Chapter 5: Moving Into His World

550 Words
Maya stood outside Nathaniel Cole’s mansion with her suitcase beside her, completely speechless. The place looked less like a home and more like something out of a billionaire magazine — massive glass windows, elegant fountains, expensive cars lined neatly outside. Everything about it screamed power. And somehow, it made her feel even smaller. “You’re staring.” Maya turned sharply to find Nathaniel stepping out of a black car, adjusting the cuffs of his suit like owning a mansion this ridiculous was completely normal. “I’m judging,” she corrected. A faint smirk touched his lips. “That too.” She rolled her eyes immediately. A maid quickly approached and collected Maya’s suitcase before she could protest. “Your room is ready, Mrs. Cole,” the woman said politely. Maya almost choked. Mrs. Cole. The title sounded painfully unfamiliar. Nathaniel noticed the look on her face. “You’ll have to get used to it.” “Don’t push your luck.” He simply walked past her toward the entrance, clearly expecting her to follow. Unfortunately… she did. The inside of the mansion was even worse. Marble floors. Crystal lights. A staircase so large it belonged in a movie. Maya suddenly became very aware of her simple clothes and worn sneakers. Nathaniel noticed her silence. “You don’t like it?” “It’s too big.” “That’s your complaint?” “It feels cold.” For a brief second, something unreadable crossed his face. Then it disappeared. “You’ll adjust.” A young woman suddenly appeared from another hallway. She was beautiful, elegant, and dressed perfectly from head to toe. But the moment her eyes landed on Maya, her smile disappeared. “Nathaniel,” she said slowly, “who is this?” Maya immediately noticed the familiarity in her tone. Dangerously familiar. Nathaniel remained calm. “This is Maya.” The woman looked confused for exactly two seconds before realization hit her expression. Her eyes widened slightly. “You got married?” Married. Hearing it out loud still felt unreal. The woman forced a smile, though it clearly looked strained. “I’m Vanessa.” Maya gave a small nod. “Nice to meet you.” But it definitely didn’t feel nice. Vanessa turned back to Nathaniel. “You never mentioned this.” “It wasn’t your concern.” The coldness in his voice surprised Maya. Vanessa looked hurt… but also angry. Interesting. Very interesting. “I should go,” Vanessa said quietly, grabbing her purse. Before leaving, her eyes briefly met Maya’s again. And in that moment, Maya understood one thing clearly. Vanessa still had feelings for Nathaniel. The front door closed behind her. Silence filled the room. Maya slowly turned toward Nathaniel with narrowed eyes. “Ex-girlfriend?” Nathaniel loosened his tie calmly. “Something like that.” Something like that? Men were unbelievable. “You could’ve warned me.” “You handled it well.” She crossed her arms. “I always handle things well.” Nathaniel stepped slightly closer, his dark eyes locked onto hers again. “I’m beginning to notice.” Her heartbeat betrayed her instantly. Annoyed, Maya quickly looked away. This man was dangerous in ways she didn’t fully understand yet. And moving into his world? Might have been the biggest mistake of her life.
