The silence after Nathaniel’s confession didn’t last long.
Not even ten minutes.
His phone vibrated sharply against the desk.
Once.
Twice.
Then again—persistent, urgent.
Nathaniel stared at the screen. His expression changed in a way Maya had never seen before—subtle tension tightening his jaw, eyes sharpening like something had just shifted out of his control.
“What is it?” Maya asked cautiously.
He didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he unlocked the phone.
A single message sat at the top.
> COLE ENTERPRISES BOARD — EMERGENCY REVIEW INITIATED
Maya noticed his grip tighten.
“That’s not normal, is it?” she asked.
Nathaniel exhaled slowly. “No.”
Another message popped up.
> “We require immediate confirmation regarding the status of your contractual marriage arrangement. Non-compliance will trigger enforcement review under Clause 7B.”
Maya felt her stomach drop.
“They’re talking about us,” she said quietly.
Nathaniel didn’t respond. He was already moving—walking to the window, looking outside like he expected someone to be there.
“They’ve accelerated it,” he muttered.
“What does that mean?” Maya stepped closer.
His voice was low. “It means they suspect something has changed between us.”
Maya’s chest tightened. “Because of the document.”
“Because of everything,” he corrected.
Another notification came in.
This time, not a message.
A video call request.
From: BOARD EXECUTIVE OVERSIGHT
Nathaniel didn’t accept it immediately.
He just stared at it.
Then, finally—
He answered.
The screen lit up.
Three faces appeared, cold and composed. Expensive suits. No emotion. No warmth.
The kind of people who didn’t ask questions—they issued consequences.
One of them leaned forward slightly.
“Mr Cole,” the man said. “We assume you’ve reviewed the compliance alert.”
Nathaniel’s voice was controlled. “I have.”
A pause.
Then the man’s gaze shifted slightly.
“And Ms Collins is present, we see.”
Maya froze. “They can see me?”
Nathaniel didn’t look at her. “Yes.”
Her blood ran cold.
The second board member spoke now, a woman this time—calm, precise.
“Ms Collins, we trust your involvement in this arrangement has remained consistent with its original intent.”
Maya swallowed. “Original intent?”
Nathaniel stepped slightly in front of her without thinking—subtle, protective.
The woman’s eyes narrowed slightly.
“Mr Cole,” she continued, ignoring Maya, “there are concerns regarding deviation from contractual parameters.”
Nathaniel’s jaw tightened. “There is no deviation.”
A beat.
Then the first man smiled faintly.
“That is not what the system indicators suggest.”
Maya glanced at Nathaniel. “System indicators?”
He didn’t answer.
The man continued.
“Your location data shows increased cohabitation outside required minimum interaction thresholds. Emotional proximity metrics have also risen.”
Maya’s breath caught. “You’re tracking emotions?”
The woman didn’t blink. “We track compliance.”
Silence fell like a weight.
Then the first man’s tone changed—colder.
“Let us be clear, Mr Cole. This arrangement was structured to secure your leadership eligibility. If emotional entanglement compromises your judgment, we will intervene.”
Nathaniel’s voice dropped slightly. “Intervene how?”
A pause.
Then the woman answered.
“By reassigning your position. And nullifying the contract marriage arrangement.”
Maya’s heart stopped.
Nathaniel’s expression didn’t change—but his eyes did.
Because that meant her role… her presence… her entire existence in this arrangement—
Could be erased.
Just like that.
The first man leaned back.
“You have forty-eight hours to demonstrate full compliance.”
The screen began to dim.
Before the call ended, the woman added one final line:
“And Mr Cole… do not forget why this arrangement was approved in the first place.”
The call cut.
Silence exploded back into the room.
Maya stared at the blank screen.
Her voice came out barely above a whisper.
“They don’t see me as a person… do they?”
Nathaniel didn’t answer immediately.
When he did, his voice was quiet.
“No.”
A beat.
“Not in this arrangement.”
Maya turned to him slowly. “Then what am I, Nathaniel?”
He looked at her then—really looked at her again.
And this time, there was no hiding left.
“Evidence,” he said.
The word shattered the room.
