The aroma of freshly brewed coffee hung in the air as Emma Reid stood behind the counter of Brewed Awakenings, carefully placing a chocolate croissant on a plate. She was only two weeks into her new job, and despite the early mornings, she loved it—the smells, the conversations, and the constant stream of interesting faces.
The only downside? Her natural clumsiness seemed to have found a new playground in this coffee shop. And the chaotic juggling of plates and cups had already landed her in a few embarrassing situations. But today, she promised herself it would be different. Today, she’d get through the morning without spilling a single thing.
"Large black coffee, no sugar," the voice snapped her back to reality. It was deep and slightly impatient.
Emma looked up to see Theo Harrison—the regular with the perfect jawline and permanently brooding expression. He always came in at the same time, always ordered the same thing, and always left without so much as a smile. The other baristas had warned her about him: "Theo, the writer. Serious type. Doesn’t say much, but tips well."
Emma quickly poured the coffee, her fingers trembling slightly as she tried to steady her nerves. She wasn’t sure why he made her anxious. Maybe it was the way his intense blue eyes always seemed to be sizing up the world, or maybe it was because he never looked at her, just through her, like she was part of the background.
"Here you go," she said, sliding the cup toward him. In her rush, she misjudged the distance. The cup tipped, and dark coffee splashed across the counter and right onto Theo’s perfectly pressed shirt.
"Oh no!" Emma gasped, her face flushing red. She scrambled to grab napkins, her hands shaking.
Theo took a deep breath, his jaw tightening as he pulled back from the counter. "You’ve got to be kidding me."
"I’m so sorry! Let me—" Emma started blotting his shirt with napkins, but Theo stepped back, holding up his hand to stop her.
"It’s fine," he muttered, though his expression clearly said it wasn’t fine. "Forget it." He grabbed more napkins, wiping himself off as best he could.
Emma bit her lip, mortified. This was not how she wanted her day to go. "I-I’ll make you a new coffee. On the house," she stammered, but Theo shook his head.
"Don’t bother," he said curtly. "I’m late as it is."
Before she could apologize again, Theo turned and walked out of the café, leaving Emma standing there, her heart pounding in her chest.
She watched him leave, the door swinging shut behind him. She let out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding. "Great start to the day, Emma. Really top-notch," she muttered under her breath.
Behind her, Lila, her best friend and coworker, approached with a smirk. "You know, if you wanted to get his attention, spilling hot coffee on him is definitely one way to go about it."
Emma groaned. "Lila, please, don’t."
Lila laughed and handed her a new cup to replace the spilled one. "Hey, at least he noticed you this time."
"Yeah, noticed me ruining his day," Emma grumbled, her face still warm from embarrassment.
"You never know," Lila said teasingly. "Maybe underneath all that grumpiness, he’s charmed."
Emma shook her head, not buying it for a second. Theo Harrison was anything but charmed by her clumsiness. He was the kind of guy who had everything under control, and she was the total opposite. But something about his stormy eyes and brooding presence stuck with her, even after he was gone.
As she cleaned up the mess, she couldn’t help but wonder what it was about Theo that made her so flustered. Whatever it was, she had a sinking feeling that this wouldn’t be their last awkward encounter.
