She continued inspecting our surroundings, looking in every direction.
"What do you mean by 'trouble'?" She shushed me again, before looking straight into a nearby street. Whispering a name to herself, I couldn´t pick it.
"It can't be..." she said.
I heard steps coming from the street towards us, Kay's figure stood before me, protecting me from whatever may come from the alley. I tried to look forward and see who was approaching but I saw nothing, all I could do was hear the steps. A voice called my attention. It sounded cold, unhuman.
"Well, well, look who's here, Albion Thorel. I started to think I wouldn't find you"
Before my sight appeared a man dressed with a blue thin long coat, black trousers and brown boots. His skin was pale just like Kay's. His eyes were of an electric blue, giving me the feeling that they could see trough my soul, making a strange match for his blond, almost white, hair.
Kay answered clenching her teeth.
"I ever thought you would live for so long. The report said you were drown two months after I left the army. I imagined you would live for a while, after all, you are a survivor, but you where dead for everyone. What is it that you're doing here, Marcus? When did you became a vampire?"
The man was angry, disgusted for her comment.
"I think you can figure that out very well, Albion, you were good for messing around where no one called you. I'm here in name of our beloved captain, James Dull Howard. he sends a message"
"What message?" Kay asked as a second shadow started to approach from behind Marcus. It was the most terrifying living thing I've ever seen.
It's body was human, so was it's walking way, but seeing it´s face it had a senseless, animalistic expression I´ve seen. Kay immediately locked her entire attention to it. Marcus seemed to findmy horrified expression funny...
"He says he knows where you are, now you've given him what he wants the most, the Brown Village is now his, so will the capital be. His battalions would be ready to march. The White Horse will burn. 'Now I know your weakness' were his words, I think.
This is your gift, enjoy it while you can"
He ended with a smile, turning back while the animalistic human rushed rushed against us. I backed away.
He threw a punch to Kay's face, she stopped it holding his arm before it touched her face. The guy drew his left arm to catch her but Kay tooked him by his right shoulder and ducked under his arm, holding and twisting it behind. I heard a horrible scream before the guy freed himself from her grip and garbed Kay by her neck in an attempt to choke her. Their moves where fast, still they seemed as part of a never ending dance, every movement was elegant, not loosing it's speed, some of them I could't catch with my eye.
At one moment Kay was against the floor with the guy over her, the next she had his face slammed against the wall... but Kay never seem to held him for too long. I saw him dig his knee against her stomach before pushing her away, taking air out of her lungs. She stood there lying on the floor. The guy approached and kicked her again on the stomach, pain was drawn over her face and I couldn't suppress a scream before begging the guy to stop. doing it was a mistake, but everything I could think about was Kay's safety. She was the strongest person I knew and I loved her, I couldn't stay there and do nothing.
The animalistic creature turned to face me, my body chilled in response. It growled at me licking his lips while holding my gaze. I feared then, I feared for my own life. When the guy rushed towards me and Kay urged me to run, I couldn't move, I couldn't remember how to do the most basic thing and try to secure myself.
I saw Kay behind, trying to get up, but the guy reached me first holding my neck, his cold grip closing around it. I gasped for air as he growled and neeared his fangs to my face.
"No!" Kay screamed and rushed towards us with an expression I have never seen in her face. She grabed the guy and took him off me, I coughed and turned to see what was happening, but everything seemed surreal. The guy was struggling to get Kay off of him still behaving like an animal. She held him against the wall and he scratched her arm with nails as big as claws. She hissed in pain before reaching for his neck and bit down his flesh. The guy cried out desperately trying to get free.
I couldn't believe what my eyes were seeing. Instead of loosening her jaw she bit down and spat what seemed flesh and blood.
My stomach twisted unpleasantly as I started to see double, tasting bile in my mouth. Hugging my I kneeled down trying to calm myself, trying to ignore everything that was happening around me.
I'm not sure when but Kay called my name, her voice flinched uneasy. I didn't answered, I was shocked for everything. I saw her some steps away form me, half curled against the wall non wanting to get closer. I tried to look for any injuries on her.
She called my name again this time worried.
"Are you all right?" She asked.
"Yes. Are you ok?" She didn't answered, neither did she turned back to face me.
"Kay?"
"Aye, I'm ok" I got up and walked towards her.
"What's wrong?" she was still curled against the wall.
