I blinked awake, my eyes struggling to adjust to the light and make sense of where I was.
My body felt heavy, drained, as if something important had been taken out of me.
I felt a warm hand around mine. I turned my head slowly and saw Aiden slumped over the side of the bed, his head resting on the mattress, my hand trapped in his. I stirred, and his eyes fluttered open.
"You're awake," he breathed, relief softening his face as he sat up. A small smile tugged at his lips. "Thank God."
"The baby?" I asked.
The smile vanished, and his grip tightened. "You lost it."
My hand twitched faintly in his. I pressed my lips together, swallowing the scream clawing up my throat. The emptiness had been there, but I was expecting another answer.
