A Coffee-Stained Confession

1502 Words
The next morning, Emma walked into Brewed Awakenings feeling a strange mix of excitement and unease. Lunch with Theo had left her buzzing with unanswered questions, and though she had hoped they would address the growing tension between them, they hadn’t. Instead, the weight of their unspoken words hung over her like a cloud she couldn’t shake off. She didn’t have much time to dwell on it, though, because as soon as she entered the café, Lila pounced. “So…” Lila began, sidling up to her with a mischievous grin. “How was lunch with Mr. Tall, Dark, and Brooding?” Emma sighed, hanging up her jacket. “It was fine.” Lila raised an eyebrow. “Fine? Come on, Emma. You can’t just drop that and expect me to be satisfied. Spill.” “There’s nothing to spill,” Emma insisted, though her voice lacked conviction. “We talked. We ate. It wasn’t a big deal.” Lila wasn’t buying it. “Not a big deal? Please. He asked you out to lunch. That’s a huge deal.” Emma rubbed her temples, already feeling the tension building again. “It wasn’t a date, Lila.” “Wasn’t it?” Lila asked, her voice sing-song and teasing. “Maybe you’re just blind to the obvious chemistry.” Emma opened her mouth to respond, but the sound of the door opening made her turn. And, of course, there he was—Theo, walking in with his usual calm, composed demeanor. But there was something different about him today, something that made Emma’s pulse quicken. Theo spotted her immediately, his eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that sent a shiver down her spine. He gave her a small nod before making his way over to his usual spot in the corner, setting his laptop down and opening it without a word. Lila raised her eyebrows, watching the silent exchange between them with far too much interest. “Uh-huh. Sure. Nothing’s going on at all.” Emma ignored her, busying herself behind the counter. She needed to focus on work, not on whatever was—or wasn’t—happening with Theo. But it was easier said than done. Every time she glanced in his direction, she found herself wondering what he was thinking, whether he felt the same tension she did. After a few more customers came and went, Emma finally decided to take a short break. She grabbed a cup of coffee—this time for herself—and made her way over to Theo’s table. “Mind if I sit?” she asked, trying to keep her tone casual. Theo glanced up from his laptop, his eyes flickering with something Emma couldn’t quite read. “Not at all.” She sat down, cradling her coffee cup in her hands, feeling the warmth seep into her skin as she tried to find the right words. “About yesterday…” she began hesitantly. Theo looked up from his laptop, his brow furrowing slightly. “What about it?” Emma swallowed, her heart racing. This was it—the moment she’d been avoiding, but also the one she knew couldn’t be put off any longer. “I just… I don’t know what that was. Was it… I mean, were we just hanging out, or was it something more?” Theo’s eyes held hers for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Emma felt her pulse quicken under his gaze, the weight of the unspoken words hanging in the air between them. “I thought we were just having lunch,” Theo finally said, his voice low, careful. Emma felt a strange pang of disappointment, but she forced a smile. “Right. Of course. Just lunch.” Theo’s gaze didn’t waver, and for a moment, she thought she saw something flicker in his eyes—something that contradicted his words. But then, just as quickly, it was gone, and he looked back down at his laptop, the conversation seemingly over. Emma sat there for a moment, her mind racing. She had expected him to say something—anything that would give her a clue about where they stood. But instead, he’d given her nothing. And now she was left with more questions than ever. Before she could dwell on it any longer, the door to the café swung open, and a woman walked in. Emma glanced up, and her heart sank. The woman was beautiful—tall, elegant, with long dark hair and sharp green eyes that seemed to take in everything around her in an instant. She was dressed impeccably in a sleek coat, her confidence radiating off her in waves. But what really caught Emma’s attention was the way Theo reacted. He stiffened the moment he saw her, his eyes widening in surprise—no, not just surprise, but something deeper. Something that looked almost like… fear. The woman spotted Theo immediately and smiled, though the smile didn’t quite reach her eyes. She walked over to his table with a purposeful stride, stopping just in front of him. “Theo,” she said, her voice smooth but edged with something sharp. “It’s been a while.” Theo stood up slowly, his entire demeanor changing. Gone was the calm, collected Theo Emma had come to know. In his place was someone… different. Someone who seemed tense, guarded. “Alice,” he said, his voice cold. “What are you doing here?” The woman—Alice—smiled again, though there was something almost predatory about it. “I was in town for a meeting. Thought I’d drop by and say hello.” Emma watched the exchange, her stomach churning with unease. Whoever this woman was, she clearly had history with Theo. And from the looks of it, that history wasn’t a pleasant one. Theo didn’t respond right away, his jaw clenched as he stared at Alice. There was tension between them, thick and heavy, and Emma felt like she was intruding on something deeply personal. “I don’t have time for this,” Theo finally said, his voice low and dangerous. Alice raised an eyebrow, unfazed by his coldness. “Come on, Theo. We both know you’re not that busy.” Emma felt a knot tighten in her chest as she watched them, her mind racing. Who was this woman? And why was Theo reacting this way? Before she could think of an excuse to leave, Alice’s gaze shifted to her, and Emma felt a chill run down her spine. “And who’s this?” Alice asked, her tone dripping with curiosity. “A new friend?” Theo’s expression darkened, and for a moment, Emma thought he might snap at her. But instead, he simply said, “This is Emma. She works here.” Alice’s eyes flicked between them, a knowing smile playing on her lips. “Ah, I see.” Emma opened her mouth to say something—anything to break the tension—but before she could, Alice turned back to Theo. “We need to talk,” she said, her voice sharp now, all traces of fake pleasantries gone. Theo’s jaw tightened, and Emma could see the muscles in his neck tense. “Not here.” Alice glanced around the café, her eyes landing on Emma for a brief moment before she nodded. “Fine. Let’s go.” Without another word, Theo grabbed his laptop and followed Alice out of the café, leaving Emma sitting there, stunned and confused. She watched as they walked out the door, disappearing into the street. The knot in her chest tightened as she tried to make sense of what had just happened. Who was Alice? And why had Theo looked so… shaken? Her thoughts raced, a thousand questions flooding her mind, but one stood out above the rest: Had she just witnessed the ghost of Theo’s past? The rest of the day passed in a blur. Emma tried to focus on her work, but her mind kept drifting back to the scene with Theo and Alice. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something important had just shifted—something that could change everything. When her shift finally ended, Emma left the café feeling more unsettled than ever. She hadn’t seen Theo since he’d left with Alice, and the thought of him out there, dealing with whatever ghosts this woman had dredged up, made her stomach churn with worry. She wasn’t sure why she cared so much. Theo had made it clear that their relationship was casual—just friends, if that. But despite his insistence, Emma couldn’t deny the growing connection between them. And now, with Alice’s sudden appearance, that connection felt fragile—like it could break at any moment. As she walked home, Emma tried to push the thoughts away, telling herself that whatever was going on with Theo wasn’t her business. But deep down, she knew that was a lie. It was her business—whether she liked it or not.
