The following morning, Emma couldn’t shake the tension that had settled deep in her chest after her conversation with Alice. Her mind replayed every word Alice had said, each one stirring the doubts that had already been lurking in her thoughts.
Could Theo really be trusted? Or was Alice right? Was Emma just setting herself up to be hurt?
She arrived at Brewed Awakenings earlier than usual, hoping that keeping busy would help silence her thoughts. But as she worked, her hands felt heavy, like every action required extra effort. Even Lila noticed her distraction, shooting her concerned glances as the morning rush died down.
“Hey,” Lila said, sliding into the seat at the counter opposite Emma. “You’ve been off all morning. What’s going on?”
Emma wiped her hands on a towel, taking a deep breath as she glanced out the café window. “Alice came by yesterday. She… she said some things about Theo.”
Lila frowned. “What did she say?”
Emma swallowed hard, the weight of Alice’s words still hanging over her like a dark cloud. “She basically told me that I’ll never really know Theo. That he’s manipulative, that he makes you feel like you’re the only one, but he’ll hurt me. Just like he hurt her.”
Lila’s expression darkened, her eyes narrowing. “And do you believe her?”
“I don’t know,” Emma admitted, her voice shaking with the frustration and uncertainty that had been building inside her for days. “I want to believe Theo’s different now, but… he’s never fully opened up to me. There’s so much about him that I don’t understand, and the more I think about it, the more I wonder if I’m just fooling myself.”
Lila leaned forward, her gaze serious. “Emma, listen. I don’t know Theo the way you do, but I do know one thing: you can’t let someone else dictate how you feel. Alice has her own agenda—maybe she’s telling the truth, maybe she’s not—but you need to decide for yourself who Theo is. Not who she says he is.”
Emma sighed, rubbing her temples as she tried to process it all. “That’s the problem. I don’t even know who Theo is anymore. I feel like I’ve been chasing after this idea of him, but after everything he told me, I just… I don’t know if I can trust him.”
Lila nodded thoughtfully, her expression softening. “I get it. Trust is everything. But you also can’t ignore how you feel. You care about him, right?”
Emma bit her lip, nodding slowly. “I do. But caring about someone isn’t enough if I can’t trust them.”
“True,” Lila agreed. “But you’ve also gotta give him the chance to earn that trust. Maybe he’s been closed off because of his past with Alice, but that doesn’t mean he can’t change. The question is… are you willing to stick around long enough to see if he does?”
Emma’s heart clenched at the thought. She wanted to believe that Theo was capable of change, that he could break free from the guilt and pain that had held him back for so long. But she wasn’t sure if she could bear the possibility of being wrong—of investing her heart in someone who might still be tied to his past.
Before she could respond, the café door opened, and Emma instinctively glanced up.
It was Theo.
Her heart immediately began to race, her chest tightening with a mixture of emotions she couldn’t quite untangle. He hadn’t come by since their last conversation, and now, seeing him again brought all her doubts and feelings rushing to the surface.
Theo’s eyes locked on hers as he walked toward the counter, his expression unreadable. Emma stood frozen, her heart pounding as he stopped just in front of her.
“Can we talk?” Theo asked, his voice quiet but steady.
Emma swallowed hard, glancing at Lila, who gave her a subtle nod of encouragement before slipping away to tend to a customer. She turned back to Theo, unsure of what to say.
“Sure,” she finally replied, her voice barely above a whisper.
Theo gestured toward one of the small tables near the back of the café, and Emma followed him, her heart heavy with anticipation. They sat across from each other, the tension between them palpable. For a long moment, neither of them spoke.
“I know I said I’d give you space,” Theo began, his voice rough, “but I couldn’t stop thinking about what we talked about. I don’t want to lose you, Emma.”
Emma’s chest tightened, and she struggled to find the right words. “Theo… I don’t want to lose you either. But I’m scared. I don’t know if I can trust you, not after everything you told me.”
Theo’s jaw tightened, and he nodded slowly, his eyes filled with regret. “I understand. I haven’t given you a lot of reasons to trust me. And I wish I could go back and undo everything that happened with Alice, but I can’t.”
Emma felt a lump forming in her throat, her emotions bubbling to the surface. “It’s not just about Alice. It’s about the fact that I don’t even know if you’re being honest with me now. You’ve kept so much from me, and I don’t know if I can handle that.”
Theo’s gaze softened, his eyes filled with something like pain. “I know. And I don’t blame you for feeling that way. I haven’t been fair to you. But I swear, Emma… I care about you. More than I’ve cared about anyone in a long time.”
Emma’s heart raced at his words. She looked down, trying to process everything. But then, without thinking, she blurted, “Then show me. If you mean it, show me now.”
Theo looked taken aback, his eyebrows raising slightly. “Show you?”
“Yes,” Emma said, feeling a wild impulse rise in her. “Let’s do something. Anything. A date. Something fun.”
Theo blinked in surprise, but then a small smile tugged at his lips. “A date?”
“Yeah. A real date. No sitting around talking about Alice. No heavy stuff. Let’s just… forget all of it for a little while. I want to see if I can feel that trust again. I want to feel like it’s just us.”
Theo’s smile grew, and for a moment, the tension between them seemed to lift. “Okay. Let’s go right now.”
“Right now?” Emma asked, her heart skipping a beat.
“Right now,” Theo said, standing up and extending his hand. “No more waiting, no more doubt. Let’s just go.”
Emma hesitated for a moment, but then, feeling a burst of adrenaline, she took his hand. They left the café together, stepping into the bright morning sunlight. Theo led her down the street, not saying where they were going, and for the first time in days, Emma felt the weight on her chest begin to ease.
They ended up at a local carnival that had just opened for the season. The moment they walked through the entrance, Emma couldn’t help but laugh at the suddenness of it all—the bright lights, the smell of popcorn and cotton candy, the joyful screams from the rides. It was such a stark contrast to the heavy conversations they’d been having.
“Here?” Emma asked, raising an eyebrow.
Theo grinned, a mischievous glint in his eyes. “Why not? Let’s have some fun.”
They spent the next couple of hours riding every possible ride, playing carnival games, and indulging in way too much junk food. It was the first time in a long time that Emma felt herself letting go—laughing freely, not thinking about the past or what was waiting for them. She could see the change in Theo too. He seemed lighter, more relaxed, like the guilt that usually hung around him had lifted, even if just for a little while.
At one point, they found themselves at the top of the Ferris wheel, the view of the city stretching out before them. The night was quiet, with only the soft hum of the carnival below. Theo looked at her, and for a moment, the playfulness from earlier faded, replaced by something deeper, more intense.
“Emma…” he started, but she cut him off, shaking her head.
“No heavy stuff,” she whispered, leaning her head against his shoulder. “Not right now.”
Theo smiled softly, placing a gentle kiss on her temple. “Not right now.”
They stayed like that for the rest of the ride, and as they descended, Emma realized something that made her heart pound in her chest. She was willing to risk it. Risk everything for him. She had doubts, yes. But this—this feeling of warmth, of connection, of trust being rebuilt—it was worth taking the chance.
As they stepped off the Ferris wheel, Emma glanced at Theo, her heart swelling with affection and confusion all at once. “You know what? Maybe I’m crazy… but I’m willing to risk it all for you.”
Theo’s eyes widened slightly, and he pulled her into a kiss, soft and sweet. When he pulled back, his eyes were full of warmth. “You won’t regret it, Emma. I promise.”
Emma wasn’t sure what the future held, and the doubts weren’t completely gone. But for now, in this moment, she felt something she hadn’t felt in days: hope.
