pieces fitted in its proper place. Memories flashing in my mind. The night she saved me she had growled after the man had cut my hand, she wouldn't get close to me when she followed me home... Her behavior when we saw blood on the waitress hand... The horrified face of the old man when seeing her...he could tell what she was cause he was old enough to know... "It can't be" was all I said. "I assure you, it can" Kay answered, looking back at me with a pained face. "So... you are telling me... you drink blood?" She stood there not moving, sigh down. I stopped thinking this was all a joke cause I knew it was true, everything fitted on that explanation, the way she defeated those three men at the alley, her acting...God even her pale skin and the words she used. "You're a vampire" I said, maybe more for myself than for her and maybe not fully realizing what that meant. "Now you know. That's the reason why I can't be 'near' you" I didn't care. The hope of her feeling the same way I do, was overwhelming for my mind. Rising up from my bed I got closer to her. Kay seemed to walk back, avoiding my contact, getting distance between us, but I ignore it and grabbed both of her arms. "You can't or won't?" "Lauren..." She lowered her face. "No, Kay. There's a difference between those two" "Lauren, I can't be with you..." her face reflected the pain she felt. "I'm a killer. If I ever hurt you I couldn't forgive myself" "But you won't Kay, you won't hurt me" I caressed her face loosing myself in her eyes. She tried to change my mind. "I...I've ended with many lives, I..." "I don't care" "I'm a killer, Lauren, a monster" "No you are not. You did that to survive. You. Are. Not. A. Monster. Nor. A. Killer. I love you as you are" I hugged her hiding my face in her collar bone. "If you feel the same way please tell me" She was shocked at physical contact first but ended answering to my embrace. "I told you before, I found no strength to be away from you. Lauren, I've loved you since the first time I saw you" With those words she made me the happiest girl if not in the entire world at least in the hole city. "Will you be with me?" Kay asked "Lauren, would you accept being my 'couple'?" I answered without a doubt, understanding she was asking me to be in a relationship whit her. "Yes, thousand times, yes" She hugged me again, holding me tighter and closer, giving me the widest smile I'd seen in her face. Then there was a knock on my door that dragged our attention to it. "Lauren, are you up?" That was my sister from the other side of the wood piece. "God it's late already. She won't like you being in here" I told Kay. "There's no trouble" She answered me with half smile. At one moment she was by mi side, at the next my balcony door was open and Kay was nowhere to be seen. I opened the door for my sister to come in. "Hey, Jess. I didn't hear you arrive. I was about to go to bed" "It's alright sis. It's been a long day I'll be hitting the sack soon too, but first I'll finish that delicious dinner I found at the kitchen. You did my favorite, thank you" "I'm glad you like it" "Well, I think I'll let you rest. Good night" "Night" I answered smiling as she closed the door behind her. As soon as my sister closed the door I heard a soft crack behind me. Kay was standing there as if she had never left, my balcony door still opened. "How you did that" "Well, I'm very fast" she chuckle. I smiled while seeing her, thin yet athletic, I'm sure she does exercise, a bit taller than me... Then I lay my sight over we eyes, still reddish. "Your eyes, they are..." "Oh...it's one of the things I hate" she says nodding a bit. "Kay, why are you trembling?" Now she straightens herself up, I can tell she hadn't noticed that. "When we... deprive ourselves from blood and several days pass by, we become weaker. Yes our crave for it is utterly strong but if we refrain the impulse, if we 'ignore' it ... a vampire can pretty much die from lack of energy" I nod, understanding her situation. A second later I'm worried. "Wait... Are you dying?" "Not yet I..." "How long it's been since you didn´t drink blood?" She thought about it. "Since the first time I saw you" "That's like a month ago" "I think so... Aye. Actually I'm going to..." "Feed yourself" I completed. She frowned a bit finding it strange that now I knew what she was gonna do. "Yeah" she nodded "I'll see you tomorrow ok?" "Ok" She was already at my balcony heading to it's edge when I grabbed her jacket by her wrist, making her turn. "I love you" I said, hugging her by half of her torso, hiding my face at her collarbone. I feel her arms covering me by my shoulders and back, holding me closer. "I love you more" She whispered near my ear before kissing my forehead. Before jumping over my balcony she gave me one of her half smiles that I started to love. Then she disappeared in the night.
