The days following Emma’s conversation with Theo were strangely quiet, yet emotionally turbulent. Though their talk had brought some clarity, Emma couldn’t ignore the lingering uncertainty about where they stood. She had resolved to give Theo the space he needed, but deep down, she couldn’t shake the fear that Alice’s presence could unravel everything between them.
Theo continued to come to the café, but their interactions were minimal—brief smiles, polite conversations about nothing in particular. It was as if they were walking on eggshells around each other, neither one willing to fully address the growing tension that hung in the air. And though Emma tried to focus on her work, every time she glanced at Theo, her heart clenched with a mixture of longing and frustration.
On Wednesday morning, Emma arrived at Brewed Awakenings determined to push aside her feelings and focus on the day ahead. But just as she was settling into her shift, something unexpected happened.
The door to the café swung open, and in walked Alice.
Emma’s heart immediately dropped into her stomach as she watched the woman stride in, exuding the same air of confidence she had the first time Emma had seen her. Alice scanned the café, her sharp green eyes landing on Emma with a look that sent a chill down her spine.
For a brief moment, Emma considered retreating into the back of the café, hiding from the storm that she sensed was about to hit. But before she could make a move, Alice approached the counter, her heels clicking against the tiled floor with an authority that made Emma’s pulse quicken.
“Hi,” Alice said, her voice smooth and professional. “You’re Emma, right?”
Emma swallowed, forcing herself to stay composed. “Yes. Can I help you?”
Alice’s smile didn’t reach her eyes. “Actually, I think I can help you.”
Emma blinked, caught off guard by the comment. “Excuse me?”
“I think it’s time we had a little chat,” Alice said, her tone laced with condescension. “About Theo.”
Emma felt her heart race at the mention of his name. She hadn’t expected this—hadn’t expected Alice to seek her out, let alone want to have a conversation about Theo. But now that the moment had arrived, Emma felt a strange mix of fear and determination surge through her.
“Okay,” Emma said, her voice steady despite the pounding in her chest. “What about him?”
Alice’s smile widened, though it was far from friendly. “I’ve noticed that you and Theo have been… spending quite a bit of time together. And while I’m sure you think you’re being helpful, I feel it’s my duty to remind you that you don’t really know him.”
Emma’s stomach twisted at the implication behind Alice’s words, but she kept her expression neutral. “I think Theo’s capable of deciding who he spends his time with.”
Alice’s eyes darkened, and her smile faltered. “You don’t understand, do you? Theo and I—we have history. A lot of it. And you… you’re just the latest distraction.”
The words hit Emma like a punch to the gut, but she refused to let Alice see how much they hurt. She straightened her spine, meeting Alice’s gaze head-on. “Theo made it pretty clear that his past with you is just that—in the past.”
Alice let out a short, humorless laugh, shaking her head. “You’re so naïve. Do you really think someone like Theo can just walk away from everything we had? You don’t know him like I do. You don’t know the real Theo.”
Emma felt anger rising in her chest, but she forced herself to stay calm. She wasn’t going to let Alice rattle her, no matter how hard she tried. “Maybe not. But the Theo I know is a good person—someone who’s trying to move forward, not live in the past.”
Alice’s expression hardened, and for a moment, she looked like she might snap. But instead, she took a deep breath, regaining her composure. “You think you’re helping him, but you’re just making things more complicated. Theo doesn’t need someone like you in his life.”
The venom in her words stung, but Emma refused to back down. “Maybe that’s not your decision to make.”
Alice’s eyes narrowed, and for a long moment, the two women stared at each other, the tension between them thick and heavy. Emma could feel her heart racing, but she refused to be intimidated. She knew Alice was trying to get under her skin, to plant doubt in her mind about Theo. But Emma wasn’t going to let her win.
Finally, Alice’s smile returned, though it was colder than before. “We’ll see how long you last, Emma. Theo has a way of pushing people away—especially when things get difficult. But I’m sure you’ll figure that out eventually.”
With that, Alice turned on her heel and walked out of the café, leaving Emma standing behind the counter, her hands trembling slightly as she tried to process what had just happened.
Lila appeared at her side a moment later, her eyes wide with shock. “What the hell was that?”
Emma shook her head, still reeling from the confrontation. “I don’t know. But whatever it was, it wasn’t good.”
Lila frowned, her expression full of concern. “Are you okay?”
“I… I think so,” Emma said, though she wasn’t entirely sure if that was true. Her mind was racing, trying to make sense of Alice’s words—of the way she had spoken about Theo, like he was someone Emma didn’t really know.
“She’s just trying to mess with you,” Lila said, her voice firm. “Don’t let her get in your head.”
Emma nodded, but the doubt had already started to creep in. What if Alice was right? What if she didn’t really know Theo as well as she thought she did? What if there were things about his past—about him—that he was keeping hidden from her?
As the hours passed and Emma finished her shift, the conversation with Alice continued to haunt her. She tried to brush it off, to remind herself that Theo had made it clear that his relationship with Alice was over. But the words kept circling in her mind, gnawing at her like a splinter she couldn’t ignore.
By the time she got home, Emma’s emotions were a tangled mess of confusion, anger, and doubt. She wanted to talk to Theo, to ask him directly about what Alice had said. But at the same time, she was scared—scared of what she might learn, scared of what Theo might say.
After pacing her apartment for what felt like hours, Emma finally grabbed her phone and typed out a message to Theo.
Emma: Hey. Can we talk? It’s important.
She hesitated for a moment before hitting send, her heart racing as she waited for his reply. Minutes passed, each one feeling like an eternity, until finally, her phone buzzed with a response.
Theo: Yeah. Meet me at the café tomorrow morning before work?
Emma let out a shaky breath, her stomach twisting with nerves. She wasn’t sure what she was going to say, but she knew she couldn’t keep this inside any longer.
Whatever happened next, she needed answers.
