Chapter 18

It was time for the ceremony, hundreds and hundreds of people stood in the ballroom, chatting amongst themselves as the cloaked people in black finished their last preparations in the middle of the ballroom before Yukino, yes, Yukino was to go up and be the first to take her ‘test’. Yukino was dressed in a simple yet elegant ice blue kimono that greatly contrasted her red eyes, bringing them out as the only ‘warm’ color that she had ‘on’. Although the kimono looked simple enough, it was actually made of some of the rarest material in this world. Arachne’s silk was a material that wouldn’t and couldn’t be destroyed, not in the meaning that it was the invincible armor, but each rip, each tear would close itself, making it the perfect material for the ‘transforming’ clans such as the Fox Clan because it allowed the wearer to transform, letting all the material ‘rip’ and thus ‘disappear’ so someone wouldn’t see a bird flying around with a dress. However, when they go back to their human form, the material will once again become clothes even if the wearer had travelled thousands of miles.  On her neck dangled Kami, in the form of a crystal necklace. Currently, Yukino and Kami were having a very serious discussion. “So you’re telling me that what’s going to happen today was the reason the previous Yukino hated Sakura so much?” [Yep!] Kami replied, popping the ‘p’. Yukino gave a sigh, running her fingers through her long silver hair. “Yuki, you’ll be fine.” Taiyo saw the movements from Yukino and thought that she was nervous because she would be the first to go up. Yukino, was in fact nervous. Giving a strained smile to her brother she nodded her head, in return, Taiyo patted her head softly. “Okay, Kami, spill.” Yukino said in her mind. [Well, Yukino got a 98, the highest in the past centuries, so she felt super proud of herself… that is until Sakura, as the heroine, got a 100. Yukino became super jealous because all the attention she had gotten within that hour was stolen, she felt that it was unfair and her jealousy continued to grow in school.] “Will I get a 100 cause you know, I’m reincarnated?” [I don’t know.] “What?” [I'm not sure if having a different soul changes your magical capabilities.] “Oh. That’s kinda depressing…” Kami didn’t reply and Yukino started playing with her fingers as the butterflies in her stomach decided to go crazy.  The sounds of footsteps made Yukino look up, seeing her mother and father, along with her mother’s side of the family she smiled. “Yukino! You’re as beautiful as always, sorry I haven’t said hi before but you seemed pretty tired!” Kaito’s mother came and gave Yukino a big hug. Her fire-red hair seemed to blaze in the soft lights of the Fox Palace. Yukino returned the hug as she greeted her. She nodded to Kaito and his sisters. Kaito was taking his test today as well, having skipped it last year due to him refusing to attend, he definitely has changed from the empty boy to a boy brimming with energy and confidence. He gave off a warm, yet blinding aura that made people look at him and unable to look away. The skinny boy was no longer there. Kaito walked up to Yukino and gave her a pat on the back, “You’ll do fine, don’t be so nervous.” Yukino blinked at him, c*****g her head. Kaito smiled, “Your body is so tense and there’s a strain smile on your face, and to plainly put it, you look like you’re about to walk to your death.” Yukino let out a small smile but before she could say something, her name was called, “Yukino Kimura, please come forward!” Everyone glanced towards the thrones where the royal fox family along with the royal phoenix family were.  Yukino stood there, her stage fright coming in at full force, frozen as she felt every single eye on her. She felt a little nudge for both Kaito and her brother, Taiyo, causing her to start walking. Each step felt heavier than the last as she walked towards the thousands of hooded people. [Don't be so dramatic, you’re not going to be executed…] Kami’s voice rung in her head but Yukino continued to move forward as if she didn’t hear it. After what felt like an eternity, Yukino arrived at the center of the magic circle drawn into the ground of the palace hall. The hooded men circled around her and started chanting and something hot started to flow through Yukino. She started to as a pain, so unfamiliar to her struck, it was as if her bones were reshaping itself. She continued to scream until she felt nothing. Opening her eyes she found herself in a black space. [You were screaming like crazy, so I brought your soul into my space, you won’t be able to feel the pain here.] “Oh thank god. Why was that so painful?” [The higher the score the more painful it will be, and you also had your first transformation, so of course it’ll hurt. But don’t worry! The next time you transform it won’t hurt at all!] Yukino sighed in relief. “Yukino Kimura, please come forward!” Everyone had looked over to see the girl in an icy blue dress talking with a boy with flaming red hair, instantly knowing that he was from the Phoenix Clan. The fox princess had looked up when her name was called and stared dazed at the crowd. With a nudge from her brother who also stood besides her she started walking down the parted crowd. Each step she took was graceful and silent, clearly she was trained well. The silver hair flowed behind her, and as she passed a cool breeze seemed to have followed. Once arriving at the circle the men started their spell, almost instantly she started to glow silver, levitating into the air. In seconds a scream was ripped from her throat, causing many to flinch but soon she fell silent. The silver tail and ears disappeared as her human form was revealed, not too different from before since only her tail and ears were gone, next though she turned into her fox form. In a beautiful white light, pure and blinding, the fox that stood there had its eyes closed. Light blue swirls that turned blood-red were etched into the glowing white fur and on her forehead was a icy blue trident like symbol, the emblem of the fox clan.  The dim room continued to be lit with the bright aura of the princess, and as she returned to her half fox and half human form, the light dimmed. Opening her eyes Yukino’s originally red eyes had turned to a crystal blue. Eyelashes lowered, she looked like a divine being ascending into the mortal world. Until she fell onto the floor with a very ungrateful thud. “Ouch!” She cried as she rubbed her back, Taiyo was there in seconds and helped her up. “That was painful,” she muttered as she flopped onto her brother while Taiyo could only smile helplessly. “Ninety.. ninety-eight!” The cloaked men stuttered out the number unable to believe their own eyes. Everyone sharply turned to the circle, beholding the golden 98 at the center of the magic circle. Taiyo smiled widely as he led the exhausted Yukino to her seat. There, Yukino laid for the rest of the ceremony, sleeping, even when an uproar happened with Sakura’s 100.
