Chapter 5

It's 2:30 in the afternoon and even though it's weekend my sister is working again. That's a good thing cause she has a good economic remuneration for both of us but it's been a wile since she hadn't had so much work as now a days. If she's able to rests and have some time for herself then I've no trouble with it. I just hope her bosses don't push her too far, she looks tired already. I was reading my favorite book, 'Sense and sensibility' by Jane Austen, when a knock over my balcony's door distracted me. She was there waiting for me. I couldn't believe she had climbed all the way up to my window-door and I ever notice. Leaving the bookmark over my last read page I stand up to let her in. "How did you get up here?" She gave me half smile as an answer. "Someone could see you, you know?" "But no one did" she smiles wider. Now that I knew her secret I could tell she wasn't 'hiding', she wasn't nervous or insecure anymore. "If we are going to do this" she says "I think it's better if I let you know my story" The way she mention it sound important. "Sure, yeah" "And you can ask me anything" "Ok" I told her "I'll ask if I miss something" She nodded before sitting on my chair over the desk. I did the same thing by sitting on my bed. Remember what I said a moment ago about her not being nervous anymore? Forget I ever mention it cause right now she seems nervous. Not having much of an idea of what to say. "I tend some nights to go out and try to save people from imminent accidents..." She makes a pause looking at me "but I think you already knew that" I smile a bit. "Well, when I saw you helped the man I started to think something like that but now I know you do it with certain frequency. Do you have a family?" I suddenly asked. "No. I mean I'm sure I had one but I never met them, any way I'm very sure they died long time ago. What about you, do you have any relatives apart from your sister?" I denied with my head. "No, our parents died a couple of years ago and we have no grandparents so Jess is all the family i've got" "I'm sorry" she said with an apologetic look in her eyes. "It's fine, I don't think in it as much as I used to. You ever knew your parents, this means you have no last name at all?" "No, I do have two of them actually. One I've told it was my fathers, apparently someone did knew him at the house where we the orphans stayed, the other was given to me by a lady who found me outside a church's door. They said I was paler due to the snowed streets. She said I was 'Albion' or white as the cliffs of Dover. So that gave me an identity being known as 'Albelion Thorel' I picked the name Kay after an old woman at the market claimed I had the face of one, even though the name was very strange for the time" " I think she hit the nail on it. I couldn't imagine you with another one" we both laughed, her head nodding in response. "Aye, she probably did" "So, you lived at an orphans house?" "Yeah I did, but now I don't remember the name. The place was horrible any way" "And, what's 'Dover'?" "Oh that's a place at the southern shores of England" "Were you born there?" "No, well, I don't know where I was born but they found me at the outsides of London. I couldn't point the place now a days. But before we move to another subject, I don't know your given name" "Oh it's Mitchell.. Wells" "Lauren Mitchell Wells" she repeated "It's a nice name" "Thanks, yours it's pretty interesting also" "Thank you" > "How old are you? When's your birthday?" She asked. "I'm 17. My birthday is on October 12th. When is yours? How old are you?" I answered and give her another question. She chuckled before answering. "I don't always remember to celebrate it. It's on January 7. I'm older than you. I'm 19..." "Well you're only a bit older than me" she paused after hearing my comment. "Er...I AM older...than just that. You'll see, I am 19 years old but ... I've lived more. I was born in 1775" I never saw that coming. "1775?!! Wow, that's...that's... amazing, I mean... It's...awesome. So you can live forever?" "Kind of. I can live forever as long as I feed myself, but that's if nothing physically bad happens to me" "How's that?" "Well I may be fast and strong but anyone can kill or hurt me..." Something inside me felt uneasy when she said that. I didn't even want to have that thought. "I bleed just like every other human, as well as I can get ill, not every sickness hits me nor does every injury would kill me but I'm not indestructible" I didn't wanted to keep on with that subject. "You should add your liking and resistance to low temperatures" I interrupted. "True, I should add that" For a moment my mind went somewhere else, trying to realize all of this. I was in love with a vampire, not any vampire, a girl, the girl who saved my life and makes me feel like ever before... "You really ever thought I'll be that 'old', did you?" She was looking right to my eyes now, looking for any clue of what I may be thinking. I smiled and got up to hug her getting lost in her eyes while I did so. "I ever thought I'd fall in love with someone who is two