She turned carefully, her mouth was stained with blood. She denied clenching her jaw, fighting, I assume, with her thirst. Even though I couldn't know if she could drank from another vampire, I ignored her action and kneeled beside her.
In a fast move she got us up, grabbing my shoulders, hissing as she opened her fangs searching for my neck. She managed to stop in last second, stepping back wiht her fists tighly closed.
"I can't do this..." I wasn't sure if she talked to me or herself, or what she was refereeing to. Still I tried to distract her...
"It's all right, we're ok. It's not a crime to defend yourself "
" I killed him..." her sight was lost "...I could have-" she hushed looking at me with horrified eyes. I didn't need an explanation to know what she was thinking.
"You didn't, Kay" I grabbed her face between my hands and got closer to her "You see? I'm ok"
She was looking at me but her mind was somewhere else. I hugged her and after a while she responded to it.
We walk back to my place while I hold hands. Her face is impassive.her hand shaked from time to time. When we reach the usual corner near my house she's a bit distant with me. I don't blame her, after all, she's worried about me. I just wished she could relax and stop being too harsh on herself. I wanted to distract her.
I get closed and reach for her blue jacket's hood taking it off her head, tangling my fingers between her black hair while caressing it and then brushing her jaw. I lean towards her and she tryes to back away but I dont´t let her move, I plant a kiss on her lips. A moment later she answers it, first slowly then with much more passion. She setles her right hand over my neck and the other one at my hip. We only stop when lack of air is too much. Our sight is lost in one anothers.
"Please, stay. Don't go tonight. Go up through my balcony, I'll be there soon" I gave her a quick kiss before entering my house and she reluctantly walked to climb the tree in front of my window.
As soon as I cross the main door my sister asks me where I have been.
"You could have told me where you were going. Who was that outside?" I'm sure she saw Kay but I don't know what she saw.
"I...that's. I was just saying goodbye"
Jess got closer to me and saw the marks on my neck from the earlier attack.
"Did he did this to you? What happened?..."
"No, Jess, I can explain... The person out there is a friend who helped me...saved me twice now"
I was careful not to mention any pronoun. I didn't want to lie to Jess but I didn't know how to tell her I was in love with a girl, not to mention she's already my girlfriend and a vampire.
"Thank God you had help. You need to be more careful, this kind of incidents are getting frequent for you. Are you ok?" She asked eyeing me from head to toe.
"Yes, don't worry. I'm ok"
I ran upstairs as soon as I can to find Kay in my room, she was standing next to my bookshelf looking at some of my fossils.
"This ammonite was not here last time I was..." She said signaling the small fossil. "When did you bought it?"
"It was a gift from my sister. She knew I was looking for one and bought it to me" nodding she walked away from the shelf and took seat on my bed.
We stay in silence for a while before I went to change for my bed clothes.
"Why did you wanted me to stay?" she asked. I patted by my side and we both leaned on my bed.
"Cause I can see yoy suffer with your own thoughts when you findd no distraction" she turned to look at me.
"That much you can see in me?"
I nodded and gave her a smile before resting my head against her flat abdomen. A moment later I feel her arm around my back.
I fall asleep at some point but i'm awaken when feeling her move under my head.
,I open my eyes, findding Kay half raised. Her eyes open as if she has seen a ghost. I assume she awaked a moment before I did.
"What is it?" I ask, but receive no answer. I know she listened so I wait for her to say something.
"I must go" she says. Immediately I try to change her mind.
"Why? It's 3 o'clock in the morning..."
She gave me a look that hushed me, not because she was being mean but cause I could see there was something bothering her.
"When I was 17, I dressed up as a lad and joined His Majesty's army. No one ever caught me until I left. But when five months passed I was assigned to serve in one of our ships. The captain's name was James Dull Howard, it's admiral was Marcus Brown. I served under their command for a year and some months. At the beginning we had no argue, that changed months after. A sailor got drown during a storm, and for days, Marcus and the captain blamed me for it. After the trial´s verdic,t they couldn't do anything to make me 'pay'. The entire battalion knew they were being unreasonable and exaggerated. A couple of days latter they transferred me to Rye. I heard Marcus had drowned and that captain Howard was dismissed from the army"
She looked back at me.
"I can't stay, Lauren. If what Marcus says is true and Howard knows where I am... then me being anywhere near you would be dangerous for you"
