Belmopan C ompared to laid-back tourist destinations like Punta Gorda, Belize City, and Corozal, the capitol of Belize looked stark and stiff. The city skyline was marked by concrete structures tossed into the picture like layer cakes, and there wasn’t a palm tree in sight as they turned onto Hummingbird Highway headed for the city center. There were plenty of vendors selling fruit and produce lining the road on the outskirts of Belmopan, but buyers and sellers seemed quiet and reserved. There were no noisy kids running up and down the road trying to entice customers. It was almost as if the truck-farmers at the little kiosks were self-conscious about hawking their wares so close to the seat of the Belize government.
