The days after Emma’s conversation with Theo were some of the hardest she had experienced in a long time. The absence of their usual connection left a hollow feeling in her chest, one that no amount of work or distraction could fill. But she had made her decision—to step away, to give herself space to figure out whether she could truly trust him—and she was determined to stick to it, no matter how much it hurt.
The café felt different without Theo’s presence. Every time the bell above the door rang, Emma would glance up, her heart skipping a beat, half-hoping and half-fearing that it would be him. But it never was. He hadn’t come by since their conversation, and Emma wondered if that was his way of respecting her need for space. Or maybe… maybe it was something else.
“Still nothing from Mr. Brooding?” Lila asked one afternoon, sliding onto the barstool next to Emma at the counter.
Emma shook her head, trying to hide the disappointment that twisted in her stomach. “Nope. I asked for space, so… that’s what I’m getting.”
Lila studied her carefully, her brow furrowed. “You don’t seem too happy about it.”
“I’m not,” Emma admitted with a sigh. “But I need to figure out if I can really trust him, you know? After everything he told me… it’s hard. He’s still tied to Alice in ways I don’t understand, and I don’t want to get hurt.”
Lila nodded thoughtfully, her expression softening. “I get that. But do you really think he’s still in love with her?”
Emma chewed on her bottom lip, uncertain. “He says he’s not. He says it’s just guilt… but I don’t know. It’s hard to tell where guilt ends and feelings begin. And if there’s even a chance that he might still care for her in that way, I can’t get in the middle of it.”
Lila reached out and squeezed Emma’s arm gently. “You’ve always been good at protecting your heart, Em. But maybe this time… maybe it’s worth taking a risk.”
Emma felt a pang of uncertainty at Lila’s words. It was true—she had always been cautious when it came to matters of the heart. She’d been hurt before, and she wasn’t eager to repeat that experience. But with Theo, things felt different. Their connection, though complicated, was real. And yet, the shadows of his past, especially with Alice, made everything feel so fragile.
“I just don’t know if I’m ready for that risk,” Emma said quietly, staring down at her hands.
Before Lila could respond, the café door opened, and Emma instinctively glanced up. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw Alice walking in, her heels clicking sharply against the tiled floor. The sight of her made Emma’s stomach churn with anxiety, but she straightened her posture, refusing to let Alice see her discomfort.
Lila, sensing the shift in the air, stood up. “I’ll cover the counter. You want to take a break?”
Emma hesitated for a moment, then nodded. “Yeah. Thanks, Lila.”
She stepped out from behind the counter and made her way to the back of the café, heading out through the rear exit and into the small alleyway behind the building. The cool air hit her face, a welcome relief from the tension that had been building inside her since Alice entered. She leaned against the brick wall, taking slow, deep breaths to calm her nerves.
She had barely been outside for five minutes when the door creaked open behind her, and she turned to see Alice standing there, her eyes sharp and calculating as they landed on Emma.
“We need to talk,” Alice said, her voice cool but commanding.
Emma’s heart pounded in her chest, but she squared her shoulders, refusing to be intimidated. “About what?”
Alice stepped closer, crossing her arms over her chest. “About Theo.”
Emma’s stomach twisted with unease. She had been dreading this conversation ever since Theo had told her about his complicated past with Alice, but she hadn’t expected it to come so soon—or so directly.
“I’m not sure what there is to talk about,” Emma said, trying to keep her voice steady. “Theo and I… we’re not together.”
Alice’s lips curled into a knowing smile, though it didn’t reach her eyes. “You’re not, but that doesn’t mean you don’t want to be.”
Emma’s throat tightened, but she didn’t deny it. There was no point. Alice could see right through her, and denying her feelings for Theo wouldn’t change anything.
“I’m not here to fight with you, Emma,” Alice said, her voice softening slightly. “But I think you deserve to know the truth about Theo. About what he’s really like.”
Emma’s pulse quickened, and she felt a knot of dread settle in her chest. “What do you mean?”
Alice leaned against the wall, her gaze piercing. “Theo has always been good at hiding things. He’s charming, yes, but he’s also manipulative. He knows how to make you feel like you’re the only person in the world, like he’s letting you in… but the truth is, you never really know him.”
Emma’s hands tightened into fists at her sides. She didn’t want to believe Alice, didn’t want to let her words get under her skin. But the doubt she had been feeling ever since Theo had told her about his past was already there, and Alice was feeding into it.
“I know you care about him,” Alice continued, her tone almost sympathetic. “I did too. But he will hurt you, Emma. It’s inevitable. He’ll always be tied to the past—tied to me.”
Emma felt her heart pounding in her chest, her mind racing with confusion. She wanted to defend Theo, to tell Alice that she didn’t understand—that Theo had changed. But deep down, Emma wasn’t sure if she believed that anymore.
“I don’t know what you expect me to do,” Emma said, her voice quieter now. “I’m already giving him space. I’m already questioning everything.”
Alice’s smile returned, but it was colder this time. “I just want you to be aware of who he really is, Emma. Don’t make the same mistakes I did. Don’t let him pull you in and break your heart.”
Emma swallowed hard, her chest tightening with the weight of Alice’s words. She hated that they made sense, hated that she couldn’t simply brush them off. Was Alice telling the truth? Was Theo really incapable of leaving the past behind? Was he still tied to Alice in ways that Emma would never fully understand?
“I’m not going to get in the way,” Alice said, pushing off the wall and straightening her posture. “If you choose to stay in his life, that’s up to you. But don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
With that, Alice turned and walked back into the café, leaving Emma standing there, her thoughts spinning out of control. The truth was, Alice had already gotten in the way—whether she meant to or not. Emma’s doubts had been growing ever since she learned about Theo’s past, and now, Alice had planted seeds of uncertainty that Emma wasn’t sure she could ignore.
As Emma stood there, staring at the closed door, she realized something that sent a chill down her spine: she didn’t know if she could ever fully trust Theo. And without trust, where did that leave them?
