Chapter 6: Lines That Shouldn't Be Crossed

631 Words
Maya couldn’t sleep. The room Nathaniel had given her was too quiet, too perfect, too… unfamiliar. Everything smelled expensive. Everything looked untouched. It didn’t feel like a place people lived in — it felt like a place people survived in. She sat up in bed, frustrated, pushing her hair back. “I hate this,” she muttered to herself. A soft knock suddenly broke the silence. Maya froze. Another knock. Slower this time. She grabbed the edge of her blanket tightly. “Who is it?” “It’s Nathaniel.” Of course it was. She hesitated before getting off the bed and opening the door just slightly. Nathaniel stood in the dim hallway, sleeves rolled up, looking far too calm for someone visiting a woman’s bedroom at night. “What do you want?” she asked suspiciously. “Your door was locked.” “And?” “I don’t like locked doors in my house.” Maya blinked. “Excuse me?” Nathaniel looked at her evenly. “It’s a security rule.” “This feels more like control than security.” His gaze sharpened slightly. “There’s a difference.” She crossed her arms tighter. “At least pretend this is normal.” A faint exhale left him — almost like frustration, but controlled. “I need you to understand something,” he said quietly. Maya didn’t respond. She just watched him carefully. “This house has rules. Some of them are for your safety.” “I didn’t ask for safety,” she snapped. “I asked for freedom.” That word hung between them. Freedom. Nathaniel’s expression shifted slightly — something unreadable passing through his eyes. “You gave that up when you signed the contract,” he said finally. Maya felt her chest tighten. “Don’t remind me.” A long silence followed. The air between them felt heavier than before. Then Nathaniel spoke again, softer this time. “You should sleep.” “I will when I feel like it.” A faint hint of amusement returned to his face. “You’re difficult.” “And you’re controlling.” A pause. Neither of them looked away. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Nathaniel stepped slightly closer. Not enough to touch her. But enough that Maya could feel his presence clearly. “Vanessa will be around the house often,” he said suddenly. The name instantly reminded her of earlier. Maya frowned. “Why are you telling me this?” “Because I don’t want misunderstandings.” She almost laughed. “Misunderstandings? You’re literally married to me.” His jaw tightened slightly. “She’s part of my past,” he said calmly. “Nothing more.” Something about the way he said it felt… incomplete. But Maya didn’t push further. Instead, she leaned against the doorframe. “Just make sure your ‘past’ knows her place.” That made him pause. A real pause. Then, unexpectedly— A faint smirk appeared on his lips. “You’re jealous.” Maya immediately straightened. “What? No!” “Your tone says otherwise.” “I don’t care who you talk to.” “Of course.” His calm confidence was infuriating. Maya pointed at him. “This conversation is over.” Nathaniel didn’t move. Instead, his voice dropped slightly. “Lock your door if it makes you feel safer.” Maya hesitated. That wasn’t what she expected him to say. Before she could respond, he turned away and walked down the hallway, disappearing into the dim light. Maya stood there for a moment, heart still unsettled. Then she quietly closed the door. But even in silence… She couldn’t ignore the strange thought forming in her mind. Nathaniel Cole wasn’t just dangerous. He was starting to feel… personal.