hundred and thirty nine years old" She smiles, as I laugh too. "But I love you anyway" We decided to go out, walk at a park or near the river. I took my jacket before leaving my room and hold her hand with my free one. We arrived to the park in very short time. "Why you came here, to North America?" "I always wanted to come. When I was a child and the independence war had started a few years before, I remember I used to say I'd join the redcoats to keep the colons under his Majesty's orders, I changed my mind later as I understood their situation and swore I'll be the only redcoat helping them, but by then, war had ended a year ago. I arrived a couple of years before now and I settled first near San Francisco I then changed for Oregon, I don't really know why, but I'm glad I did" Kay smiled looking at me. "Do you miss England?" Her eyes lighted up for a second whilst her sight was over the orizon. "Every day, every morning. There's no day I don't think about it, it's the land I love. I hope you'll see it someday"she says smiling at the idea. "Maybe I will" Even though she transmitted the emotions of her home with so vivid expressions I couldn't imagine it. All I could do was stare at her. Her black smooth hair lightly moved by the wind, her pale soft skin and those green piercing eyes that leave me at no time. All that made me wonder how could I deserve Kay. She looked perfect, now at daylight everyone could notice it, everyone admires her and I can't stop thinking how it is that I'm the lucky one who she chooses to be with. Her voice dragged me out of my thoughts. "Lauren, are you fine?" I now realize that we're not in the park anymore but by the river's shore. Still, people around us look at her with desire. "Yeah, I'm fine I just... there's too much people at this side of the city" She smirks noticing all the stares towards us. I'm against the fence edge and when Kay tries to come closer I bump with it. "I was wondering..." She started, whispering close to my ear. "if it's used that couples still carry each other?" I smiled at her idea. "What are you thinking?" She gave me her back and half dodged in front of me, I jumped over her back without hesitation letting her carry me. I laughed out loud as I haven't done in lot of time and when seeing her she gave me half a smile. All the previous stares at us banished as if she had showed them she choose me among everyone by making that simple move. We started to walk, or she started to do so, better said. But my curiosity keep on wondering things about her. "Why don't you come out at daylight?" She tries to turn and see my face but our position doesn't allows her to. I'm sure she frowned in confusion. "But, it's daylight, isn't it?" "Sure" I answered " but I mean, out in a sunny day" "We must not be caught by sunlight. We'll burn if we stay out under it for very long. It doesn't kill us but it's definitely painful. A vampire burned by sunlight would keep those scars for as long as he/she lives... I thought every human knew that, it's even written down on books, i think" I thought about it. "I think it's on one of those books but they are just novels for everyone. I don't think someone may pay attention to them ad believe they are actually real. For instance, I don't think much people knows or believe in vampire's existence" "Touché. What would you say if we head back to you house? It's getting late and even though I want to spend as much time I can by your side, I think your sister may be worried if she arrives and founds you not there" I nodded knowing our way back wasn't very short so I could be more time with her. I thought about my sister, to whom I hadn't left not even a note saying where or with whom I was going. After we passed some blocks ahead I asked Kay to let me walk. Don't get me wrong I loved the way she carried me but I prefer seeing her face and lost myself in her eyes. I saw her suppress a small yawn. " Are you tired?" "A bit. I don't sleep much, ever did actually" "What? Vampires need to sleep?" " Of course. It's what most of us do at day. I'm sure the perfect excuse for it are hangovers and it's pretty convenient for the ones who love human nocturne life. We vampires are very fun of alcoholic beverages, specially wine" "I've thought of the wine thing but never about the sleep thing" "Don't worry, there are still lots of things you may don't know, yet, now I think you know more than average people" I smiled at her comment. I felt the cold breeze starting to wander through the streets, I grabbed Kay's arm and leaned my head against her shoulder while we walked, breathing in the cold fresh air. I could feel she did the same a moment later when I heard her deep breath with my ear near her heart. Everything was perfect, until she held that breath by it's half and stopped sharping her senses, inspecting our surroundings with her sight. "Kay? What is it?" "Shhh, wait" she whispered looking everywhere. I had a glimpse of her face and it was alert, the way a deer would be when a hunter is near. Her body muscles tensed in an instant. "We may have a trouble"
